Chapter 102: Escape
"As I believed, my Lord. A student was found dead in his room," reported the spy Lucen had recently planted in the academy.
Lucen already suspected that Hades knew who the culprit was, yet the redhead refused to speak.
It wasn't hard for Lucen to understand why. The dead man, Taylor, had been scheming against Hades for a long time.
The Silverthorn family was already in ruins, and Lucen felt that the last surviving heir of that house surely had a hand in this.
No evidence surfaced even after a thorough inspection, but Lucen trusted his instincts.
In his eyes, Taylor was guilty.
So if Hades had taken matters into his own hands, the King did not feel troubled.
In truth, he was almost relieved.
Still, a king could not openly condone such an act. Rewarding a man for killing another without proper judgment would shake the very foundation of his rule.
The wisest course was simple.
"Make it appear as if he went hunting alone and was slain by a beast."
The spy bowed low. "As you command, my Lord."
When he left, a soft voice came from behind the curtains.
"For the first time since we wed, I find myself angry at your composure."
Lucen exhaled heavily, rose from his seat, and walked to his wife.
"Dear... we have already spoken of this."
He slipped his arms around her waist, but Tia refused to meet his gaze.
The moment she had learned her son's killer was not only spared but kept as a guest in the palace, her heart shattered.
Forgiving Hades was one thing. But to see her husband treat him with respect—why must she endure that?
"Do you truly not miss our son, my Lord?" she asked, turning at last, her eyes shimmering with tears.
Lucen slowly raised his hands before her face.
"These very hands held Cedric the moment he was born. I had tears in my eyes when he called me Pa for the first time. He was my joy, Tia. All of our children are my joy."
Her lips trembled as she bit them. "But couldn't he have been punished in some way? I could have lived knowing my son's murderer rotted in a cell for the rest of his life. But now…. how am I supposed to tell myself that everything is fine?"
Lucen heaved a sigh and just silently embraced his wife.
He hadn't told her everything that Cedric had done in the past few months.
In her eyes, her Cedric was still that innocent, slightly short-tempered but her adorable son.
And he was going to let things be as they are.
....
Hades and Luna returned to the capital, though instead of heading straight for the palace, they chose to fulfill the true purpose of their visit.
To enjoy the festival.
Naturally, their faces and hair were hidden beneath light shrouds, blending them into the crowd.
"Mm! This is so yum!" Luna exclaimed, her fingers wrapped delicately around the warm apple candy she had just bought from a nearby stall.
Hades took a bite of his own and gave a thoughtful nod. "Normally, I don't care much for sweets… but this isn't bad at all." The crisp tartness of the apple, combined with the caramelized sugar, created a perfect harmony that even he couldn't deny.
The two strolled through the sea of festival-goers, keeping close as they weaved between laughter, music, and dazzling lanterns.
"There are so many people here," Luna murmured, her hand tightening slightly around his as they walked at a gentler pace.
Hades turned to her, voice steady. "Are you tired?"
She shook her head lightly. "Not really… but I could use a little peace."
Though she wasn't overwhelmed, the constant press of strangers and the noise of celebration were things she wasn't accustomed to. Still, the day had etched itself into her heart already, a memory she knew she would treasure for the rest of her life.
Hades gave a brief nod and squeezed her hand. "Then let's go somewhere peaceful." Without waiting for her reply, he guided her out of the bustling streets and into the quiet forest encircling the capital.
Luna followed in silence, curiosity flickering in her eyes. His steps were firm and deliberate, as though he was retracing a path he had walked countless times.
"Ah… yes. Here it is," Hades said at last, his voice carrying a rare note of familiarity.
Before them stretched a small clearing, where a clear stream traced its way past clusters of rocks rising from the earth.
"I used to come here often," he explained quietly. "This was my escape… a place where the world couldn't follow."
It wasn't far from the capital—close enough to return quickly, yet secluded enough to be forgotten. Whenever the weight of missions or loneliness pressed down on him, this hidden spot had become his refuge. But ever since joining the Academy, his visits had dwindled. Seeing it unchanged now stirred something unspoken in him.
"Hunting, camping, or simply doing nothing… this place always offered peace." With that, he helped Luna climb onto a flat rock overlooking the stream before settling beside her.
Her eyes sparkled with playful curiosity. "Am I the first person you've brought here?" she asked, a faintly teasing smile curving her lips.
To her surprise, he didn't hesitate. He nodded.
"Yes. You're the first one to see this special spot."
Luna blinked, caught off guard, before a soft warmth bloomed across her expression. "Oh…" Her gaze drifted to the water, where sunlight danced upon the ripples. "…This place is beautiful. Thank you for sharing it with me."
Hades smiled at her, "Want to stay here tonight?"
No one was going to search for them tonight, that's for sure and Hades really didn't feel like going back to the palace.
He would rather stay somewhere he was fond of…maybe for the last time.
Luna slowly got up, "Well, I was eager for a bath. But since we are staying here," as she stepped down the rock, she slowly began to remove her clothes, starting from the shawl.
Layer by layer, she removed her clothes, ensuring she was being seen by her man.
Hades's breath grew heavy, his body hot as she slowly slid the strap of her dress, and revealed her bare body before him.
Slowly, seductively, she advanced towards the stream and just before touching the water, she looked at him over the shoulder.
Hades didn't need her words to move.
Soon, he also removed his clothes and joined her.
