Chapter 74: Chapter 75: Recognition
"I think I may have spent all the money I had, so I came back," Violet said, rubbing her chin thoughtfully as if she were analyzing Misty's every move. Despite her playful tone, her eyes showed genuine concern for her younger sister.
"Oh my, did you run out of money so soon?" Lily teased as she walked toward Misty. "It looks like your big sister needs to give you a bit more, doesn't it?" She reached into her pocket, pretending to offer Misty some money.
Though their words were playful, the love and care the two older sisters felt for Misty were evident. Misty was the youngest, and they couldn't help but worry about her well-being.
"That's not it!" Misty snapped, her face showing clear annoyance. She lowered her voice and muttered, "This is exactly why I didn't want to come back here..."
Before the sisters could respond, a sudden voice interrupted the moment.
"Three beautiful big sisters..."
Brock appeared dramatically, kneeling before the sisters with one hand over his chest and the other extended theatrically. "Would you do me the honor of sharing lunch with me?"
"Uh..." Sakura, Violet, and Lily exchanged confused glances. They couldn't understand why this overly dramatic boy, who had arrived with Misty, was behaving so oddly.
"Misty, step outside for a moment," Sakura said with a teasing tone, though her expression held a hint of worry. "Do you know this strange guy?"
"What do you mean strange? He's the former Pewter City Gym Leader!" Misty replied, embarrassed by Brock's antics but still defending him.
"What?!" The three sisters were stunned. They couldn't believe this peculiar boy was once a Gym Leader like them.
"He's also widely praised," Misty added, "as someone 'as strong as a rock.'"
Brock, hearing this, straightened up and smiled confidently. "Indeed, I used to run the Pewter Gym, but I've handed it over to my younger brother. Now, I'm traveling to learn more about the world. My dream is to—"
"Okay, okay, we get it! No one asked for your life story," Ash interrupted, grabbing Brock and pulling him back before his embarrassing behavior could escalate further.
Misty, already flustered, covered her face with her hands. Her sisters laughed but could see how much Misty cared about her traveling companions.
Meeting Ash
"This is the challenger, right?" Sakura asked, looking past Brock and focusing on Ash. She observed him closely, noting his confident posture and composed demeanor.
"That's me," Ash replied politely. "It's an honor to meet Misty's sisters. My name is Ash Ketchum from Pallet Town. I'm traveling with Misty and Brock, and I'm challenging the Kanto League."
Sakura's eyes lit up with approval. "He seems steady," she thought. "More reliable than that Brock character."
Lily leaned in, studying Ash more closely. Though he wasn't particularly striking at first glance, there was something undeniably charming about him.
With a playful smirk, Lily asked, "So, are you Misty's boyfriend?"
Misty's face turned crimson. "What?! Don't be ridiculous!" she shouted, waving her hands in denial.
But Ash, calm as ever, responded thoughtfully, "Not yet. I do have feelings for Misty, but I think we're too young to pursue something serious right now."
Misty's blush deepened as she looked away, her heart racing at Ash's unexpected honesty.
Lily blinked in surprise. She had only been teasing, but Ash's straightforwardness impressed her. "He's honest and mature for his age," she thought.
Sakura and Violet exchanged glances, their expressions softening. They could see why Misty felt comfortable traveling with Ash.
Preparing for Battle
"Alright, alright!" Sakura clapped her hands, breaking the moment. "We'll save the personal talk for later. Right now, it's time for the Gym Challenge."
Everyone nodded, realizing they had gotten sidetracked.
"We won't hold back, even if you're Misty's friend," Sakura declared, stepping forward with her sisters.
Misty sighed, shaking her head. "You should worry about yourselves. Ash isn't someone you can beat easily."
"Oh? Already standing up for your 'little boyfriend,' are you?" Lily teased, making Misty's face flush once more.
Ash wisely stayed silent, knowing better than to get involved.
The participants moved to their positions. The referee stepped forward to explain the rules.
"The Gym Challenge will now commence between the challenger Ash and the Cerulean Gym Leaders. Each side may use two Pokémon. The challenger is allowed to switch Pokémon during the battle. The match ends when one side loses both Pokémon."
The referee signaled the Gym Leaders to release their first Pokémon.
Sakura smirked as she held up a Poké Ball. "If you want us to trust you with Misty, you'll have to prove yourself. Show us your strength!"
"I won't lose," Ash replied confidently. His words carried a double meaning, making Misty's heart flutter once more.
Brock, standing on the sidelines, watched Ash with admiration. "He's good," Brock muttered. "I should learn a thing or two from him."
Sakura tossed her Poké Ball into the air. "Seaking, let's go!"
The water-type Pokémon emerged with a splash, ready for battle.
Ash's eyes gleamed as he reached for his Poké Ball. "Alright, let's do this!"
