Rebirth: I Will Kill A God

Chapter 4: A Strange Encounter

I continued in the direction that I saw one of the foxes run in.

There was still a while left before the end of the Holy Trials, so I had time. But I still had to think about how exactly I'd kill a shade fox with just the hands of a ten-year-old.

Maybe I can hold the divine weapon in my hand to gain its physical buffs and then punch it with my other hand.

I continue in the direction that leads to a small mountain range. Shadows peak.

From my past life, I knew that the mountain range could be dangerous, harbouring demons of even B rank, so I needed to make sure I didn't get too close.

Maybe I could beat a B-ranked demon with this weapon.

Normally to defeat any demons C rank and upwards, you would need to become awakened.

This was a process that was taken after passing the holy trials, and it put you on a path towards learning your first ability.

But with this weapon...

I decided that if I came across the fox, I would slay it and make my way back to the holy realm with its corpse.

However, if I failed to find it, I would continue further to Shadows Peak, and try to hunt stronger prey.

---

I continued traversing through Limbo. The sky above was unchanging as always. But the terrain differed, as I passed through patches of trees, over small hills and valleys, and past smaller lakes.

But no matter how close I got to the mountain range, the shade fox could not be seen.

I heard cries of battle, though they were in the distance behind me. Nobody would come near Shadows Peak, or at least not this close

I made my way past a tree with pink wood and red leaves, and as I did, I finally found the fox.

But it was dead.

My first thought was, who could have killed it? Demons rarely attacked each other, so it didn't make sense.

Could one of the other Halo's have made it here before me?

No.

As I looked closer at the corpse of the shade fox, I noticed something strange.

There was a twig sticking out of the wound from its gut.

And attached to the top of that stick using a piece of rope was another stick. But it was horizontal and seemed to be pointing somewhere.

Towards shadows peak?

For the first time during this life, I had come across an event that I was completely unfamiliar with.

I couldn't figure out a reason why someone would do such a thing.

And why would they make the sticks point towards Shadows Peak?

I tried to fight against it, but my curiosity had peaked.

I knew it was dangerous, but I so desperately wanted to know who would do something so twisted.

Coming to a decision, I decided to make my way to Shadows mountain range. I would not climb it, as I didn't have the time, but I would at least check it out.

The fox's body would stay there, as it seemed to have been killed by a weaker weapon.

If I found nothing near the mountains, I would return and take the corpse back to Zoryndrel.

It's not cheating. Even if I didn't kill this one, I have already killed four!

I continued in that direction, heading towards the base of the closest mountain to me.

However, after only a few steps, I saw something stranger than the first dead fox.

It was second dead fox.

And it had been killed in the same manner. A large wound to its stomach, with two twigs attached and sticking out from it.

Once again, they pointed towards the mountain range.

Now things were truly becoming strange.

If it were only one, then perhaps you could somehow chalk it up to coincidence.

However, a second identical body made it certain.

Something, or someone, was trying to draw people to the mountain range.

So much so that it killed its own people and interrupted the Holy Trials.

I slowly drew my blade from its sheath. There was a chance that this was the doings of a demon even stronger than the B Rank, but the chances were low.

You usually only found those closer to the edges of Limbo.

Still, I would need to be prepared for the worst-case scenario.

Despite the fear, I felt excitement at the prospect of getting to fight something dangerous.

And the loot would be good too.

---

After continuing through the forest leading to Shadows Peak mountain range, I came across three more corpses of foxes, all killed in the same manner.

Every time I came across a new one, I hesitated my decision and had second thoughts.

But I needed to do this. The stronger demons you killed during your time as a regular, meant that you would receive a stronger first ability once awakening.

And if I wanted to do anything to avenge myself, then I needed to make sure that I was gathering as much strength as I possibly could.

Finally, I emerged from the trees and stood at the base of the mountains.

They were incredible in height, casting a great shadow over me. And they were not even the tallest mountains in Limbo, there was still Heavens Hills.

But I would not be going there any time soon.

I made sure that the divine dagger was tightly gripped in my hand and made my way closer to the mountain.

I told myself I would not try to climb it, but I had to get closer to try and figure out what was going on.

Snap.

I heard a twig snap from behind me and turned with speed, my dagger held up in a defensive position.

From the forest? But I just came from there.

A figure slowly emerged from the shadows of the forest and stepped into the open spaces.

I was shocked at what I saw.

It was a young girl, only a few years older than myself. Her hair was brilliantly white, and she wore black robes with a gold symbol on the chest.

Robes that I were familiar with. She was a member of the Luciferen, the strongest of the demon clans.

My heart almost stopped in my chest. Even with the divine blade and my past memories, this girl would most likely tear me to shreds.

From my previous life, I knew exactly how strong the Luciferen were first hand. Every girl and boy were forced through gruesome training since birth, putting them many levels about the Halo's.

I turned, contemplating running towards the mountain, but the girl held up a hand for me to stop.

Her eyes were bloody red, and her face was innocent.

"Are you the one that was reborn?" She asked me, her high-pitched voice carrying through the air.

At first, I thought I heard wrong, but the girl continued to speak.

"Judging from the divine weapon in your hand, and the fact that you were able to stop our shade foxes alone tells me that my guess is probably right."

Sweat began to drip from my head, and it required all of my effort to stop my nerves from taking over me.

How does she know...

She flashed me a smile, as though she was able to hear the thoughts in my head.

It was perfectly possible, some people had that ability.

"You don't need to be so startled, I'm not here as your enemy." She spoke calmly, hands inside the pockets of her robes as she walked towards me.

Instinctively I backed away, constantly on guard.

"What do you mean?" I asked her, fear evident in my voice.

"I mean what I said. I am not here as your enemy. Vladir just wishes to meet you, and discuss your rebirth."
