The first trainer to block Sato's path on the street was a boy about seven or eight years old.
His skin was tanned, and he was wearing only a pair of camouflage swim trunks, with swim goggles and a bathing cap on his head.
He carried a Wingull-themed inflatable swim ring, making him the quintessential "Swimmer Boy."
Trailing behind him were three other kids around the same age, dressed similarly. They seemed like a group of friends heading to the beach for a swim.
"Big brother, you must be from another region, right? Your Growlithe looks so strong! Can you battle us with your Pokémon? If one of us wins, will you let your Growlithe play with us?"
The Swimmer Boy, AJ, looked at Growlithe with envy. He wanted to pet it but didn't dare to, so he eagerly asked Sato instead.
Indeed, it wasn't Sato himself that attracted attention, but his Growlithe.
Having been raised exceptionally well, this Growlithe was not only larger than average but also had a sleek and shiny coat. Its strikingly handsome and fluffy appearance naturally turned heads wherever it went.
"Just when I was looking for an opportunity to battle, it drops right into my lap."
Seeing their outfits, Sato couldn't help but smile.
These Swimmer Boys had come at the perfect time—his Pokémon could use some practice against these "experience bags."
"Alright, let's have a Pokémon battle," Sato agreed, nodding with a kind smile.
The Swimmer Boys were thrilled at his agreement. They eagerly led Sato to a nearby clearing marked with a basic Pokémon battle arena.
Noticing the commotion, passersby started gathering. Some, intrigued by the prospect of an early-morning Pokémon battle, stopped to watch.
Before long, a decent crowd had assembled around the battlefield.
"I'll go first! Big brother, you'd better be careful. I'm famous in Lilycove City for my skills! Come on out, Corphish!"
Excited by the crowd of spectators, AJ's eyes sparkled as he decided to take the lead. Determined to put on a good show, he enthusiastically challenged Sato.
In the next moment, a white light shot out from AJ's PokéBall, revealing a fierce-looking Corphish.
"Interesting. A Corphish with the Adaptability ability, at level 23, and it even knows Swords Dance. Looks like AJ isn't just your average hobbyist trainer," Sato thought, narrowing his eyes as he activated his system's detection ability to gather details about the opponent's Pokémon.
He glanced at AJ with a bit of surprise.
Pokemon Information:
Pokemon: Corphish
Level: 23
Type: Water
Ability: Adaptability (Hidden Ability)
Gender: Male
Known Moves: Bubble, Vice Grip, Harden, Leer, Bubble Beam, Protect, Double Hit, Knock Off, Aqua Jet (Egg Move), Water Pulse (Tutor), Razor Shell (Tutor), Swords Dance (TM), Brick Break (TM), Scald (TM)
Sato's mind began calculating as he analyzed the opponent's capabilities. It was clear this wouldn't be an ordinary battle.
"Let's do this, Nidoran! Get ready for battle!"
Though slightly impressed by AJ's capabilities, Sato had no intention of overwhelming him by using Golbat or Bellossom.
Instead, he sent out his Nidoran, whose level was similar to that of Corphish, to ensure a fair fight.
At the command of a Swimmer Boy acting as the referee, the battle between Sato and AJ officially began.
At that moment, a blonde woman with a striking figure, wearing a white shirt over a swimsuit, arrived at the edge of the battlefield.
She was accompanied by several children about the same age as AJ and his friends.
The woman's fiery appearance caught the attention of some male spectators, but upon recognizing her identity and the icy glint in her eyes, they quickly averted their gazes and kept a safe distance.
"Well, well, you little brats! Skipping your scheduled time and battling Pokémon here instead? Just wait till I deal with you later!"
With her arms crossed, the blonde woman glared at the four Swimmer Boys on one side of the battlefield, her pretty face clouded with annoyance.
However, she refrained from interrupting the match and quietly observed with the children accompanying her.
"Corphish, start with Aqua Jet! Take the lead!" shouted AJ as soon as the battle commenced.
In a flash, Corphish's eyes glinted fiercely, and its body was enveloped in water. Propelled by a powerful surge, it shot toward Nidoran like a torpedo.
From the moment it entered the field, Nidoran had kept its eyes locked on Corphish.
As Corphish moved, Nidoran's ears perked up, and sparks flickered from the horn on its forehead. When Corphish closed within five meters, a bolt of electricity surged from Nidoran's horn in an attempt to intercept.
To Sato and Nidoran's surprise, Corphish reacted with incredible agility. By shifting the direction of its water propulsion mid-air, it executed a sharp turn, skillfully evading the Thunderbolt.
"Use Confusion to redirect the lightning!"
Sato's sharp reflexes allowed him to immediately issue a new command upon witnessing Corphish's impressive maneuver.
The surprise in Nidoran's eyes quickly gave way to focus. A blue glow emanated from its eyes, and the stray Thunderbolt became enveloped in psychic energy.
Due to Corphish's abrupt change in trajectory, its attack had veered slightly off-course, now far from Nidoran. However, its water propulsion continued to leave a long trail behind it.
With Nidoran's psychic control, the redirected Thunderbolt made an abrupt turn and struck the water trail behind Corphish.
Water conducts electricity. In the next instant, Corphish found itself caught in the electric current, its body convulsing as it was zapped.
Yet, Corphish's fierce gaze only grew sharper under the electric assault.
With a determined cry, it opened its pincers and unleashed a barrage of Bubble Beam, the bubbles crackling with residual electricity as they flew toward Nidoran.
Still recovering from the mental effort of redirecting Thunderbolt, Nidoran couldn't evade in time and was struck head-on by the electrified Bubble Beam.
As the blue bubbles made contact, they detonated in a series of small explosions, sending Nidoran flying backward.
"A Nidoran that can use Confusion—how rare. And AJ's Corphish is as ruthless as ever, not just to others but to itself too," the blonde woman mused, her expression intrigued.
Resting her chin on her hand, she watched the battlefield, now obscured by thick black smoke from the explosions.
When the smoke cleared, both Nidoran and Corphish reappeared, neither having fallen. The two Pokémon were locked in close combat.
Nidoran's horn glowed with a brilliant purple light and extended several times its usual length.
Meanwhile, Corphish held one claw in front of itself, shining with a metallic gleam, while its other claw, encased in swirling water, clashed fiercely against Nidoran's glowing horn.
The battlefield turned into a melee as Nidoran fought like a warrior wielding a spear, launching relentless thrusts, while Corphish countered like a knight with a shield and sword.
The two Pokémon exchanged furious blows in a dazzling display of skill and determination.
