Pruned Trees Re-Sprout!! ~ Ragazza Volpe Magica ~

Chapter 218 - Daytrip Downtown

After a week of housing Casey and her pair of Resonators, Saturday arrived to silence.

No chaos, no spellcasting, just peace and quiet.

"Huh…" Shouri stared at the ceiling, noting it had been missed in the girl's painting efforts. He could hear himself think. Taika and Rebecca occupied either side of him, their tails entangled in his legs. He didn't usually sleep on his back, but they must have shifted into these positions overnight.

Pacifica was wrapped around Rebecca's back like an invasive vine staking her claim. He didn't even need his eyes to know what serene smiles they all wore. Bliss, happiness, love radiated from their rhythm.

If he really focused on his rhythm and his connection with the others, he could feel their serenity pouring into him.

Peace on planet Riterra.

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK

"I'm killing whoever is behind that door," Shouri growled as his precious trio were dragged out of their slumber against their will.

"Shouri! Get up! It's morning!" Colette shouted from outside.
"I knew it, Rebecca get my knife," Shouri demanded, refusing to leave the comfort of his bed despite the noise outside.
"Bossman we don't have a knife," Rebecca mumbled, rubbing the sleep from her eyes.
"Damn it, gotta add that to the list."

Despite the ire in the young guildmaster, he did rally his trio out of bed and they prepared for their day. Their mornings were so routine no matter what they had planned after.

Taika on breakfast duty
Pacifica in the shower.
Shouri reading the news while sitting on the edge of the bed.
Rebecca sat to Shouri, still waking up.

knock knock

Rebecca's ears flicked and she jumped to her feet, answering the much gentler knock than the one that woke them up.

"Morning everyone!" greeted Emily as she was allowed into the room.
"Hey Ems." Shouri waved, not looking up from his tuner. "What's up?"
"Just checking to see if you all were up," she said, plopping down in the chair by the small desk.

"Barely. Why was Colette trying to tear down my door at 5AM?" asked Shouri.
"Dunno." Emily shrugged. "She seemed pretty excited about going to the Festa."
"Well she didn't have to be excited so loudly," grumbled the guildmaster.

Taika handed out breakfast while the two Maestros spoke. It was a simple affair this morning, being eggs, fruit, toast, and sausage – enough to fill them up and keep them content through lunchtime.

"Oh thank you," said Emily, not expecting food.
"Con piacere," Taika replied, while she turned the corner back into the kitchen.

Between bites, Shouri spoke. "So how the hell are we getting everyone there?" Shouri questioned. "You and Ritika can ride on your bike," he noted.

Emily nodded, finishing her current mouthful of food. "I was gonna just re-summon Soot's body away from the building. Don't want to attract too much attention," she told him. "As for Colette, she took the Oltre Casey and her group took. Pretty big van."

"What about Elijah?" asked Shouri.
"Oh, good question. Haven't heard a peep from him or Zino all morning," Emily hummed in thought.

The two Maestros finished up their breakfast and left the plates to Taika. They stepped out into the cold December morning and wandered down to Elijah's room. Shouri knocked on his door.

Silence.

Shouri and Emily exchanged a glance. Emily took a turn, knocking a bit harder. "Hey Elijah! Wanna come to the Resonator Festa?" she shouted.

Silence, another more concerned look was exchanged between the two Maestros. Emily pulled her black tuner from her side and clicked the talk button. "Hey Al, Rilevare l'intenzione, Lento please."

"You got it," the dragon's voice buzzed from the speaker.

A moment later Emily's tuner displayed a map of the guildhall and showed-

"He's not here?" The princess raised a brow.

Shouri shook his head and thumbed up a message to Elijah. He got a response instantly, which earned silent ire. Before Emily could ask what was wrong, he thrust the screen in her face. She grabbed the device to steady it so she could read what was said.

"Well, that answers that," Emily said, though she frowned as she did so. "Why wouldn't he tell us?" she wondered, still scrutinizing the map. The blonde Maestro furrowed her brow, humming as she looked between the screen and the east end of the guild hall.

"What's up Ems?" asked Shouri.
"Uh… Dancer isn't here," she flashed the map to Shouri revealing there was one dot missing where it should have been.

The dread hit Shouri for only a moment, until he gave it some serious thought.

If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

"Did Casey take him with?" he asked.
"Huh? Oh… I guess he has been hanging out with them. Hang on." Emily held her tuner to her ear. After a moment she spoke.

"Hey Colette, when you all left, did you take Dancer with you?"
"Okay. Keep an eye on him please." Emily nodded and flashed a thumbs up to Shouri.
"See you in a bit."

Shouri stroked his chin in thought, humming thoughtfully to himself. "I see," he muttered.

"Everyone have everything?" Shouri asked from the front passenger seat. Rebecca had the honor of taking the wheel this morning.

Taika and Pacifica had the first-row seats while Miro, Vince, and Mila occupied the back row (Zephyr sat on Vince's head.)

"Yeah!" came the shouts from the back.

Shouri shot a thumbs up to Emily on her motorcycle, who waved back and took off with Ritika at her back and Albarich flying behind her.

With that loud departure, Rebecca shifted the van into drive and their trip to the Dalliva stadium began in earnest.

"I can't wait to see the Festa," Taika said with wonder.
"Me too! It sounds really cool!" Pacifica chimed in.

"How long have these been a thing?" Mila questioned.
"Dunno," Zephyr shrugged. "I never heard of them," she added.
"Looks like ten years or something," said Vince, noting the establishment date of 2008 on the official website.

"Ten years, very short time," Miro noted. "How old are the battling tournaments?" asked the Natural.

"It'll be the bicentennial in two years," said Shouri.

Miro grunted and pulled out his dictionary to translate the unfamiliar word. After a moment he gasped. "Two hundred?" he asked to make sure he was looking at the correct word.

"Yep, been a thing for a hot minute," Rebecca confirmed.

"Wonder why no one has thought to have a different sport for Resonators," said Miro.

"There are tons of Resonator-based sports out there, just none of them get as much limelight as the tournament series," Shouri replied.

"Ah."

The van rolled on and they eventually got downtown which saw much more traffic than anyone had expected.

"Seriously, how have we never heard of this shit with this many people here?!" Rebecca hissed as she fought through the stop and go traffic. Right before she was about to pull into the parking garage, one of the attendant Resonators put up a barricade with a sign affixed to the front of it.

PARKING LOT FULL
ADDITIONAL PARKING IN SOUTHSIDE GARAGE

"Uuuugh!" Rebecca cried out, resisting the urge to slam her head into the steering wheel.

Shouri scrambled to pull out a tuner and figure out where the garage the sign was talking about was. "Go left," he directed.

"Fiiiine…" Rebecca jerked the wheel left and stopped holding up traffic.

Rebecca fell out of the driver's seat, collapsing into a heap on the cold concrete below. "Freedommmm…" she groaned.

"I did not think it'd take us twenty minutes to find a parking spot," Shouri commented as he got out of the van.

The side doors opened, allowing the rest of the group to pile out.

"It's so big," Taika noted with wonder.
"Si, lots of concrete, did not know Maestros built like this," Miro agreed.

Taika shot a bitter glare at the little Natural and put Shouri between her and him.
"He's fine," Shouri insisted on a whisper. Regardless Taika kept a close eye on the earth element. "You were fine in the van with him sitting behind you," Shouri pointed out. Taika shook her head.

Miro took the hint and allowed Vince and Mila to stand between them as well, furthering the distance between the two.

With their travel formation secured, they locked up the van and began walking around the garage. Eventually after wandering around and dodging other cars looking to park, they found the elevators.

Their group was big enough that they took up a whole cabin on their own and found their way to the ground floor.

Downtown Dalliva was a big city in all respects. Tall buildings surrounded them in a dense jungle of steel and glass. Joining them on the ground level were many other Maestros and Resonators all eagerly chatting as they made their way toward the stadium.

Shouri looked around as they walked, his curiosity piqued. The crowds were similar to the ones he saw in Naiza for Nationals, right down to the enthusiasm of the soon to be audience members who discussed what acts they were excited to see. He didn't recognize any of the names being hotly debated.

It just reaffirmed that the world was a lot bigger than he had given it credit for and his view of things was small and limited. He wasn't the only one sharing in this feeling. Taika, Pacifica, and Rebecca all took in the sights with equal curiosity.

"2019 Dalliva Resonator Festa" scrolled across the electronic message board above stadium's entrance. Plastered all over the building were the various organizations that sponsored the event. A notable absence was any Klein Foundation branding, which they had gotten used to seeing with battling events.

"2019? But it's still 2018?" Taika frowned as she watched the text scroll by.
"They must start their season at a different time of the year," Rebecca speculated.
"Looks like their version of worlds happens in late July. According to this, you need to win eight Festa medals in order to qualify for the World Festa," Shouri read off his tuner.

"Ohhh…" came three gasps of understanding.

The line to get into the stadium was, as expected, a long one. Thankfully it seemed to be moving fast.

"Woah! Zephyr? What's wrong?!"
"No. No! I can't go in there! Not again!"

Shouri whipped around to see Mila and Vince trying to restrain a panicked Zephyr, who looked as if they were about to feed her to a hungry beast from how hard she struggled.

"What's going on?" Shouri asked.
"Don't take me back! I'll be a good fairy I promise!" cried the solar element.

Shouri stepped over and helped keep her still.

"Zephyr, please, talk to us, what's going on?" asked Vince.

The fairy caught her Maestro's pleading gaze and managed to still her heart, but was frozen with a fear they had not seen out of her before.

"Please," Vince pleaded once again.
"It's him, the man my village sacrificed me to…" a tiny arm was pointed at one logo in particular.

"The René Group"
