Reborn as God: The strongest system

Chapter 145: Shifting plans

At first glance it looked like a serpent flying through the air, if not for her superior senses she might not even noticed that it was a rope.

It was as black as ash and it came at her like whip, causing the air to twist and churn.

Meeralah was calm despite the alarming speed of the rope. She snapped her fingers and several spells were shot at once. Fire Bolt, Flame sphere, and Burning ray.

However, the rope, which had been aiming for her in a straight line suddenly twisted and dodged her spells one after another. Not only did it act like a living creature, it also possessed the ability to actually evade these spells.

This was not something that was possible in normal circumstances.

"Tsk"

Meeralah clicked her tongue in annoyance, she didn't expect to run into this situation all of a sudden. If she slowed down or lowered her altitude she wouldn't have to fear falling off but if she slowed down she would open herself to be attacked in turn.

Besides she didn't forget about the true enemy. The one who unleashed this black rope on her in the first place.

The problem was that he quickly retreated and hid among the clouds, he didn't even give chase anymore as if the black rope was enough.

Although she did not show her emotions, being underestimated enraged her greatly. She hated being looked down on more than anything in this world.

In an instant, more than a hundred spheres that looked like red clouds manifested around her in a protective formation. The clouds looked harmless but they only looked that way.

As soon as the red clouds appeared the temperature rose several degrees. The might of the spell was revealed as the clouds stretched like cotton candy around the flying pegasus creating a vague form.

Anything that came within a hundred meters of this spell would turn to ash without being able to resist. There was not even a chance to struggle, as heat itself was concentrated and weaponized.

It had the double functionality of offense and defense. Absolute in every aspect.

Meeralah's own personal spell, in the face of this spell she had seen rank 3 creatures die helplessly, beings that were supposedly on the same level as her.

As soon as she burned that black rope to nothingness, she was ready to turn around and burn that bastard to death.

The black rope finally came into the red clouds range!

But…

Something strange happened. Instead of the expected result of the rope burning, it remained unscathed. It didn't even slow down as it passed through her spell ruthlessly.

Meeralah was surprised and flustered as such a thing was happening. It was only now when she understood what was happening.

The rope didn't even dodge her previous spells, just like it wasn't dodging this one. It was phasing through them.

The previous act of dodging and swift evasion was just that—an act. A ruse to make her lower her guard.

"Damn it!"

That was clever. She didn't have the time to do anything else but think. If she had a bit more time she might have figured out a counter to that ability.

The red clouds went berserk as she lost concentration and the pegasus couldn't be protected from the flames anymore.

It literally burned to nothingness in the blink of an eye.

As expected, without being affected by any of her defensive spells the rope caught up to her and bound her hands behind her and twisted around her upper body tightly.

At first it wasn't that long but it elongated enough magically and red runes started glowing along the length of it.

All of that didn't matter as she was now on a free-fall to her death.

As soon as the rope came into contact with her something terrifying happened. All of her mana was dispersed, no matter what she tried her sea of consciousness was blocked off.

Now, she was no different from a normal woman. Her abilities and skills which were developed over a hundred years were no more.

Meeralah had figured that there was some trick behind the rope but she didn't realize that such a ridiculous magic item existed. Or that she would get ambushed like this without any warning.

She did not accept this end. But there was no time to do anything, she was falling from a great height to her death. Even her hidden ace, her supernatural strength didn't work as the rope felt as if it was made of mithril.

'It's not fair…'

In her final moments Meeralah thought that it was simply unfair. It was a stupid thought. Everything vanished from her mind and she just thought of one thing.

She wanted to live!

Suddenly as she thought of that she heard the air split and was caught in the embrace of strong arms. She was not falling anymore but landing steadily.

She was hung on his shoulder and couldn't see his face but she knew he was a man.

***

He had decided to not explain anything and just knock her out and take her away. From then he was going to return to Ard Geath, drop her somewhere in the city and leave the incident as a mysterious event.

No one could suspect him of anything, Esdras had just passed the rite of passage under the eyes of witnesses. In the first place who would have thought that he was capable of something like this?

He was absolutely in the clear.

Esdras thought that he was as careful as he could be when landing but he underestimated how slippery the mountains slopes were in this area and almost slipped.

Although he managed to stabilize himself he ended up dropping Meeralah. That was bad.

But it wasn't nearly as bad as the angle she ended up in, looking right at his face! Judging by her glare she wasn't in a very good mood right now.

Fortunately he had his hood over his head. The sun was setting which obscured his face partially but he still lowered his head and quickly grabbed her. With a hasty motion he quickly moved her hair aside and struck her with a karate chop to the neck.

"Bloody hell! Esdras, you bastard let me go!"

Fuck…

However, contrary to his expectations she didn't faint but instead call him out by name.

"I don't know what you're talking about." Esdras countered nervously.

"oh, I never thought I would live to see this day. Unhand me at once, you traitorous vermin!"

Meeralah confirmed it was he who kidnapped her. In his agitation he spoke for the first time and ended up blowing his cover.

Unfortunately things were going out of control. But if he could just knock her unconscious…

"Don't you dare strike me again!"

As if she sensed his intention Meeralah warned with a deadly voice, her teeth almost shattering against each other.

"Ahaha… I was just trying to release the tension from your shoulders, master."

She wasn't his actual master but this was how lower ranking mages addressed those higher. Especially since she was the backer of the faction.

"So you still know to call me master even after ambushing me and kidnapping me, huh? So, what do you have to say? Because; I am dying to hear an explanation."

Oh, of course she was going to be like this. It's not like Esdras didn't understand her feelings but he too was frustrated to no end. Just to get to this point he sacrificed two awesome items forever.

That's right, the black rope was a consumable that can only be used once.

It's true name was [The guilty binding rope]. It could subdue any being lower than rank 4 for six hours before vanishing.

It was currently his most precious item, a truly useful item that could be used to save his life in important moments. Losing it like this was not easy.

"First of all," Esdras removed his hood revealing his face and turned Meeralah upright, "I hope you understand that I mean you no harm. If I wanted to you would already be dead."

"Haa," Meeralah snorted with a disdainful frown, her eyes looking down at him, "you ambush me and time me up without saying and yet claim to mean no harm? How dumb do think I am?"

Esdras knew it wouldn't be an easy conversation so he wasn't shaken.

"Obviously you're still alive to mock me like this. Isn't that proof enough? It's not like I had any other choice. If I tried talking like you said I would be scattered ashes by now. Am I wrong?"

"Oh yeah? It's not difficult to figure out why you're keeping me alive." Meeralah said with certainty.

"You do?" Even he was stunned, he didn't expect her to catch on that fast. However, if so then he wouldn't have to waste too much time trying to explain.

"Stop already. I saw through your little act a long time ago!"

At this point Esdras had question marks floating above his head, he felt that there might be some misunderstanding.

"You want to ravage me here where nobody can know if anything happened! I have seen this beastial look on many men before. You can't hide it even if you tried. Just kill me now, you bastard!"

Esdras took a step back at such an accusations, he hurriedly waved his hands in denial.

"No, no. What are you even saying?! Don't talk before you think!"

Calming his breathing he regained his composure, "how did you even get to such a conclusion? Listen I know this must be hard on you but calm down for a moment. It's better if I just give you my side of the story first before you jump to anymore ridiculous things."
