Chapter 242 Consolidating Trust Between Husband and Wife (3)_1
They didn't even recognize the Horne family matriarch, yet they dared to come out and cause trouble.
Any old lady could be kidnapped, but not the Horne family's. Didn't they know that Glades Horne, the Young Master of the Horne family, held sway over both the underworld and the lawful world? Even the mafia boss Jonathan Allen had to call Glades Horne brother.
The police officers remembered a day nearly two months ago when Glades Horne himself had reported a robbery. A woman's money had been stolen, but it was Julia Bluen, the second young miss of the Bluen family, who had bravely chased the robber on her bicycle. That incident had also infuriated Young Master Horne. Later, Jonathan Allen himself had been called in, and the robber was sentenced to several years in prison. The robber's boss had also been implicated and received a harsh lesson from Jonathan Allen.
That time, it wasn't someone from the Horne family who was in trouble, yet Glades had been so angry. This time, it was the elderly Mrs. Horne who was in trouble. One could imagine how furious Glades would be.
"I don't know them, but they've helped me a few times. I haven't even had the chance to learn their names before they left in a hurry," Julia Bluen didn't reveal the doubts in her mind. She decided to wait for Glades Horne to arrive; then she would know everything.
The police hadn't yet put the four kidnappers into the police car when Glades Horne's car arrived.
He had originally rerouted to the Senior Activity Center, but Uncle Ying called and told him what happened, prompting him to head to the Emperor hotel instead.
"Grandma, are you all right?" Glades Horne got out of the car and strode toward the old lady. His handsome face was overshadowed by an impending storm, and his deep eyes flickered with twin flames. Apart from his familiar noble aura, there was also a distinct scent of gunpowder about him.
Someone dared to kidnap his grandmother, Glades Horne's grandmother! It seemed those kidnappers didn't know how the word "death" was written.
"Glades, you're here. Grandma's fine," the old lady said with a slight smile, walking toward Glades, supported by Julia and Aunt Mei.
Julia Bluen pursed her red lips, glancing at Glades Horne without a word.
Her glance left Glades utterly puzzled, and her reaction made him feel completely at a loss.
What did I do?
Why is Julia Bluen treating me like this?
Seeing him arrive, she hadn't smiled or called his name, nor had she greeted him as usual. If she hadn't been supporting the old lady, she might have stood further away.
Julia Bluen merely pursed her lips and said nothing, yet this alone made Glades Horne acutely aware that something was amiss with her.
"Young Master Horne," the police captain in charge also approached Glades Horne. They had already learned the details of what happened from the security guards and from pedestrians who had witnessed the scene.
After the captain briefed Glades Horne on the situation, his expression grew even darker. He said coldly, "The police know how to handle cases, don't they?" The captain hastily assured him that they would handle it according to the law. He then quickly added that they would first take the kidnappers back to the station for interrogation and asked if Glades Horne could bring the old lady to the Police Station later to make a statement.
Glades Horne gave a curt nod.
After the police officers took the kidnappers away, the old lady insisted on going to the Activity Center for her event. Glades Horne had Uncle Ying and Aunt Mei continue to escort the old lady to the Activity Center. He, meanwhile, prepared to take Julia Bluen to the Police Station to make a statement.
Julia Bluen didn't object to his decision, but she still didn't speak to him. After helping the old lady into the car, she only spoke to Mrs. Horne, reminding Aunt Mei and Uncle Ying to take good care of her. She also told the old lady that after making her statement, she would still come to accompany her. Julia said that she didn't have to work today or tomorrow and would stay with Mrs. Horne. This made the old lady smile happily and leave in good spirits, but it left Glades Horne feeling extremely frustrated.
I really don't know what I did to make my treasured wife unhappy.
Why hasn't Julia spoken a word to me since I appeared?
Could it be that Grandma took advantage of my absence to say bad things about me to her?
But I've always doted on Julia, and Grandma likes her very much too. She would never try to drive a wedge between us. Something else must have happened.
Glades Horne called Hansen Ruiz and then Jonathan Allen. When Jonathan Allen heard that someone had actually tried to kidnap Mrs. Horne, he was so shocked his phone almost slipped from his grasp. Only after Jonathan Allen repeatedly assured him he would thoroughly investigate the matter did Glades Horne coldly reply that he would wait for news, then hung up.
Julia glanced at the decisive and efficient Glades Horne, noting the heavy gloom on his handsome face. She thought about how he always kept things from her, doing so much for her behind her back. She knew she should be touched—and indeed, she truly was—but she still disliked him hiding things from her.
Once the old lady had left, Julia pursed her lips and walked to Glades Horne's car, opened the door, and got in. However, she sat in the back seat, not the front passenger seat.
When Glades Horne walked toward his car, his steps were, uncharacteristically, a little frantic. Julia's reaction flustered him, making him feel as if she had found out he was having an affair, keeping a mistress, and had an illegitimate child. Heaven knew that despite his intelligence, he just couldn't figure out why his beloved wife was giving him the silent treatment right now.
When the police captain was explaining what happened, Glades had noted the appearance of the two plainclothes bodyguards. He didn't think Julia could have identified those two men as the bodyguards he had hired to protect her. He had suggested hiring bodyguards for her before, but she had refused. Apart from this, he really couldn't think of any other reason why his dear wife would be silent towards him.
Could Julia really have known that those two men were the plainclothes bodyguards I hired? Is that possible? Even the police and all the bystanders who witnessed the incident thought the two men were just passersby who had acted heroically.
Glades Horne had hired only four plainclothes bodyguards to work in shifts, protecting Julia Bluen twenty-four hours a day. He didn't require them to report Julia Bluen's whereabouts to him. Therefore, Glades Horne didn't know that Julia Bluen had already encountered those two men three times. And, by sheer coincidence, it had always been the same two bodyguards on shift during those encounters, so Julia naturally recognized them.
"Julia," Glades Horne didn't get into the driver's seat. Instead, he slipped into the back seat with her, closed the door, and the tinted windows shielded them from outside view. As soon as he sat down, he stretched out his long arms, pulling Julia into his embrace. His handsome face drew close to hers, his warm breath fanning softly against her skin. His deep eyes gazed at her tenderly as he asked in an extremely gentle voice, "What's wrong?"
