Pokémon: The truth behind the power

Chapter 35: Chapter 33: Quarterfinals: James vs. Kaito

The battle at Stadium 2A in the Indigo Plateau was about to begin. The crowd, a sea of expectant and excited faces, buzzed with the energy of the moment. The lights shone brightly, reflecting in the eyes of the spectators who eagerly awaited the clash between James and Kaito. The referee, with his resonant voice, had introduced both trainers, and now the air was charged with tension.

James, with his short blue hair and serene green gaze, prepared to release his Pokémon. His heart raced, but he remained calm; he knew that the battle was not just a test of skills but also a reflection of his connection with his Pokémon. With a determined motion, he threw the Poké Ball into the air.

"Exeggutor, let's go!" he shouted as the sphere opened, releasing his partner in a flash of light.

Exeggutor appeared on the field, its large eyes expressing confidence. With the Chlorophyll ability, it was ready to take advantage of any weather conditions. The tropical plant stood tall, its green leaves waving gently as if greeting the audience.

Kaito, on the other hand, was not to be outdone. With a challenging smile and a spark of contained anger in his red eyes, he threw his own Poké Ball onto the field.

"Banette, come out!" Kaito exclaimed.

Banette emerged from the sphere with an eerie presence, its bright eyes reflecting the intensity of the impending battle. The atmosphere grew tense; both Pokémon stared at each other as if they could sense the rivalry between their trainers.

The referee raised his arm and signaled.

"Begin!"

James took the initiative. His voice rang out with determination.

"Exeggutor, use Sunny Day!"

With an elegant movement, Exeggutor lifted its leaves toward the sky and began to gather energy. A golden glow filled the field as the sun shone brightly above them. The temperature rose and Exeggutor's speed doubled thanks to its ability. The crowd erupted in cheers; they knew James had a plan.

Kaito frowned as he saw James' strategy unfold.

"I won't let that happen!" he shouted while commanding, "Banette, use Will-O-Wisp!"

Banette moved swiftly, launching a bluish flame toward Exeggutor. The dancing fire flew through the air with the intent to burn its target.

James reacted quickly.

"Exeggutor, dodge and counterattack with Leaf Storm!"

Exeggutor leaned to one side just in time to avoid Banette's attack. Then it gathered energy in its leaves and unleashed a storm of sharp leaves that spiraled like a whirlwind toward Banette. The attack hit hard and sent Banette reeling backward.

The crowd roared at James' swift and decisive action. However, Kaito was not intimidated.

"Banette! Use Phantom Force!" he commanded firmly.

Banette vanished in an instant and reappeared behind Exeggutor, ready to strike by surprise. The strategy was clever; Kaito knew he had to seize every opportunity to destabilize James.

"Watch out!" James shouted upon realizing Banette's stealthy movement. "Use Psychic!"

Exeggutor reacted instantly; a psychic wave emanated from it toward Banette just as it was about to attack. The impact was monumental: Banette was thrown backward by the force of the psychic attack.

Kaito gritted his teeth in frustration; he could feel his contained anger bubbling inside him as he watched James dominate the field. He couldn't allow that to continue.

"Banette! Recover and use Sucker Punch!" Kaito shouted determinedly.

Banette quickly got back up and charged at Exeggutor with surprising speed. It was an unexpected attack that could change the course of the battle.

James saw the attack coming and knew he had to act fast.

"Exeggutor! Use Synthesis!"

Exeggutor absorbed sunlight and began healing its wounds while Banette attacked it. The impact was strong, but Exeggutor managed to regain some energy just in time to withstand the blow.

The battle remained intense; both trainers were pushing their Pokémon to their limits. The crowd was on the edge of their seats, enjoying every moment of the fierce combat.

Kaito felt frustration growing inside him; he couldn't let James surpass him like this without a fight. With a determined look filled with contained rage, he shouted:

"This isn't over! Banette! Use Shadow Claw!"

Banette rushed toward Exeggutor with dark claws ominously shining in its hands. James knew he had to do something bold to counter this final offensive.

"Exeggutor! Solar Beam!"

Bright energy began to accumulate in Exeggutor's leaves as Banette drew closer. In a decisive moment, Exeggutor released a beam of pure light toward Banette just as it launched its attack.

The resulting explosion lit up the entire stadium; spectators were stunned by the magnitude of the clash between both moves. When the dust settled, Banette fell to the ground weakened while Exeggutor stood firm but exhausted.

The referee quickly approached to assess both Pokémon.

"Banette cannot continue! The round is won by James Morgan!"

The crowd erupted in cheers as James smiled with satisfaction. Kaito looked at his fallen Pokémon with a mix of frustration and contained anger; he knew he had to release his next Pokémon if he wanted any chance in this battle.

With a firm but tense voice, Kaito said:

"It's time to unleash my next Pokémon…" Kaito said, his voice resonating with a mix of challenge and determination. The crowd held its breath in anticipation of what move this young trainer with jet-black hair would make next. With a decisive gesture, he threw his Poké Ball into the air.

"Houndoom, come out!" he exclaimed, and in a flash of dark light, the fire- and dark-type Pokémon appeared on the field. Houndoom stood tall with an imposing posture, its sharp horns gleaming under the stadium lights. The dark energy emanating from it was palpable as its intense gaze focused on Exeggutor.

James felt a pang of unease upon seeing Houndoom. He knew that Kaito's type combination—fire and dark—was particularly effective against his Exeggutor, which was both grass and psychic-type. However, he wasn't going to let that discourage him.

"Exeggutor, hold your ground," James ordered while trying to project confidence as his mind worked on what strategy to follow next.

Kaito smirked disdainfully at James' reaction. There was something about his serene attitude that irritated him; that unflappable calm seemed to mock his own frustration. With a swift motion, Kaito gave his first command.

"Houndoom! Nasty Plot!"

Houndoom concentrated, raising its head toward the sky while absorbing dark energy. A sinister aura surrounded it as its special power increased. The crowd erupted in murmurs; they knew Kaito was preparing for a devastating attack.

"I won't let you do that," James responded quickly. "Exeggutor, use Energy Ball!"

Exeggutor's leaves began spinning rapidly as it launched a sphere of plant energy toward Houndoom. The attack flew through the air with speed and precision.

Kaito remained unfazed.

"Houndoom! Dodge and use Dark Pulse!"

Houndoom agilely moved aside to avoid the energy sphere. Then, with fluid motion, it launched a dark pulse toward Exeggutor. The wave collided with the grass-type Pokémon who staggered from the force of impact.

The crowd roared as they felt tension in the air rise again. James knew he had to act fast to regain an advantage.

"Exeggutor! Use Solar Beam!"

Energy began accumulating once more in Exeggutor's leaves under Sunny Day's bright sun; it was ready for another powerful attack.

Kaito frowned upon seeing James prepare another strong move.

"Houndoom! Use Inferno!"

With a fierce cry, Houndoom unleashed a blazing inferno directly aimed at Exeggutor. Fire illuminated the field as both attacks raced toward each other.

The clash was explosive; Houndoom's fiery blast struck hard against Solar Beam's ray of light creating a cloud of smoke that temporarily covered the battlefield. Spectators were on edge waiting anxiously to see who would emerge unscathed from this encounter.

When smoke cleared both Pokémon were visible but clearly affected by their brutal exchange. Exeggutor seemed slightly unsteady while Houndoom showed signs of exhaustion after using such a powerful attack.

James seized this opportunity to change his tactics.

"Exeggutor! Use Giga Drain!"

The leaves on Exeggutor began glowing again as it absorbed energy from the ground and shot out a green beam toward Houndoom. This attack would not only damage its opponent but also allow it to recover some health back for itself.

Kaito watched as James' strategy took shape feeling contained anger bubbling inside him once more; he couldn't let this happen again—he needed action fast!

"Houndoom! Use Foul Play!"

Houndoom charged at Exeggutor with surprising speed attacking with dark force that used its opponent's own stats against it. The impact was brutal; Exeggutor was hit so hard that it fell down onto the ground!

The crowd screamed collectively; their cheers echoed off stadium walls filled with emotion and tension rising high above them all around them too! James felt despair beginning take hold seeing how quickly things turned against him watching helplessly while calling out:

"Exeggutor! Get up!" —James shouted fervently extending his hand towards his fallen Pokémon—

But Kaito wasn't going to give him any respite either! With eyes locked onto James' face ordering:

"Houndoom! Shadow Ball!"

A dark orb formed before Houndoom before being launched swiftly towards Exeggutor who could no longer withstand such punishment anymore!

With one last groan Exeggutor fell defeated onto ground beneath them both!

The referee rushed over quickly assessing situation closely now stating:

"Exeggutor cannot continue! Round is won by Kaito!"

The crowd erupted in cheers as Kaito smiled triumphantly. However, there was something deeper in that smile; an ambiguous mix of satisfaction and contained anger that seemed ready to surface. James watched from the other side of the field, feeling the pressure mounting on his shoulders.

The referee, with his resonant and authoritative voice, addressed James.

"Trainer James Morgan!" he announced. "It's time for you to release your next Pokémon."

With determination in his green eyes, James nodded and threw his Poké Ball into the air.

"Hitmonlee, go!" he shouted, and in a flash of light, the master of kicks made his grand entrance. Hitmonlee appeared on the field, its elastic and muscular legs ready for action. With a firm and determined stance, it looked confidently at Houndoom.

The crowd erupted in cheers, excited by the appearance of the fighting-type Pokémon. James knew that Hitmonlee was a formidable contender, capable of delivering devastating kicks from any position. The energy in the stadium was palpable; everyone eagerly awaited the outcome of this intense battle.

Meanwhile, the scene shifted to an elegant room adorned with sophisticated decorations. Five sofas were tastefully arranged around a large screen projecting the battle between James and Kaito. In the central sofa sat Pryce, an elderly man with white hair and brown eyes that reflected deep wisdom. He wore a long dark blue coat that gave him an air of authority.

Next to him was Agatha, an older woman with her blonde hair tied up in a bun. Her purple dress highlighted her elegance as she watched the screen with an intrigued expression. Blaine, bald yet lively, settled into another sofa wearing a vibrant orange shirt and a green necklace that contrasted with his outfit. Adán, the Elite Four member of Normal type, wore his dark blue robe and fitted white shirt, slowly stroking his brown beard while Gawain, of Steel type, sat upright in his shining armor with long silver hair cascading down in soft waves to his shoulders, giving him an almost ethereal presence.

The conversation began with Blaine breaking the ice.

"I must say that Lance and James are true titans in this tournament," Blaine commented, smiling as he observed the projection. "The strength and will they have shown are admirable. I can't forget how Noland fell to James in the round of sixteen; it was an impressive fight."

Agatha nodded slightly before interjecting.

"And let's not forget Karen," she said with a biting tone. "She's very good at what she does. Although…" her gaze shifted toward Pryce, "I'm not sure if that's enough to beat the best."

Pryce maintained his cold and impassive expression at the comment, but a slight reaction passed through his brown eyes that no one noticed.

Adán leaned forward, intrigued.

"Karen almost lost to that kid Hiro," he remarked. "I think she has potential, but I always feel like she's missing something. Aren't you going to mention Kaito? He's from Lavender Town; don't you think about recruiting him as an apprentice?"

Agatha looked at him curiously.

"That kid is good," she replied, "but he needs to overcome some things in his heart before I can consider making him my apprentice. There are shadows within him that he hasn't faced yet."

Pryce observed his companions silently for a few seconds before speaking up.

"Lorelei has potential," he mentioned briefly.

Gawain raised an eyebrow upon hearing the young woman's name.

"I didn't expect your niece to participate," he said in surprise. "Have you been training her?"

But noticing Pryce's stern look, Gawain decided to remain silent and let the topic drop. The conversation took a turn when Agatha shifted the dialogue's direction.

"Are you sure about giving up your champion title?" she asked with malicious curiosity.

Pryce sighed heavily before responding.

"Yes," he finally said. "I've been in this position for too long without achieving anything significant."

His words hung in the air like an unsettling echo; the ambiguity of his statement left others intrigued about what he really meant.

Gawain tried to ease the tension.

"You've done so much for Indigo," he asserted. "Your legacy will endure even after you leave."

Pryce looked at him dryly.

"If I truly wanted to help Indigo…"—his tone hinted at hidden thoughts he didn't fully share.

The conversation grew more serious when Pryce suddenly stood up, placing a light blue hat on his head as he prepared to leave.

"The Indigo Council has asked me to carry out one last mission before my retirement," he announced firmly.

Adán looked at him curiously.

"What do you have to do?" he asked quickly.

Agatha also chimed in, interested in the answer.

"Did they ask you to deal with Team Rocket? They've appeared recently… Should we go after them too?" Her tone was sarcastic—"After all, they only bother those prominent families; maybe we should let them handle it themselves."

Pryce shook his head as he headed toward the door.

"It's not about Team Rocket," he replied disdainfully. "We've obtained information about several main bases of the Pokémon Hunter Organization; those locations were quite unexpected. I need three of you to go to some of those bases to take down that organization quickly."

Gawain immediately volunteered himself.

"I'll go," he said determinedly. "I have no problem facing them if necessary."

Pryce looked at him with slight displeasure before responding:

"It's better if you stay here at Indigo Plateau to ensure everything goes smoothly; probably Agatha, Adán, Blaine, and I will be busy until the finals."

Gawain misinterpreted the rejection as trust and accepted without hesitation.

Adán frowned upon hearing this and couldn't help but complain:

"For once I'm interested in this event… The councilors are good for something! They always try to prevent us from facing them; almost as if they want to protect those hunters or something." He grabbed his coat to leave as well, visibly frustrated by the situation.

Agatha followed him silently while Pryce remained there watching how his companions left the room. The tension in the air was palpable; important decisions lay ahead and each one knew their paths were about to diverge once again into the unknown.
