Chapter 102: Family Time [2]
"So you see, Matt, when Jin-sung was a kid, he used to cry a lot and come to me." The loud voice of Kai's uncle, Kim Ha-joon, echoed through the room as he patted Matt on the back continuously.
"Eomobu, can you stop?"
Ha-joon turned to Kai, then after a hiccup, he said, "Why? Are you embarrassed?" He laughed loudly again.
Kai smiled slightly, then leaned his head on his palm.
His gaze swept from his father and aunt, who were passed out from too much alcohol, to Hari, who was cleaning the kitchen with his mom, then to his uncle, who was speaking with Matt.
Ha-joon stared at Kai for a bit, then asked, "Is it only me, or does our little cupcake seem more matured?"
Kai's mother, Cha Ji-ae, glanced from him to Hari, pondering. "You're right, both he and Ha-rin seem oddly matured..." She gasped. "Did you guys...?"
Before she could finish, both Kai and Hari shot out, "We did not."
Cha Ji-ae frowned. "What a pity... Why can't you guys make things spicy?"
Kai stared at his mother, who was looking straight at him with a narrowed gaze. "Crazy."
His mother's face twisted. "Say that again, you brat."
Kai grinned. "Oh, I thought you said you would never curse, Mom?"
His mother shrieked back, then turned her face away from him. "I never cursed."
Seeing his family like this, Kai could feel his heart get warm by the minute. Oddly enough, he didn't feel any discomfort from not having any information or an upper hand.
His mom was in the kitchen that faced the living area, his dad and aunt were passed out on the gyojasang table, both he, his uncle, and Matt also sat around it, but at least they were awake.
While his sister...
"Jin-sung, Ha-rin, come let me wash your backs."
Kai stared at the bathroom door at the end of the hallway before trying to stand. Hari too was beginning to move from where she stood.
Matt, who sat close to Kai, frowned a bit. "Kai... I mean Jin-sung, do you bathe with Hari and your sister?"
Kai's gaze turned slowly to Matt, so did Hari's. 'Damn, I forgot Matt was here.' He turned to the bathroom door once more. 'But even if this is a dream, my body has already gotten used to going to take a bath when Nonna calls.'
At the moment, Kai was caught between answering his older sister, Ji Eun, or getting the ultimate shame by going to bathe with two females when Matt was around.
He turned to his mom, who winked at him, then to his uncle, who grinned.
Kai's head began to spin. This was by far the greatest problem he had encountered in a while, worse than even Deerheart's case. As his gaze darted around the room, he caught a glimpse of his father, who raised his head.
And by using their famous father and son telepathic message, he immediately told his father, Cha Jinwoo, about everything that was happening.
His father, with drunk eyes, raised his thumb, then fell flat on his face.
And just at the worst time, his sister called again. "Jin-sung, Ha-rin, I'm waiting."
Matt's eyes were wide, as a grin spread across his face. He then repeated the words again. "Jin-sung, she's waiting."
Kai and Matt's gaze caught in a deadlock before Kai clicked his tongue. 'Bastard.'
As Kai was almost standing to his feet, his aunt, Kim Ha-eun, stood abruptly, then stared at him. With her fingers, she gestured him to come closer.
Her purple hair, that looked just like his mom's, swaying ever so slightly. "Little cupcake!" she yelled out, then a hiccup escaped.
Kai couldn't help but feel how utterly similar she looked to his mom, her light purple eyes and her royal purple hair, almost the same build, with the only difference being that his mom had dimples, which he inherited, while Hari's mom didn't have any and instead had a birthmark underneath her eyes.
As she staggered a few steps back, Kai gripped her by the waist. "You might fall."
She smiled, then laughed loudly. "Look at our cupcake becoming so manly. You look like your father now... or do you look more like me? I don't know," she said, dropping her hands that she used to cup his cheeks.
She then raised her finger again as if to say something, then stopped. "Take me to my room... No, no, let's dance." She paused, then dragged his hand. "You too, Ha-rin, or do you still prefer being called Hari?"
Before Kai could react, she dragged him by the hand and forced him to dance with her.
Cha Ji Eun came out of the bathroom wearing a nightgown. "Aren't you..." As her gaze locked on Kai and Hari, who were dancing with Ha-eun, she smiled. "Don't go too hard on them."
At that very moment, Kai didn't know what hit him, but a flood of memories came crashing into his head.
Memories of his past life that had been locked away somewhere deep inside his mind.
The Cha and Kim family, also known as the strangest family on the block.
The head of the Cha family had silver hair, while the son-in-law of the Kim family had sky blue hair, each of their eyes matching the colour of their hair.
The wives of the house were both twins who were inseparable from birth. To people, they were the perfect set of siblings, royal purple hair and light purple eyes, with a face that was out of this world. By Earth's standards, they were considered almost ethereal.
Modeling, film industries, idol groups — there was no one who didn't want them, and the men they married were by no means inferior.
One was a gym instructor, while the other, Kai's father, was a famous anime voice actor who quit his job for family.
The two couples, since people knew them, lived together under one roof. Even when his aunt Ha-eun was only dating the famous gym instructor, Lee Ha-joon, they all lived together.
First came the Cha family's daughter, who had her mother's face and body paired with her father's hair and eye colour, silver.
After about four years, both the Cha and the Kim family, which had taken in Ha-joon, got ready to conceive their children.
The first to be born was Cha Jin-sung, the one who was called the beauty who could slay gods.
Just like the flower his mother liked, he had pale lilac hair with silver undertones, and pale lilac eyes. He was the pride of his mother, someone that was meant to be both precious and successful.
After a few months, the Kim family gave birth to Ha-rin. Because of her unusual hair and eye colour that was neither white nor sky-blue, a colour that was like the clear ocean.
Kai felt tears roll down his cheeks as the voice of his cheeky younger self rang in his head.
A conversation he had long forgotten. It was back when he and Hari were bullied in their school because of their unusual hair colour, which wasn't even dyed.
People called them witch and monster, and Hari especially was taunted more. Since unlike Kai, who was liked by most girls, Hari was envied by girls for being pretty.
They used to say that she was a monster from the ocean, that was why she had blue hair and her name meant clear water in the summer (Ha-rin).
Kai had tried to stop it, but when he saw it wasn't stopping, he decided to pick on one of the schoolboys so he too would get bullied, since he obviously didn't have the strength.
Then he had made a promise to her to get stronger and protect everything he loved, including her, and told her that from that day she wasn't Ha-rin to him, but Hari, the one who erases all.
Maybe that was what brought up Hari's psychopathic phase, he didn't quite know, neither did he know why this memory that was locked away deep in his mind was revealing itself. Was it a sign of some sort?
But something that was even more confusing was how he shared the same face with Kaiser Vanguard.
Was there really a force who chose him personally to go to the world of his novel?
And why couldn't he remember that to atone for not saving that kid from bullying that day, even though he had said he would stop all bullies, he put the scene in his novel with a character that looked like himself?
Kai didn't know the answer. More and more questions popped in his head.
But weirdly enough, he didn't feel paranoid. He smiled at his aunt as his eyes, that had been feeling like they had been blurred since he entered Meltonia, began to clear slowly.
Bright colours and lighting he had not seen in so long filled the air, as his family, including his father, who was now awake, began to laugh at he, Hari, and his aunt.
The bright lighting from the bulb made the room warm. His heart felt warm and was beating incredibly fast.
He could hear all the sounds around him clearly.
Kai... No, Cha Jin-sung closed his eyes for a brief moment as his aunt called out, "Jin-sung, are you okay?"
Kai took a deep breath and grinned. "I'm going to do something crazy."
She tilted her head, but before she could speak, Kai raised her up and yelled, "I feel free."
Ha-joon then yelled, a beer in his hand, "That's the spirit, kiddo, show them what my gym training can do."
His father, who had been quiet, chimed in. "Yeah, that's my boy, you have to break her back properly." He laughed at the top of his lungs. "This is the dark side."
'I... I feel so alive.'
