Chapter 72: Ch 72: Hero's Arrival- Part 4
Verus sat in silence for a long while, the weight of everything he had heard the day before pressing heavily on his chest.
His mind swirled with questions—about this frozen wasteland, about the so-called Dawn Village, and about Lucian, the boy who claimed to be its leader yet carried himself with the calm authority of someone much older.
He didn't want to believe it, any of it. But every time he replayed Lucian's words, his instincts told him they weren't lies.
That truth was the most terrifying of all.
The creak of the door snapped him out of his spiral.
Before Verus could even turn his head, a man was suddenly in front of him—sitting with one leg crossed over the other, his pale white hair almost glowing under the morning light, his eyes black pools with stark white pupils that seemed to pierce right through him.
Verus's arms were seized in a firm grip before he could react, raised and examined like a doctor inspecting a patient.
"What the hell—?!"
Verus jerked, attempting to pull away. Instinctively, he gathered his mana, prepared to push the intruder off.
Nothing happened.
His heart skipped. His mana refused to answer him.
The stranger tilted his head, studying Verus like one might a curious beast.
Then, without even glancing at him again, he turned his attention to Lucian, who had quietly entered behind him.
"I still prefer you to be the one to break fate, Lucian. This human… fragile. Dragged in against his will. Do you really think he can shoulder it?"
The man said flatly. His voice carried no warmth, only the sharp certainty of someone accustomed to declaring truths.
Verus stiffened. Fragile? Dragged in? Break fate?
His confusion only deepened, but the casual way this man dismissed him cut even sharper.
Lucian exhaled, rubbing his temple as though this was a conversation they had already repeated countless times.
"Belphegor! Wanting the impossible is wasted effort. Focus on what we can do, not on what you wish for."
He said, his tone calm but edged with warning.
Belphegor.
The name rang inside Verus's head like a bell. Even without knowing the details, something deep inside him whispered danger.
The demon—because that's what he must be—pouted, lips quirking into an expression far too playful for the suffocating aura he radiated.
"Tch. Always so reasonable, Lucian. Fine. I'll do things your way. For now."
He released Verus's arms with a careless flick, as though discarding something unworthy of further attention.
Then his eyes gleamed, dangerous once more.
"Since the 'fate breaker' has finally arrived, it won't be long before my brothers sniff around. They'll come—hungry, desperate. I'll set the bait, make a trap, buy us some time. Try not to waste it."
Verus's breath caught.
'Fate breaker? Brothers? Trap?'
He opened his mouth to demand an explanation, but Lucian raised a hand to silence him.
"You should rest for now, Verus. When you're recovered, you can decide what you want to do. If you want to go home, then you'll be allowed to join our guards and search for a way back."
Lucian said simply, his expression unreadable.
Verus blinked, stunned.
It was too generous. Too absurd. He half-expected the boy to burst out laughing and reveal the cruel trick.
But no—the voice carried only sincerity. His instincts hummed in agreement.
He could only stare, torn between suspicion and reluctant gratitude.
Lucian gave him no chance to argue. With a faint sigh, he turned and walked out of the room, his back straight and steady.
Belphegor lingered for a moment longer, his eerie eyes locked on Verus in silent judgment, before he vanished like mist dissipating in the air.
Silence descended. Verus sat there, pulse racing, wondering if he had just been threatened, protected, or both.
'What kind of place is this? And what kind of person is that boy… to have even demons at his side?'
He thought bitterly
The next morning, Verus awoke with his body feeling lighter, the soreness fading away as though the strange warmth of the village itself had seeped into his bones.
He stretched, taking in the cozy room, the faint hum of life outside the window. For the first time since arriving in this nightmare, he almost felt… human again.
That small sense of relief didn't last.
The door opened without warning, and in walked the sharp-eyed woman who had saved him from the monsters.
Her presence instantly drew his guard back up. She moved with a predator's grace, her hand resting casually on the hilt of her blade.
"Get up. It's time for breakfast."
She said bluntly.
Verus frowned, pushing himself to his feet.
"And you are…?"
The woman turned, already halfway out the door, but tossed her answer over her shoulder.
"Luna. Lucian assigned me as your guide around the village. So, you better listen to me."
Her tone dripped with irritation, as though the task was a burden rather than a duty.
Verus clenched his jaw, biting back the retort that rose to his tongue.
'Great. First demons, now babysitters.'
He wanted to snap at her, to demand respect, but… she had saved his life.
And despite her rude demeanor, her hand hadn't left her weapon since stepping inside—she wasn't taking chances with him.
So he swallowed the irritation, forcing himself to follow after her in silence.
Still, in the back of his mind, Verus couldn't shake the unease. Between Lucian's calm promises, Belphegor's threats, and Luna's cold watchfulness, one thing was clear.
This "Dawn Village" was no ordinary place. And neither were the people within it.
After breakfast, Luna wordlessly led Verus through the village streets. He caught glimpses of clustered homes built from stone and wood, faint smoke curling from chimneys, and villagers bundled tightly against the cold as they worked.
The air carried the weight of survival, but also a strange sense of order. Luna finally stopped at a wide clearing ringed with wooden dummies and sparring posts—the training grounds.
Waiting there were Mira, Berry, Lucian, and several others, all gathered as though expecting him.
Verus stiffened, realizing this wasn't a casual tour. Whatever came next, he was clearly being tested.
