Chapter 114: Ch 114: Pest Control- Part 3
Lucius finished his paperwork and stretched, the weight of planning and calculations heavy on his shoulders.
The settlement was stable for now, but he knew better than to grow complacent.
With the pests under control and Mira handling them, there were still countless other aspects of survival demanding his attention.
He decided to walk through the village, inspecting what had changed during the time he had been cooped up in his office.
The first to greet him was Mira. She came running, almost tripping over her own feet in her rush, her cheeks flushed with excitement.
"Lucius! Look!"
She called out, her hands cupped around a small group of the tamed insects. With a sharp whistle, she directed them toward a patch of dirt.
The bugs crawled in a neat formation, scouting the area as if on command. Mira beamed proudly.
"I can even use them to sense vibrations in the soil. If something big starts moving underground, they'll warn us!"
Lucius raised an eyebrow, impressed despite himself. He crouched slightly, ruffling her hair with a rare softness.
"You did well. I knew I could count on you."
Her eyes widened at the praise, and her face went red almost instantly. She tried to hide her smile by puffing out her cheeks, muttering.
"Then… then I'll try even harder."
The insects crawled back into her pouch as if obeying her embarrassment.
Leaving her with her victory, Lucius moved on.
In the clearing nearby, Luna and Verus were sparring again. Luna fought like a storm, every strike carrying a flash of raw intent to kill.
Her blade whistled through the air, aimed at every vulnerable spot she could see.
But Verus met her rage with a calm, steady rhythm. His defense was flawless, his counterattacks precise but never lethal. He took each of her wild lunges as if they were practice drills.
"Stop holding back!"
Luna shouted, frustration plain in her voice.
"This is me holding back. If I took you seriously, you'd already be dead."
Verus replied flatly, blocking another strike and twisting her blade away.
Lucius watched them for a while, not intervening. The tension between those two was strange—volatile, but somehow productive.
He left them to their training, knowing it served both their purposes.
He made his way next to the farmland. Farmers were tending to the fields, the crops slowly recovering from the earlier infestation.
The air smelled fresher, and the soil looked fertile again. The faint traces of mana-infused growth shimmered under the sunlight, a sign of resilience.
Lucius inspected the lines of irrigation, the layering of protective herbs Mira had helped plant, and nodded. They would hold—for now.
Finally, he sought out Jamie and her scout team. He found them returning to base, dust-covered, weapons still sheathed but eyes alert.
Jamie was wiping sweat off her brow when she noticed him. She didn't hesitate to complain.
"There were too many beasts this time. Not just wandering strays. Packs. Organized. And they were all awake. I've never seen them so aggressive. It was like they were waiting for us. Half the time it felt like we were being hunted instead of scouting."
She said immediately, her tone sharp with irritation.
Lucius folded his arms, his expression unreadable.
"And yet you all came back alive."
Jamie gave a short laugh, half relief, half bitterness.
"Barely. It felt terrifying. I don't like saying this, but I don't know how much longer we can handle it if it keeps up like this."
"Things will calm down soon. For now, this surge will pass. It always does. Don't waste your strength worrying about what you can't change."
Lucius said firmly.
She stared at him for a moment, then exhaled through her nose.
"…Fine. I'll trust your judgment." But her eyes still carried the shadow of unease.
Just as she seemed ready to let it go, Jamie remembered something else. Her expression shifted, more curious than concerned.
"Oh, right. On the way back, we found something strange. A new deposit of some kind of mineral in the depths of a reservoir. I've never seen it before—it doesn't match anything we usually collect."
Lucius frowned slightly.
"A mineral deposit?"
"Yeah. Hidden deep in the water. The way it glimmered… it felt different. Strong, even. I thought you'd want to see it yourself."
Before he could respond, the familiar chime of the system echoed in his head. A mission notification flared across his vision:
[New Task: Investigate the mineral buried in the reservoir. Collect and utilize its properties to prepare for the coming summer.]
Lucius read it calmly, but inside, a new thread of unease began to form. Another piece of the puzzle had fallen into place—one more step in the endless game he was forced to play.
"Good work. I'll handle it. Prepare your team. We'll leave soon."
He told Jamie.
Jamie gave a crisp nod, though she muttered under her breath.
"I knew you'd say that."
Lucius turned away, his gaze drifting upward. The clouds above had grown thinner, letting the sun burn just a little hotter than it had the week before.
Summer was indeed coming, and with it, new trials. If this mineral was truly as valuable as the system hinted, then it might be the key to keeping the settlement alive.
He clenched his fist lightly, determination settling over him again. Survival was never about winning once. It was about winning every day that followed.
And for that, he would dig deeper, no matter what awaited in the reservoir.
Lucius lingered a moment longer in thought before heading back to his office.
The settlement bustled with cautious optimism, but he knew that beneath the laughter and daily rhythm, anxiety gnawed at everyone.
They all looked to him for answers—even when he had none.
That pressure was both a burden and a weapon he had to wield carefully. The mineral in the reservoir was more than just another task; it was an opportunity.
If harnessed properly, it might buy them not just survival, but strength.
Lucius narrowed his eyes. This was no longer about enduring. It was about preparing.
