Chapter 7 - The Imperial Concubine is having an affair with the Prime Minister
After attending to the Emperor’s change of clothes and seeing him off, Consort De immediately summoned her confidant: “How’s the matter I asked you to handle? Have all the preparations been made?”
“Rest assured, Your Highness, everything is ready.”
“That’s good,” Consort De took out a fragrant balm and applied some on her neck and wrists. The sweet scent spread and lingered for a long time.
She nodded with satisfaction: “After I succeed, reward that person with a sum of money.”
Since Concubine Jiang gained favor, His Majesty rarely visited her palace. Although she was still young and had no worries about bearing children, who wouldn’t want to ascend to that high position?
The Second Prince was sickly. Once she conceived the dragon’s heir, she only needed to make a slight move…
As for that venomous Empress, thinking of the poison the Empress had used on her before, she gritted her teeth in hatred. She would definitely not let her off!
And now, what she needed to do was to fight for His Majesty’s favor.
Consort De admired her young and beautiful face in the bronze mirror. In the midst of her satisfaction, she thought of Jiang Xin Ren’s delicate flower-like face, and her expression darkened: “Concubine Jiang, you can’t stay for long.”
This ill will persisted until the start of the winter hunt. Consort De stood beside the Emperor with a smile, her malicious gaze sweeping towards Jiang Xin Ren who was not far away as she smiled charmingly.
Jiang Xin Ren had been keeping an eye on Consort De, naturally capturing the malice in her eyes. She returned the smile.
The two of us are irreconcilable enemies. You always want to harm me, and I want to harm you. Only one of us can die…
She thought coldly: The one to die will definitely not be me.
Zhuang He Ming did not follow by the Emperor’s side, standing not too far away with an indifferent expression.
But even at this distance, he could still smell the sweet scent similar to nectar coming from Consort De.
Applying this kind of fragrance in the mountains, he looked towards where the concubines were and indeed saw that person watching Consort De with a hint of a spectating smile on her lips.
This was her scheme, Zhuang He Ming thought, then lowered his head again.
The Emperor only symbolically shot a few arrows before returning to the camp. Consort De immediately clung to him, nestling beside the Emperor.
Gui Pin(Concubine) Qiao watched with cold eyes, unable to suppress the sourness in her heart. She complained to Jiang Xin Ren beside her: “Being so unrestrained in public, she truly has no sense of propriety.”
She only dared to say this in front of her. Jiang Xin Ren pulled her cloak tighter and smiled without speaking.
“It’s so warm, yet MeiMei(Little Sister) is still wearing a cloak?”
“Please forgive me, JieJie(Older Sister). This concubine recently suffered from an incident and now has a weak body. I’m quite afraid of cold and chills.”
Gui Pin(Concubine) Qiao naturally knew about the Empress’ poisoning incident and didn’t dare to say more. Feeling down, she stopped talking and looked around. Suddenly, as if discovering something, she exclaimed: “Oh, there are actually butterflies here?”
Everyone looked over and indeed saw butterflies fluttering and dancing towards them.
The butterfly danced gracefully in the air for a long time before landing on Consort De.
The Emperor was greatly astonished and marveled: “A Fei (Beloved Consort), you are able to attract the butterflies.”
Consort De put on a bewildered yet joyful expression: “Perhaps it was the fragrance on this concubine’s body that attracted the butterfly.”
“Haha,” the Emperor embraced her and said, “Not only does this butterfly-like it, but I also very much enjoy it.”
“Your Majesty–” Consort De’s face flushed red as she coquettishly pouted.
Just as the two were sticking close and being affectionate, they heard Concubine Qiao cry out in alarm: “What’s that flying over there again?!”
Consort De was stunned. She had already released all the arranged butterflies, right? Could it be that real butterflies were actually attracted by her?
Looking up, she saw a dense black mass accompanied by a buzzing sound as they flew.
“It’s bees!”
“Protect the Emperor! Quickly protect the Emperor!”
Everyone instantly fell into a panic, screams erupting one after another as they all fled in terror without regard for direction.
Consort De also turned pale with fright. She stood up and ran, but no matter where she went, the bees stubbornly followed her.
The Emperor, who was also covered in that sickly sweet scent, had his face turn ashen. Hindered by imperial dignity, he couldn’t flee with his head covered like a mouse. He could only watch helplessly as the swarm approached. The guards in front of him wielded their weapons, but to no avail.
“Your Majesty!” Jiang Xin Ren, instead of retreating, advanced. She grabbed the sides of her cloak and ran towards the Emperor, then spread the cloak and shielded the Emperor within it.
To advance her rank, the most effective and reliable way was through the grace of saving the Emperor.
To avoid exposing any flaws, the cloak on her body was just the right size for her figure. At this moment, it could barely cover one person. She closed her eyes, prepared to be stung.
It would be a lie to say she wasn’t nervous. When unable to see anything, one’s hearing becomes more acute. She could clearly hear the buzzing of the swarm, the panicked shouts of others, and the sound of the wind lifted by a large cloak.
Jiang Xin Ren only felt a weight on her body.
It was a large cloak covering her, broad and thick, shielding her tightly, isolating the buzzing sound and the stings of the bees.
She opened her eyes in a daze. In the air she was breathing, the faint cold fragrance of bamboo was emitted from the cloak. She could only think of one person:
Zhuang He Ming.
Was it him?
At this moment, her curiosity was unprecedentedly strong. At the risk of being stung, she lifted a corner of the cloak and looked out, meeting the man’s clear and cold eyes.
This was the first time Zhuang He Ming had seen her at such close range. She was hidden under his cloak, her small face surrounded by fur, appearing even more delicate, with brows like painted ink and a face like peach petals, she was as enchanting as a flower.
She was more beautiful than he had imagined. Zhuang He Ming thought as he raised his hand to pull down the cloak, leaving no gap, and then stepped aside.
His body had a light scent, and the bees flew past him without stopping. The swarm had no interest in this wooden stake and instead flew off to chase the disheveled Consort De.
This chaotic scene only ended when the guards lit torches to drive away the swarm. Jiang Xin Ren, still shaken, touched her chest and asked the Emperor with concern:
“Your Majesty, are you alright?”
Jiang Xin Ren came in time, and the Emperor was not stung. Seeing Jiang Xin Ren’s frightened appearance, his heart softened: “This time, it was all thanks to Beloved Concubine. I am unharmed.”
Among so many people, only Concubine Jiang and Jing Mu rushed to his side to save him. The Emperor sighed in his heart and patted her hand: “Beloved Concubine, when we return to the palace, I will definitely reward you generously.”
Jiang Xin Ren pretended to be aggrieved: “Protecting Your Majesty is what this concubine’s heart desires. Your Majesty saying this makes it seem like this concubine had ulterior motives. This concubine doesn’t need those rewards.”
What use were gold, silver, and jewels? What she risked her life for this time was not just wealth!
“It is I who wants to reward Beloved Concubine.” The Emperor made a decision in his heart.
Zhuang He Ming arranged for the guards to patrol the surroundings and dispose of all the nearby beehives to avoid such incidents from happening again. He then came before the Emperor, lifted his robe, and knelt down:
“This time, it was this subject’s negligence that caused this grave mistake. I beg Your Majesty to forgive… my crime.”
Jiang Xin Ren walked out from behind the Emperor and reached out to support his arms, saying, “What fault does the Prime Minister have? If it weren’t for you selflessly offering your cloak, I’m afraid…”
Her fair and delicate hands rested on his forearms. Following the gentle force, he stood up straight. Their eyes met for a moment, merging and parting in an instant.
The Emperor, unaware, laughed: “A Fei(Beloved Concubine) is right. Jing Mu, what fault do you have? I should be thanking you instead.”
Zhuang He Ming cupped his hands: “I dare not.”
Thinking of the recent danger, the Emperor’s face darkened as he asked, “Have you found out what happened?”
“Bees are attracted to sweet scents. This subject thinks that perhaps the fragrance used by Consort De was similar to nectar, so…” He couldn’t say more than that.
Jiang Xin Ren pressed her lips together, suppressing her laughter.
The Emperor must have already suspected it was Consort De’s doing. Originally, he had five parts anger, but with Zhuang He Ming’s words, another five parts were added. In this way, her plan, which she had originally scored eight points, had a perfect conclusion.
Perhaps she should find an opportunity to properly thank him, Jiang Xin Ren thought.
