Chapter 20: Minjin's Alone and Heo Yeong-hwan's Company
Minjin finally arrived at the house she thought Minjun was living in. She stopped outside, gazing up at the home before her.
"This must be it, right?" she murmured, looking around to confirm she hadn't made an error.
Her gaze landed on the nameplate next to the door, which displayed "Kang" in clean engraving. She held her breath—she had located the correct place.
Minjin paused briefly, uncertainty settling in.
As Minjin heard footsteps coming from the house, panic washed over her. Instinct kicked in, and she hurriedly ducked behind a nearby parked car. Peering out from her concealment, she spotted Minjun emerging from the gate, looking just as she recalled. "T-that's Minjun," she murmured.
Minjin found herself unable to resist following him, keeping a few steps back and hiding behind objects whenever he looked around. Though she felt somewhat like a stalker, her curiosity kept pushing her onward.
Minjun eventually entered a building, and Minjin squinted at the sign above. It indicated a study room where students could concentrate on their tasks. Curious, she followed him inside and saw Minjun sitting alone at a desk, his head buried in a book. Nearby, a few girls were watching him intently, whispering amongst themselves.
Minjin let out a soft sigh. "He's incredibly dull," she whispered quietly. "He's even studying on the weekends."
###
As Monday arrived, Minjin was gazing out the window at her desk. She couldn't believe she would attend the same school as Minjun. Upon arriving in Korea, he had never crossed her mind. Then, she recalled the letter she had promised to return to him. She sighed and thought she might, but not given her family's circumstances. She questioned whether he wished to be friends now that he was popular.
Kim Aecha's coldness toward Minjin intensified. Their previously vibrant and friendly conversations shifted to brief nods and averted gazes. The other girls in their group noticed the rising tension and frequently attempted to invite Minjin to join them. Still, Minjin graciously turned down their offers, aware of the strain and wishing to avoid further drama. She began to spend more time alone, eating lunch alone in solitude.
Heo Yeong-hwan noticed something was different. He saw Minjin eating alone during lunch, and her usual friends were absent. Feeling curious to check on her, he invited his friends to sit with her during lunch, and they tried to spark conversations. Though Minjin appeared reluctant at first, she gradually began to open up.
Heo Yeong-hwan and his pals found Minjin sitting alone again. Determined not to let her feel isolated, they approached her table again. Heo Yeong-hwan gave her a quick, playful grin as he sat down, his friends following suit. They chatted casually, and Minjin seemed to relax.
Later that afternoon, as Heo Yeong-hwan descended the staircase post-class, his friends surrounded him with playful grins.
"Why do you always hang out with Park Minjin?" one of them asked, giving him a teasing grin.
Heo Yeong-hwan shrugged, attempting to seem nonchalant. "What's wrong with that?"
His friend smiled broadly, moving in closer. "You can't be saying you like her?!"
Before he could say anything, another friend joked, "Yeah, we noticed you grinning like a fool whenever she's around."
Flustered, Heo Yeong-hwan swiftly covered his friend's mouth with his hand, looking around to ensure no one else was listening. "Shh! Don't say silly things," he snapped, his cheeks red.
The two friends erupted in laughter. "So, it's true then?" they teased, nudging him playfully.
Heo Yeong-hwan rolled his eyes, playfully pushing the thoughts aside while grappling with a peculiar embarrassment. Despite his desire to ignore it, he couldn't shake the realization that thoughts of Minjin had been occupying his mind more frequently lately.
One of Heo Yeong-hwan's friends mischievously grinned and said, "If you like her, we'll treat her as if she's our boss!"
Heo Yeong-hwan paused, gazing at his friends with a serious look. "Promise?" He extended his pinky finger, indicating a pinky swear.
The two friends exchanged glances, pausing briefly before smiling widely. They intertwined their pinkies with Heo Yeong-hwan's and declared together, "I promise."
Heo Yeong-hwan chuckled in relief, feeling the tension lift. "Okay, then. If you ever cause her trouble, you must face me first."
His friends laughed, but their tone was earnest as they responded, "Deal."
