Chapter 108: Ch 108: An Invader- Part 6

ucius paid close attention to the uneven flow of mana radiating from the bomb.

The pulse wasn't stable—it flickered dangerously, like a heartbeat about to rupture. He narrowed his eyes, then glanced at the scientists, who were hovering nearby, terrified.

"Step back. This thing isn't staying here."

He ordered, voice flat but commanding.

"But sir—"

One of them started, but Lucius cut him off with a single glare.

He emptied his inventory, clearing space until the bomb could fit inside.

The device pulsed again, each beat sharper than the last. He sealed it within, already calculating the safest place to dispose of it.

"Keep watching the barriers. Keep everyone safe. I'll deal with this."

He told the scientists.

They nodded quickly, relief and fear written on their faces. Lucius didn't waste another second.

He sprinted toward the far edge of the territory, moving until the settlement was a faint blur behind him. Then he released the bomb into the open field.

The device pulsed violently. Lucius hurled it away with all his strength.

The explosion ripped through the air like a roar from heaven. The shockwave shook the ground, tearing craters into the soil.

Lucius had already thrown up a mana shield, bracing as the flames engulfed him. When the smoke cleared, his shield still shimmered faintly, his stance unbroken.

He let out a quiet exhale.

"First threat—dealt with."

But the system's faint hum reminded him the mission wasn't over.

The familiars still swarmed the settlement, and they wouldn't vanish until their master fell. Merci.

Lucius's gaze sharpened. He felt her mana signature like a thorn in the air, tucked into her little hideout cave, watching, waiting. He adjusted his rifle, already walking toward the ridge.

"Time to smoke you out."

The coward hiding in her cave, directing her little pets to wear down the Dawn settlement. He narrowed his eyes, feeling the tug of her energy signature.

The mana around her was unstable, thinly veiled under the rocks and shadows of the ridge.

He didn't bother approaching quietly. Instead, he raised his rifle, infused the barrel with mana, and fired three precise shots into the cliffside.

The cave shuddered. Cracks spread like lightning across stone until it collapsed in on itself. Dust billowed out as the echo of falling rock filled the valley.

Lucius waited, hand tightening around his gun.

A shrill cry split the battlefield. Merci burst out of the rubble, wings torn and armor cracked. Her face twisted with fury as she realized her cover was gone.

From her vantage point, Jamie spotted her instantly.

She incinerated the last shards of the ice monster with a single flaming strike, the crowd of survivors cheering as the frozen beast shattered.

But Jamie's eyes weren't on the monster anymore. They burned with rage, locked directly on Merci.

"You—You don't get to walk away this time."

Jamie hissed, her flames flaring violently around her fists.

Merci's familiars swarmed protectively, but Jamie's fire reduced the first line into ash.

Merci cursed and tried to retreat, only to stumble backward when a wall of ice suddenly blocked her path. Mira stood there, frost still curling off her hands, her gaze sharp.

"You're not going anywhere," Mira said coldly.

Merci's wings twitched. She turned the other way, but her path was cut off again. This time by Verus, his sword drawn, glowing faintly with suppressed demonic power.

He didn't say anything—his presence alone was a promise that she couldn't escape.

Merci's eyes darted between them, her claws flexing as she realized she had been boxed in.

Jamie, Mira, and Verus advanced together, coordinated like they had trained for this moment all their lives.

Lucius watched from afar, his gun steady, but he didn't intervene. Not yet.

His people needed this—needed to know they could corner and crush a threat like this without leaning on him every second.

He folded his arms, silent, calculating, watching how Merci would move and how his soldiers would respond.

Merci snarled, summoning her shadow familiars in desperation. They poured out in waves, screeching as they lunged toward Mira and Verus.

Verus cut through them with swift arcs of his blade, while Mira conjured spears of ice to impale those that tried to get close.

Jamie, however, ignored them entirely. Her eyes never left Merci.

"You're mine."

Jamie's voice cracked like firewood as she lunged forward, flames exploding around her fists.

Merci blocked with her claws, sparks flying as fire met shadow, but Jamie's assault didn't let up.

Every punch, every strike pushed Merci back further, forcing her to stagger. The crow demoness spat blood and hissed.

"You think you can stop me? I am Silvanus's chosen! You're nothing but mortals clinging to scraps of fire!"

Merci snarled.

Jamie's fist flared with white-hot flame, brighter than anything she had unleashed before. She smiled, cruel and unyielding.

"Then burn with your master's pride."

Her strike connected, searing across Merci's chest. The crow demon screamed, wings flailing as the fire engulfed her.

Mira and Verus didn't hesitate—they pressed in at the same time, Mira freezing her legs to the ground, Verus slicing across her wings to ground her completely.

Merci writhed, her familiars shrieking in tandem as their bond shattered under the assault. One by one, they dissolved into shadows, their forms breaking apart like smoke.

Lucius finally lifted his gun and spoke, voice calm and absolute.

"End it."

Jamie didn't wait. She thrust her burning hand straight into Merci's chest.

The flames surged, devouring her from the inside out. Merci's scream pierced the battlefield, then cut short as her body turned to ash, scattering in the wind.

Silence followed. The last of the familiars faded away, leaving only the panting of exhausted fighters and the crackle of dying flames.

Jamie pulled her hand back, chest heaving.

Mira leaned against an ice shard, sweat dripping from her forehead, while Verus lowered his blade, gaze still fixed on the spot where Merci had stood.

The people of Dawn settlement slowly realized—it was over. The familiars were gone. The bomb had been stopped.

Merci was dead. Relief swept across the battlefield, mingling with cries of victory.

Lucius lowered his rifle and finally approached, his expression unreadable. His people looked at him expectantly, waiting for him to praise them. Instead, he gave a curt nod.

"You did what needed to be done. Good. Now get back to work—there's still aftermath to deal with."

Jamie cracked a tired grin.

"That's all we get? A 'good'?"

Lucius looked at her, his gaze steady.

"If you want a pat on the back, you'll get it when this settlement stops bleeding from every wound. Until then, move."

Jamie sighed but obeyed, Mira muttered something under her breath, and Verus simply sheathed his blade.

As the group dispersed to tend to survivors and secure the battlefield, Lucius turned his eyes to the horizon. His system chimed faintly with another mission complete, yet he felt no relief.

This wasn't the end. Merci's death was only the beginning. If Silvanus had sent one lackey, others would follow.

And with Verus's presence growing harder to hide, the demon kings would not stay quiet for long.

Lucius exhaled softly, a rare flicker of weariness crossing his face before it hardened again.

"Come then, let's see who dares challenge me next."

He murmured to the empty air.
