Chapter 72: Chapter 73: Flowers on the Water
The Cerulean Gym had just opened its doors to a bustling crowd, and tourists flooded the arena. Inside the battle hall, spectators took their designated seats, buzzing with anticipation for the upcoming water ballet performance.
Backstage, in the gym's preparation area, three elegant women stood together, their expressions clouded with worry.
"The proceeds from today's performance might be enough to sustain the gym for another week," said Sakura, the eldest sister, her blonde hair flowing behind her.
Violet, the blue-haired middle sister, sighed in response, her face showing signs of fatigue.
"I wonder how Misty is doing," said Lily, the youngest sister, with soft pink hair cascading over her shoulders. Her tone was a mix of concern and longing.
The three sisters, famously known as the "Flowers on the Water" of Cerulean City, were not only renowned for their beauty but also notorious for their struggles in maintaining the gym's reputation.
Sakura broke the silence. "Misty should be fine. Didn't the League send us a commendation saying she repelled Team Rocket?" Her voice carried a hint of pride, a rare emotion in their usual somber conversations.
"Misty is different from us," Violet admitted with a faint smile. "She's got the talent and drive to be an amazing Trainer, something we…" Her words trailed off, laden with a sense of inadequacy.
"But that's why we must keep going," Lily interjected, her tone resolute. "We have to hold on until Misty returns and makes the Cerulean Gym what it was always meant to be!"
"You're right," Sakura said, her expression firming with determination. "Now, let's put on a great show for the audience. If nothing else, we owe them that much."
With renewed resolve, the sisters headed to the stage. As the announcer introduced them, cheers erupted from the crowd. The three women gracefully climbed onto the diving platform, bowing to the audience on both sides.
"The Flowers of Cerulean City!" the announcer proclaimed.
Despite the gym's tainted reputation in the Pokémon battle circuit, the sisters' mastery of water ballet was undeniable. Their synchronized movements and graceful dives captivated spectators. Even those who had initially come to mock the gym found themselves returning for these mesmerizing performances.
The sisters leaped elegantly into the water, their forms creating minimal splashes. Pokémon such as Goldeen, Seaking, and Dewgong joined the display, adding an enchanting flair to the performance.
In the stands, Ash, Misty, and Brock watched in awe. Ash, known for his bluntness, admitted, "I've got to hand it to them. This level of skill would stand out even in an international competition."
Misty, sitting beside him, was transfixed. It was the first time she had truly watched her sisters perform. Their dedication and talent were undeniable, and Misty felt a pang of guilt for having dismissed their efforts as frivolous in the past.
Around them, the audience murmured.
"Why do they stick to running the gym?" one spectator asked aloud. "With talent like that, they could easily compete on the world stage."
"They should give up on the Cerulean Gym and pursue water ballet full-time," another chimed in.
Hearing these remarks, Misty clenched her fists. While part of her agreed with the sentiment, she also felt her sisters deserved better than the ridicule they faced for their efforts to maintain the gym.
The performance concluded with a thunderous applause. Sakura, Violet, and Lily emerged from the pool, bowing once more to thank their audience.
"We hope to see you again next week for another magical performance!" Sakura announced with her usual poise.
The crowd responded enthusiastically, promising to return. However, amidst the applause, some voices of derision still lingered.
"Such a waste of talent on a failing gym," someone muttered.
Misty's heart sank at the criticism, but her sisters remained composed, smiling graciously as they exited the stage.
"Why do they endure this?" Misty whispered, her voice barely audible over the chatter around her.
Ash placed a hand on her shoulder. "They're fighting their own battle, Misty. Just like you are."
Meanwhile, Brock, seated on Ash's other side, was starstruck. "They're not just talented," he mused. "They're strong, beautiful, and committed. Sakura would make an ideal partner…"
Ash rolled his eyes at Brock's predictable antics, while Misty shot him a sharp look. "You're impossible," she muttered, though a small smile tugged at her lips.
The sisters' performance may not have erased the gym's infamy, but it had once again proven their dedication to preserving its legacy. Misty silently vowed to honor that legacy, no matter the challenges ahead.
