208. A Valiant Stand
+++ Lieutenant Hans Hoffman +++
Defeat?
Victory?
Stalemate?
It didn't matter to Hans' mind. Right now, all that mattered was to keep these bastards off Fort Patricia.
Most of all, he wanted to see and learn what these calamities offered. They were the last guards of Hubris, so they must be the most powerful of the bunch.
And he knew that immediately when he dived into battle, and two burning dragons rushed toward him.
His double coaxials sent a torrent of heavy gunfire to scatter the incoming monsters, but one of them managed to dodge his gunfire and strike his mech.
Flames flared out everywhere, the inferno causing multiple warning signs on his mech's damage control screens. Even with his [SMOOTH RESPONSE III] shields activated, it seemed like it wasn't enough.
Interesting.
His mech dived out of trouble, as the two dragons reformed in the sky. He was now on the fields north of Fort Patricia, giving him enough room to maneuver.
And he pulled back as the fire dragons screeched in his direction.
With an MPAT round up and ready, he opened fire at one of the incoming magical beasts, before following up with his plasma rounds.
It seemed to be doing the trick.
But, that's not that woman, isn't she—
A flash appeared on his targeting screen's peripherals. Responding in a split second, a burning scythe nearly cut his mech in half, but Hans managed to lower the Peacemaker and dodge it in half.
His feet pressed hard on the gas button, as he charged forward, passing by the woman who was wearing those nun-like clothes.
That must be her.
He frowned.
The Calamity of Hate.
He had already been briefed earlier by Empress Elisa about the last three calamities, so he knew who to search for. That meant, the other one…
He looked at Fort Patricia's walls. There was desperate fighting up there, as a mist consumed them. The soldiers were opening fire with their muskets and cannons at a figure obscured by it.
The creature seemed to have transformed into an eight-meter-tall humanoid creature. It was speeding through the walls. It resembled that of a hunched dwarf human, with an oversized mouth and claws.
That must be Avarice.
Hans dodged another one of the fiery dragons as he watched the monster eating two human soldiers. Its body was peppered by bullet wounds, but it didn't seem fazed.
He was now in a bad spot. He alone with normal soldiers, is fighting against two calamities.
My chance of dying just rose significantly.
Hans pushed the Peacemaker forward, trying to outrun the demon chasing him from behind.
On the other hand, he began fabricating a new set of bullets for his double coaxials, intending to use them soon.
Maybe cryofreeze will work.
Hans dodged a cannonball coming from Serenus' walls, as he turned to the eastern wall of Fort Patricia.
Yes, that's right, that should work.

+++ Alizée Amboise +++
After summoning her ideal, Alizée immediately jumped out of Lady Adelyn's mech.
I trained for this. The young girl's face turned and her feet dropped on the fortress's walls. I have to save them, alongside Sir Hans.
As the Angel of Purity, Alizée was one of the most powerful individuals on mankind's side. She knew that quite clearly after being trained by Lady Adelyn, the Empress, and Lady Emilia.
In the last few battles against demons however, she had been greatly sidelined by the adults around her.
All that time however wasn't wasted by Alizée. She trained, studied, and strengthened herself in the background.

She practiced controlling her ideal, her magic, and even went as far as taking courses on using a sword and a crossbow.
All in all, while she was nowhere near an adult in skill, she wasn't a pushover anymore.
She locked her eyes on the gigantic human-like monster rampaging on the northern side of the fortress.
Immediately, her mind conjured a crossbow in her hand, and she aimed squarely at the demon, crouching near one of the battlements.
With the Angel of Purity's ideal summoned, her eyes were now improved to such a great degree that she could see everything ahead of her, even with the mist produced by that monster obscuring things.
Most of all, after a few seconds of watching the creature's movements, she had a rough estimate in her mind of its future moves.
She noted everything, its pose, its speed, even the rapid reactions and turns it was taking.
Taking all of that into account, the bolt on her crossbow glowed pink, the light coming from it intensifying as she finished her calculations.
For my mother.
For my father.
For Sir Hans and Sir Adelyn.
Her lips briefly trembled, as the girl shut down her emotions.
"I'll kill you, Avarice," she coldly said.
A pink light flashed through the battlefield once more, and a bolt sliced through the monster's shoulder, sending it tumbling down the fortress wall.
Alizée's mind willed her crossbow out of existence, changing it into a pink-colored sword, the same weapon she used to kill Desire.
[BLINK STEP].
Reciting that skill she learned, she quickly teleported straight into Avarice's position, her sword slicing off one of the monster's sharp claws as she passed by it.
Shocked, the monster jumped on top of one of the buildings, before eyeing Alizée warily.
"You…" the monster growled, as its injury rapidly regenerated. "You're the Angel of Purity, aren't you?"
Alizée curtsied with childish elegance, before smiling at the creature.
"I've heard so many of you demons doing this too, so I shall introduce myself too," she gave Avarice a childish smile. "I am Alizée Amboise, the Angel of Purity. And today, I will make Sir Hans and Lady Adelyn proud."
Then, she aimed her sword at the monster.
"By killing you."

+++ Calamity of Hate +++
Vittoria just about had enough. This 'Grey Knight' was beyond difficult to kill.
He was fast.
He was strong.
And he knew how to dodge.
The fact that a massive machine was able to dodge her attacks, which normal humans, even trained knights and powerful mages, would fail to avoid, was astounding.
It was as if its pilot had absolute control over that machine. As if it were a true extension of his body.
Indeed, the Grey Knight may not be an angel or anything else, but…he was powerful.
Beyond powerful.
If I don't eliminate him with all my might…
She readied her scythe, jumping through the hail of gunfire peppering her body.
He'll do too much damage to His Holiness.
The fortunate part though was that the Grey Knight was now separated from his allies. There were no signs of the Angel of Love at the moment.
The Empress must be staying at the rear as a reserve.
On the other hand, the Angel of Purity and Justice was at Fort Patricia, both of them locked in combat with Niccolo, who had transformed into his titan monster form.
He seemed like he was buying time well, soaking up the attacks coming from the Angel of Justice's gold-plated mech, all while parrying blow after blow from the Angel of Purity.
It was quite the sight. One young girl in this strange pink-tinted armor fighting a gigantic monster, was supported by a mech that could blast massive holes through anything that its main gun struck.
He's not going to last long.
Not even the mist would help.
Vittoria stopped, as the Grey Knight's mech drifted to face her directly.
His gun was immediately aimed straight at her face. In response, she used her free hand to summon more demonic elementals.
A beast resembling that of a wolf appeared, and then another one that resembled that of a bull. Both of them were made up of fires, and they assembled beside her two draconic elementals.
She grinned at the sole mech in front of him.
He didn't have enough guns to face her, much less fight four magical monsters, including a calamity, one on one.
But, even with such stacked odds, the Grey Knight's mech faced her.
Silent.
Observing.
Confident.
There was not a hint of fear or hesitation inside it. It was truly a mechanical nightmare. If she didn't know that there was a squishy human inside it, she would have thought that he was inhuman.
Just like Injustice before he met his end in the hands of this man and his partner, the Angel of Injustice.
Her blood boiled at this man's outrageous courage.
"Do you really think you can triumph over me?" she asked, her tone cool and steady. "You, a mere human being, against me, a cardinal of the holy church?!"
"Of course, a lowly human like me will struggle against a demon like you."
He used his speakers for that. So many people must have heard it. Immediately, a strained smile appeared on her face.
"You insult me," she frowned. "I, a noble Virtus woman. How dare you insinuate that I am with the demons that rode with you here?"
"Your lies are finicky."
"Lies? You and that Empress you serve are the ones who lie."
She outstretched her hands.
"Serenus is mankind's salvation. Those who strike upon the servants of the pope are heretics driven by the demon's corruption."
She pointed at him.
"You, Grey Knight, you are one of those heretics. You will have no place in the gods' kingdom. You have chosen the side of hell, and thus, you will burn there for all eternity once I smite you!"
"You believe you can kill me?"
"Have you not listened to any words I said, you foolish heretic?!"
"You're way too angry—"
"How will I not be angered. As a servant of the gods, I am watching a foolish man who has been tempted by evil! You stand between the salvation of the huddled masses. How evil! How will you even redeem your rotten soul from your sins?!"
There was silence that came from the other end. Now that her elementals' powers had fully reached their zenith, she decided that it was now the best time to end this farce.
"If you cannot answer such a simple question," she raised her hand and pointed a finger at him. "Then die."
