chapter 28
28 – Captain Dalton, let’s try it (2)
In the original game, Dalton, the white beard mercenary captain, faced this current crisis while remaining loyal to the Count of Salzheim until the end. I tried to move on to holding on.
The Whitebeard Mercenary Corps faced the worst situation in which 30% of its members were killed, but after this incident became known, it gained a reputation as an unconditionally reliable mercenary in the mercenary market.
It became an opportunity to be reborn as a trusted and sought mercenary and to terrifyingly call out the forces.
‘The reason why the Swiss mercenaries emerged was because of their strong combat power and desperate loyalty.’
I was walking around the camp with such thoughts in mind, but I heard Captain Dalton sighing while saying something.
“Ha, f*ck. No matter how good we are, what do we do? It’s like the f*ckin’ Count Salzheim soldiers and the other mercenary bastards are spreading sh*t so much that they can’t even clean their buttholes.”
As you said, our mercenaries, including the Martin Tens, led by me, are also playing a big role in their own way.
So even though the overall situation of the war was not so good, the Count of Salzheim served our mercenaries generous amounts of alcohol and meat a few days ago to congratulate them for their achievements.
I pretended not to hear Dalton’s words and put on a kind face before approaching with a bottle of cheap wine in both hands.
“Captain Dalton, why do you look a little uneasy?”
Dalton heard me and let out a big sigh, then smiled and punched me in the head.
“Damn it, the bastard who just got out of bed isn’t worried about grown-ups.”
“I received a good sword with mithril in it from the captain, shouldn’t I have to repay the favor at least like this?”
“Anyway, one mouth is f*cking good. A f*cked baby. “
“Aren’t you a loyalist among the loyalists who follow the captain, even if you say you’ll order an article even if I see you like this? Just say it out loud. Isn’t it something you don’t know? I’ll give you a plan to solve the problem.”
Dalton laughed as he lightly tapped my back with the palm of his hand.
“You are right. sh*t, even if the ploy is unreasonable, the mind will be at ease.”
“Yes, so try to calm down like a man.”
Once again Dalton let out a sigh that made the ground go out.
“It’s nothing else, if it goes on like this, the damn Earl of Salzheim, that idiot, will be very outraged.”
As I know the flow of the world in this game, I know the outcome of this war very well.
If this continues, Count Salzheim will not be able to defeat Count Philorand’s army and will be defeated.
The white beard mercenaries gain fame in the process, but suffer great losses by shedding a lot of blood.
So, if I don’t make a quick breakthrough here, it’s pretty obvious that our mercenaries will suffer as many casualties as in the original story.
But I’m not even a platoon commander who leads to a high-ranking mercenary, so if I pretended to know it for no reason, I’d rather hate it for showing up.
“Is that so, I thought it was okay because we were doing well…”
Dalton spoke in a loud voice as if outraged by my words.
“Oh, f*ck. That’s what I mean. What a f*ck! No, to be honest, your teenagers and our mercenaries are all feeding them right now! But why the hell do those assholes just hang around holding onto their ankles instead of chasing after us?”
“That’s right.”
“No, I just f*cking don’t want 200 people fighting twice as many enemies as we did. But, why are those idiots saying sh*t that they can’t even do their part? Isn’t it?”
At those words, I quietly nodded.
But what those idiots couldn’t help but do is that the mercenaries hired by Filorang are at least second-rate, if not first-rate scumbags.
Did Count Salzheim think of saving money in this serious war that might blow up the county, or did he just decide that it would be okay if he just summoned half-dozen guys and filled them up as usual.
In return for the poor preparations, other than our white beard mercenaries, as Dalton said, they are fooling around.
“That’s right. We are already low in numbers, but the regular soldiers of Count Salzheim are very incompetent, and the other mercenary bastards hired by the idiot are almost idiots, aren’t they?”
“Almost an asshole? Even those without limbs will fight better than them. After, f*ck. But do you know what the other mercenary commanders are saying to me?”
“What did you say?”
Dalton heard me and gnashed his teeth.
“I admit that you are great, but it is not that you are not good. Huh, if you keep your f*cking mouth shut, you’ll go somewhere in the middle.”
As you said, it is true that our mercenaries are proud. However, the fact that those bastards are idiots is a fact that even their parents can’t refute.
f*ck, did you even shut your mouth on your own if your skills were lacking? Then I’ll go somewhere in the middle.
This is why Dalton is pissed off by himself, and when he turns around, he must be sighing.
So Dalton complained to me for an hour.
“Ha, f*ck. Yeah, I didn’t say it because I thought if I talked about this to Heinz or anyone else, they’d say let’s jump out right now. Even if you’re a sucker, I feel much better after talking to you who has hearing loss.”
“Well, I can do it anytime, as long as it’s a lift. By the way, now that I’ve heard enough about the captain, would you please listen to me?”
Dalton clicked his tongue helplessly.
“Yes, f*ck. Instead, if you talk about giving back the money you received and jumping out like the Heinz guy, he will grind his face right on the ground.”
Vice-captain Heinz did not say anything wrong in this case.
Because in order to run a mercenary corps, there must be mercenaries belonging to it to do anything, but if all of them are killed, there is nothing they can do.
I replied with a shrug.
“Since what the captain is aiming for is sure to lose anyway, are you thinking of fighting to the end and gaining a reputation rather than risking losing?”
Dalton patted me on the back and laughed.
“f*ck, yes. Fit very well. Let’s say we return the money and cancel the contract. On that day, the reputation of our mercenary army will plummet to the floor. Then there is no money back, and there is no next job at all. The only conclusion is that you have to cut open and search everything, damn it.”
Nobles who hire mercenaries pay money to entrust them with the role of protecting their lives and interests.
By the way, even if the bastards called mercenaries returned the money, who would want to hire the mercenaries if they were labeled as having broken the contract and jumped out under unfavorable circumstances?
I’d rather use kids whose skills haven’t been properly verified than using those guys, it would be a relief.
I suggested with the most evil smile.
“Then, why don’t you go on a splendid rampage now that this has happened? In this way, the captain, the vice-captain, and I put those who say they use knives inside the mercenary corps at the forefront and risk their lives to fight.”
Dalton laughed maniacally when he heard that.
“Crazy bastard, it seems better than breaking the contract and running away like Heinz said. Does that make sense?”
“Then are you going to let go and run away like this? From now on, I will try to cool down the words inside.”
“Gra, it’s crazy.”
“Seriously, we don’t owe the merchants anything, do we? After losing this war, I think I’m going to be screwed because I can’t pay my salary and I don’t have money, but if I sell the things I trusted to Count Salzheim, I’ll be able to go out in a bigger war with a lot of money. You’re thinking of making up for the deficit by doing that, right?”
If I hadn’t thought of that, I wouldn’t have listened to Vice-Chief Heinz’s words, returned the down payment and signed another contract.
“That’s why we’re going to get paid and roll like crazy under the Count of Salzheim, just relax and try to the end. Once a contract is signed, mercenaries who are not afraid of sacrifice and take responsibility until the end, how cool are they?”
“Anyway, wouldn’t it be too dangerous?”
At that, I shook my head.
“Think of it the other way around. Whatever it is, it’s better to scream hot than to be vague. If we just keep going like this, it’s obvious that our mercenaries will be screwed.”
“…… “
Now that the nobleman who said that he would go to the floor in the face if he told me to break the contract and run away came out so stuffy, now my anger is exploding.
So I spoke even more strongly.
“In the first place, although these guys are frankly idiots, aren’t they just idiots who do their share? It’s to show that a few white-beard mercenaries, who use some swords, step out in front of them and use their enemies. If that’s how we bring the atmosphere to our side, how can we win from then on? If we win this war like that, the ransom for the captain and the Whitebeard mercenaries is obvious.”
A loyal man who stays with even a gloomy idiot employer who is about to lose in war, once a contract is signed, and a mercenary commander who saves his life even by grabbing his collar if the employer is in the middle of a war.
“Let’s try it. Damn it anyway, if you go on like this, everyone will follow you.”
As I continued to persuade him strongly, Dalton finally spoke in a low voice.
“f*ck, yes. Let’s try it!”
Captain Dalton went that route and convinced everyone.
The next day, our mercenary troops stood in the vanguard of the Salzheim Count’s army, and in the center, the most visible.
