Chapter 6: Chapter 6
With Jin finishing his shower and reading the messages sent to him, he stepped out to find that the cat hadn't eaten yet and decided to stay on his bed.
He sat beside her, petting her for a moment, then brought a plastic dish and put some food in it.
The cat approached the dish, sniffed the food, and then looked directly at him.
"What? Don't you like it?" Jin glanced at the food bag in confusion. It was supposed to be every cat's favorite flavor.
"Just eat it; there's no other food anyway." The cat raised her tiny paw in protest, but Jin only shrugged and went back to his bed.
As soon as he relaxed on the bed, the cat jumped onto his stomach, purring contentedly.
Jin extended an empty hand for her to play with while he continued using his phone, much to the cat's dissatisfaction.
She slowly crept closer to his face. Jin turned to look into her golden eyes and asked, "Alright, playtime's over. Who are you?"
"You should feel threatened letting a stranger into your home," the cat spoke in a feminine voice, making Jin feel a strange sense of familiarity.
Searching his memories, he couldn't think of anyone capable of transforming into a cat. He looked back at her and spoke again.
"You're too weak to be a threat to me, so I'm more interested in playing along with your act."
"How long have you known?" she asked curiously.
"Since the beginning." Jin had suspected something initially, but he became certain when she refused the food.
What kind of cat refuses food?
Not to mention reaching the school's high rooftop without assistance or even understanding his words with precision.
Jin had never met a cat like this.
"My performance must have been terrible, what a shame." The cat spoke softly, and thick mist filled the apartment.
Jin waved his hand to dispel the mist, revealing a woman with long black hair, golden eyes, a black kimono, and a golden sash around her waist.
Her cat ears were a clear indication of her heritage.
Jin was stunned, and before he could react, the woman jumped on him, embracing him tightly.
Looking at the woman in his arms, who seemed eager to merge into his very being, Jin recognized her.
"…Kuroka?"
Hearing her name from his lips, Kuroka looked at him with tearful eyes before biting his neck without saying a word.
"That hurts a bit, Kuroka." He rubbed his neck as he looked at her, knowing the reason for her anger.
"Don't you think you deserve it?" Kuroka scoffed and glanced at his neck. Perhaps she'd overdone it a bit, so she reached out and gently rubbed it.
"Does it really hurt?"
"Yes, I'm on the verge of death."
"Go to hell." Kuroka stood, folding her arms, waiting for his explanation.
Jin sighed and began recalling the past between them.
Back then, Jin roamed the demon territories endlessly, learning about the factions.
One day, he found a girl relentlessly pursued by other demons.
Jin saved her, and that girl was Kuroka.
Since then, they were inseparable from the ages of nine to fourteen.
At fourteen, the organization decided to send Jin to more dangerous, unstable areas, unsuitable for Kuroka.
He decided to leave, informing Kuroka and leaving her a letter, as she was in the demon world at the time. He didn't want to take her along.
He settled in Tokyo and told no one but his family and friends, who were relocating from Kyoto to Tokyo.
As a result, Kuroka couldn't find any trace of him until she came to Tokyo and finally found him.
"Kuroka, I—" Jin was about to explain when she interrupted him.
"You went to Tokyo because of the dangerous monsters I couldn't handle, and you feared for my safety, didn't you, nya~?" Though her tone ended in a soft feline purr, Jin knew she was genuinely angry.
"…Yes." Jin stood and looked at Kuroka. She had grown significantly in three years, making it hard for him to recognize her without her distinct traits.
"If you'd stayed just a little longer, you'd have realized I've become a ultimate-rank demon." Jin's eyes widened, and he asked Kuroka to channel some magic into her hand.
Kuroka conjured a small orb of energy. Feeling its destructive power, Jin realized she indeed possessed the strength of a ultimate-rank demon.
"…How did you manage that?" As far as Jin remembered, she lacked the necessary power back then. How had she grown so quickly?
"Not alone. Everyone's grown stronger than before, Jin. Everyone wants to beat you senseless, nya~."
"…" Jin fell silent, recalling the debts he owed for his abrupt departure.
If they were all as strong as Kuroka… that was terrifying.
"Don't worry too much. Instead, tell me, how many girls have you seduced in my absence?" Kuroka smiled, moving so close their noses nearly touched.
Jin knew there was no escape. He explained about Marin and a few others, leaving Kuroka astonished.
"Tsk, tsk. Still the same—saving everyone without exception, the dream knight, nya~." Despite her words, she seemed immensely happy.
'Jin is still my Jin,' she thought.
He would save anyone he could without expecting anything in return.
Even though she felt jealous about the growing number of girls around him, she was happy.
Those traits in him were what had saved her, brought them together, and made them inseparable.
Still, her happiness was mixed with jealousy, so since she was the first to find him, she decided to reward herself.
"What are you thinking about?" Jin asked as Kuroka's expression shifted between mild annoyance and pure joy repeatedly.
She didn't respond but pounced on him again, making him sit back on the bed.
"Oh, Jin, don't play dumb, nya~.
We're… going to have children!" Kuroka's hand moved somewhere specific before Jin grabbed it, stopping her.
"Stop messing around. I have other priorities now." Seeing Jin's genuine gaze during her attempts at seduction, Kuroka sighed and let it go—for now.
She'd ensure he'd "sheathe his sacred spear" soon enough.
After catching up with his friends and everyone, Jin learned the reason for Kuroka's increased strength.
Ranking games and contracts.
Kuroka's queen never held back in ranking games, pushing everyone to train tirelessly after Jin's departure.
The primary motivation seemed to be to beat him, but it was still good news.
Kuroka had left the underworld after him, searching Kyoto, Tokyo, and everywhere in Japan.
She even tried joining the organization but couldn't.
There were many as capable as Jin, so she didn't intend to die trying before meeting him.
The two talked until 2 a.m. Returning to the scene, Jin sat at the dining table, talking to Kuroka.
But instead of sitting across from him, she sat on his lap, occasionally feeding him leftovers from dinner.
Jin let her do as she pleased as long as it didn't involve anything intimate, as he thought it was a bit too soon.
Though he wasn't a virgin, he wanted to fully reconnect with Kuroka after three years before delving into adult matters.
"So, where do you plan to stay in Tokyo?" Jin asked, making her look at him as if he were an idiot.
"With you?" She tilted her head in confusion, having no intention of letting him go for even a moment.
Jin nodded in response, making Kuroka smile and pull him to bed.
But to her disappointment, he had no plans to do anything that night, so she settled for sleeping while clinging to him like an octopus.
