Chapter 543 What to do...
With a goal in mind, Alex started to make his way toward the city. Brontes strided alongside him with a combination of somewhat carefree and cautious steps. He was essentially a walking oxymoron of emotion. The Journey wasn't far by Alex's standards, about 15,000 kilometres away from his current position, and thanks to his speed, it would only take a couple minutes at best to get there.
There wasn't even any point in even considering whether Brontes could do it or not. Alex had no doubt that he could probably make his way over there in an instant if he wanted to. After all, he was even more powerful than Principal Farnes, and if Farnes could travel between Earth and Mars in an instant, without being able to be detected by Alex's spatial detection at all, then Brontes could probably achieve much greater feats.
A few minutes of travel passed as expected, and Alex had noticed several dozens or hundreds of beasts on the way, but they were all too far below his level to consider delaying his approach over. At his current level, anything that wasn't a higher life form was useless to even worry about, unless they were King class or above, that was.
However, even though Alex had Brontes beside him, he didn't let overconfidence overwhelm him. Sure, he had a Divine beast companion, so the chances of them encountering an enemy that could threaten them was few and far between.
But Brontes' also wasn't at his peak state – he was only awake because the System forced him out of his slumber. If it weren't for Alex entering the Primordial Expanse, Brontes would still be sleeping soundly inside the ship for however much longer.
From what he could feel through his connection to the beast, Alex guessed that Brontes probably had about the same level of power as Althea in his current state.
This was still huge of course, but you could never be too safe.
"Any idea how long it'll take for you to reach your peak again, lil buddy?" Alex asked out of sheer boredom while the two flashed over the terrain at speeds far surpassing anything but awakened could reach in this realm.
Brontes had grown over the last week, and so could understand some meaning and words thanks to Alex's persistent conversing with it, and so he vaguely understood what Alex was asking.
But of course, not being able to speak, his answer was very vague.
Brontes turned his head slightly, looking at Alex with his deep, iris-less eyes and sent a response over through their connection.
Through their bond, Alex felt the incoming emotions of what he interpreted to be the beast's vague response — 'Very sleepy' was essentially all that it contained.
"Not very helpful, buddy." Alex murmured, shaking his head with a slight grin. Seeing Brontes try his best at something so simple was quite quite…
"But I get it. You just woke up, and the System didn't exactly warn you or ask for your permission before doing so. Don't worry, you'll be back to your prime soon enough. I promise!"
Alex had already warmed up to Brontes – as did Brontes to Alex – over the last week, and so Alex's cautious, almost timid approach to the Divine beast had mostly faded.
Brontes let out a low rumble that Alex interpreted as agreement – or at least a sound of contentment. They continued their running, with the landscape stretching around them, until they came to a complete stop.
Eventually, the massive walls of the city came into view, looking like a fortress of dark steel, with shimmering letters in a language Alex couldn't quite understand scattered across the walls in a symmetrical, structured pattern.
Alex had already painted a picture of the place in his mind thanks to his spatial perception, but seeing it in person only enhanced the impressive scene he was seeing.
"Well, I think its clear that the other cities I've visited in the Primordial Expanse don't even hold a candle to this one…" Alex muttered his thoughts aloud.
It was quite a confusing scene if he was being honest — for such a huge city, they sure were quite isolated, with only a few roads leading in and out.
You'd think that a city of this size would have a vast and enhanced trade situation going on, but it clearly didn't seem like it.
This only made things trickier for people like Alex, complete outsiders with no explainable backgrounds, from entering the city without kicking up much of a fuss.
And upon realising this, Alex also remembered something just as, if not even more important…
A realisation struck him like a bolt of lightning and he froze mid step, looking at Brontes.
"Wait a second…" he muttered, rubbing his forehead as he was clearly stressed over something. "Getting into the issue is gonna be a pain for me, but its doable, but what about you?"
Brontes blinked at him innocently, flicking his tail entirely unconcerned about Alex's sudden realisation.
He may be growing up and learning quite fast, but he was still just a 1 week old baby at heart. He's yet to have experienced basically anything the joys of life had to offer.
"Look at you." Alex continued, gesturing to Brontes' sleek black and blue scales and the faint crackle of lightning that danced across his body every now and then.
"Forget the fact that you're a Divine beast… Just the fact that you're a beast would have them shooting on sight. They're going to assume you… no, that both of us aren't here with good intentions. After all, there's no such thing as a beast on the human's side as far as the natives here are concerned…" Alex grew more and more stressed the more he thought about it
Normally, when beasts were born the first thing that comes to mind for them is the voice of the System compelling them to attack any and every living thing they encounter. It is only in rare cases such as an awakened with a Taming talent, or a lucky encounter like Alex's – finding a beast just born and having them imprint on them – that beasts can be tamed and excluded from this 'order' of sorts from the System to attack everything and anything.
Despite the city's size, Alex suspected that because of their isolatedness, they didn't get many visitors who fell into those two scenarios.
This was the conundrum he was left with.
