Chapter 1: Chapter 1 Rebirth of the Forgotten Soul
Chapter 1: Rebirth of the Forgotten Soul
Kael Veylan's existence had been reduced to fragments. His last memory was a vivid inferno of betrayal—magic sealing his limbs, chains of celestial energy binding his soul, and his own apprentices standing over him with smug grins. They had wanted his knowledge, his power, and his legacy. And they'd succeeded.
The pain of his shattered soul was supposed to be eternal. But then... nothing.
Kael awoke gasping for air. His body screamed in protest as he bolted upright, his head spinning. Gone were the vibrant skies of his once-great domain, replaced by an oppressive gray. The air smelled of soot, sweat, and decay. He was in a filthy alley, the jagged cobblestones biting into his palms.
"What—where am I?" he rasped, his voice hoarse and unfamiliar.
His hands trembled as he reached for his chest, expecting the sturdy frame of his once-powerful body. Instead, he found skin stretched thin over sharp bones—a body weakened by hunger and neglect. His heart raced as he looked down at himself. His robes, once woven from threads of pure mana, were now tattered rags that barely covered his gaunt form.
Before he could process further, a voice echoed in his mind.
"System initialization complete. Welcome, Host."
Kael froze. The voice was calm, almost cheerful, and distinctly artificial.
"System?" he murmured.
"Correct," the voice confirmed. "Soul synchronization: 47%. Memory fragments: scattered. Host is currently classified as a 'Beginner' in the System framework."
Kael's brows furrowed. System framework? Synchronization? None of these terms made sense, but he couldn't deny the strange sensation in his chest. Something foreign had attached itself to his very being, threading through the remnants of his shattered soul.
"Explain," he demanded, his voice regaining some of its authority.
The System responded promptly. "You have been selected as a System Host. As such, you will embark on quests, gain experience, and acquire skills to grow stronger. However, due to your fragmented soul, certain restrictions apply. Initial diagnostics indicate missing memories and reduced spiritual integrity."
Kael's jaw tightened. The mention of his fragmented soul stung. He had spent centuries as the Archmage of Dominion, a title that shook empires. Now, he was a shadow of that man, his power reduced to a flicker.
"What do you mean by quests?" he asked cautiously.
"Your first quest has already been assigned."
---
Quest Notification: Survive the Next 24 Hours
Objective: Avoid death.
Reward: Access to the Beginner's Menu.
Failure Penalty: Permanent death.
---
Kael scowled. "Avoid death? That's hardly a challenge."
As if on cue, the sound of angry shouting reached his ears. Kael turned his head to see a group of three burly men entering the alley, their eyes narrowing when they spotted him.
"Oi, look what we've got here," one of them sneered. "A little rat hiding in our turf."
Kael's instincts screamed danger. His body was weak, his magic nonexistent, and his soul far from whole. These men were armed with crude weapons—clubs and daggers—but even in his prime, he knew better than to underestimate desperation.
"System," he muttered under his breath, "what are my options?"
"Activating Beginner's Assistance. Scanning Host's environment for usable resources..."
A soft ding echoed in his mind.
---
Environment Scan Results
Broken crate (20% structural integrity): Potential weapon (blunt).
Loose cobblestone: Throwable object.
Trash heap: Concealable hiding spot.
---
"Pathetic," Kael muttered. But he had no time to argue. The thugs were closing in, and his body wouldn't withstand a direct fight.
The leader stepped forward, brandishing a rusty dagger. "Give us everything you've got, and we might let you crawl away."
Kael smirked, his pride flickering to life. "You'll regret those words."
He lunged for the broken crate. His muscles screamed in protest, but he ignored the pain. He ripped a jagged plank free just as the first thug reached him. With a feral shout, Kael swung the makeshift weapon, catching the man across the jaw. The thug stumbled, blood spraying as he crumpled to the ground.
The second thug cursed and rushed forward, swinging his club wildly. Kael ducked low, grabbing the loose cobblestone. With all the strength he could muster, he hurled it at his attacker's face. The stone struck true, and the man dropped his weapon, clutching his broken nose.
The third thug hesitated, his confidence shaken. Kael stood tall—or as tall as his frail body allowed—and fixed him with a piercing glare.
"Leave now," Kael growled, his voice carrying the weight of his past power. "Or I'll ensure you don't leave at all."
The thug hesitated for a moment before turning tail and running. His injured companions crawled after him, cursing and groaning.
Kael stood still for a moment, watching them disappear down the alley. His heart raced, but he couldn't deny the satisfaction building in his chest. Despite his weakened body, the fire of survival still burned inside him. This was only the beginning.

Quest Complete: Survive the Next 24 Hours (Partial)
Bonus: Gained Beginner Skill: Intimidation (Level 1).
---
Kael leaned against the alley wall, his chest heaving. The fight had left him drained, but he couldn't suppress the flicker of satisfaction. He was weak, but he wasn't helpless. He was still Kael Veylan—just buried under layers of time and weakness.
The System had given him a taste of what lay ahead. But it wasn't enough. He needed more. He needed power.
"System," he said, his voice tinged with determination. "This world has underestimated me. Let's change that."
The voice responded almost immediately. "Understood, Host. Unlocking Beginner's Menu."
A new window flashed in Kael's vision. He blinked, trying to adjust to the strange holographic interface. The menu was simple, but the options were clear.
---

Kael's eyes lingered on his Mana bar. Zero. A pang of frustration hit him. Mana had once been his lifeblood—his connection to the arcane forces of the universe. Without it, he was little more than a mortal.
"System, how do I regain my mana?" he demanded.
"Mana is restored through quests, combat, and certain environmental factors. It will take time to regain your former capabilities," the voice replied.
Kael's eyes narrowed. Time was one thing he didn't have. But this System, whatever it was, was a tool—one he intended to use. He had already started down this new path, and he would reclaim what was lost. He would become the Overlord again, no matter what it took.
