Rebirth of the Villain

Chapter 86: t

[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION: VOID STABILIZATION: 90% COMPLETE]

[FINAL CONVERGENCE REQUIRED]

"Now," Arthur growled, his thrusts becoming harder, more primal. "Come for me, Beatrice. Now."

She shattered instantly, her climax ripping through her with such force that divine light exploded outward in a visible shockwave.

Arthur followed immediately, his release triggering a corresponding surge of void energy that met the divine burst in perfect balance. For a brief moment, reality itself seemed to thin around them, offering a glimpse of something beyond—endless darkness punctuated by distant stars, and at its center, a structure that could only be the dungeon's true form.

They remained joined for several heartbeats, both breathing heavily as their energies settled. The water around them gradually returned to its normal appearance, though it seemed to cling to their skin more than natural water should when they finally separated.

"That was..." Beatrice began, then laughed softly, unable to find adequate words.

"Effective," Arthur supplied with a smile, helping her back into the pool to rinse off. "And informative. The water definitely amplifies energy exchange."

"And sensation," Beatrice added, her cheeks still flushed. "I've never felt anything so intense."

They dressed quickly, aware that Valentina and Lily would be returning soon. As Arthur fastened his sword belt, he noticed something had changed in the clearing—the cave entrance behind the waterfall was now clearly visible, no longer hidden in shadow. More significantly, symbols glowed faintly around its arch—the same symbols Beatrice had drawn after their ritual vision of the dungeon's interior.

"It's opened for us," Beatrice whispered, awe in her voice. "The energy exchange triggered something."

Valentina and Lily returned just as they were examining the newly revealed entrance. If either woman suspected what had transpired in their absence, they kept their observations to themselves.

"The perimeter is secure," Valentina reported. "No sign of Cassius or any other visitors." She nodded toward the glowing cave entrance. "I see you've made progress."

"The dungeon responds to void and divine energy in balance," Arthur explained, omitting the specific method of achieving that balance. "It's ready for us now."

They gathered their essential supplies, leaving the horses secured with enough food and water for several days. Arthur led the way toward the cave, the void within him humming in anticipation as they approached the threshold between worlds.

"Remember," he cautioned as they reached the entrance, "we don't know what awaits us inside. Stay together, follow my lead, and trust nothing the dungeon shows you without verification."

The women nodded, their expressions resolute despite the obvious danger. Arthur took a deep breath, centering himself as he had been taught in his former life on Earth. Then, with void-touched confidence, he stepped through the glowing archway into darkness.

The transition was immediate and disorienting. One moment they stood in a natural cave behind a waterfall; the next, they were in a vast chamber that couldn't possibly fit within the mountain. The ceiling soared hundreds of feet above them, supported by columns of black stone veined with pulsing silver light. The floor beneath their feet was polished to a mirror shine, reflecting their images with perfect clarity—except Arthur's reflection showed his void evolution at 100%, a fully transformed being of shadow and power.

"Stay close," Arthur ordered, his voice echoing strangely in the impossible space. "The dungeon is already trying to influence us."

Beatrice activated her divine shield, a subtle golden glow surrounding their group. "The protective enchantments are holding, but I don't know for how long. This place... it's like nothing I've ever encountered."

Valentina's sharp eyes scanned their surroundings, her hand resting on her dagger. "There are doorways on all sides. Which way?"

Arthur studied the chamber, noting that each doorway was marked with different symbols. Some he recognized from Beatrice's drawings, others were completely unfamiliar. But one doorway in particular called to him—a simple arch on the far side of the chamber, marked with the void evolution symbol he'd seen in his System notifications.

"There," he said, pointing. "That's our path."

As they crossed the vast chamber, Arthur noticed something unsettling—their footsteps made no sound on the polished floor, yet he could hear breathing that didn't come from any member of their party. The dungeon itself seemed alive, observing them with patient curiosity.

They were halfway to their chosen doorway when the air before them shimmered, coalescing into a humanoid figure that stopped them in their tracks. Not solid, but visible—a silhouette of living darkness with eyes like burning voids.

"Welcome, Arthur Lionheart," the figure said, its voice echoing from everywhere and nowhere. "I've been waiting for you."

Arthur's hand went to his sword, void energy gathering around the blade. "Marcus Chen's student, I presume?"

The shadow figure inclined its head in acknowledgment. "Once, perhaps. Now I am simply the Watcher. The dungeon's guardian and guide."

"We don't need a guide," Arthur replied coldly. "Step aside."

"So confident," the Watcher observed with amusement. "So certain of your path. But the dungeon has many levels, many trials. Without guidance, you may wander for eternity."

Beatrice stepped forward, divine light flaring around her hands. "We won't trust a creature of void corruption."

The Watcher laughed—the same cold, patient sound Arthur had heard after Lyralei's warning. "Corruption? Is that what you call evolution? How... limited." Its burning gaze returned to Arthur. "You understand better, don't you? The void doesn't corrupt—it transforms. It reveals what was always there, beneath the masks we wear."

Before Arthur could respond, the chamber trembled. A new presence filled the space—divine light pouring through the entrance they had used, so bright it was almost painful to behold.

"Demon!" a familiar voice called. "Step away from them!"

Arthur turned to see Cassius striding into the chamber, his golden armor gleaming with divine power, the blessed sword Demonbane drawn and radiating purifying light. Behind him came Nara, her silver-white hair bound in a warrior's braid, her expression conflicted as her eyes met Arthur's across the chamber.

The Watcher's form flickered with what might have been amusement. "And so the players assemble. Divine light. Void shadow. Beast instinct. The dungeon welcomes all who seek its trials."

With those cryptic words, the shadow figure dissolved into mist that spread throughout the chamber. The polished floor beneath them suddenly became transparent, revealing a labyrinth of corridors and chambers extending impossibly far below.

"The Incubus King corrupts all he touches," Cassius declared, advancing with his sword raised. "Step away from him, ladies. I will cleanse this evil."

Arthur's void energy responded to the threat, shadows gathering around him like living armor. "You're out of your depth, Cassius. This place isn't meant for you."

"On the contrary," Cassius replied, divine light flaring around his blade. "I was guided here by the Church of Light itself. The divine will demands your purification."

Nara stepped forward, placing a restraining hand on Cassius's arm. "This isn't the place for battle," she said, her voice carrying the subtle growl of her beast nature. "The dungeon is dangerous to all of us."

For a moment, it seemed Cassius might ignore her warning. Divine energy pulsed around him, responding to his righteous anger. But then the floor beneath them shuddered again, and a new voice filled the chamber—childlike yet ancient.

"She's right, you know."

Gizmo appeared between the two groups, his childlike form somehow more substantial than the Watcher had been. He smiled, ancient eyes gleaming with amusement.

"This dungeon wasn't created for combat between transmigrators," he explained, gesturing around the vast chamber. "It's a test—for all of you."

"A test of what?" Valentina asked, her hand still on her dagger.

"Evolution," Gizmo replied simply. "The ability to adapt, to change, to become more than what you were." His gaze shifted between Arthur and Cassius. "Some evolve through shadow, others through light. But evolution itself is neither good nor evil—it simply is."

"Lies," Cassius spat. "The void corrupts. It consumes. It destroys."

"As can divine light, when wielded without wisdom," Gizmo countered. "How many have you killed in the name of purification, Cassius? How many lives extinguished because they didn't fit your definition of purity?"

Cassius had no answer, though his grip on Demonbane tightened.

"The dungeon will test each of you according to your nature," Gizmo continued. "Pass its trials, and you'll gain understanding beyond your current limitations. Fail, and..." He shrugged his childlike shoulders. "Well, failure has its own lessons."

"And if we refuse to participate in your game?" Arthur asked, shadows still swirling around him.

Gizmo smiled, the expression somehow both innocent and ancient. "You already are participating, Arthur Lionheart. You have been since the moment you accepted your System."

With that cryptic statement, Gizmo clapped his hands once. The sound echoed impossibly in the vast chamber, and the floor beneath them suddenly vanished. Arthur felt himself falling, the void within him surging in response to the sudden danger. Beside him, Beatrice cried out, divine light flaring around her in a futile attempt to slow their descent.

The last thing Arthur saw before darkness claimed him was Nara's face, her amber eyes meeting his across the widening gap between them, her hand reaching toward him even as she fell in a different direction.

Then there was only darkness, and the sensation of falling endlessly into the heart of the dungeon.
