While Pidgeotto directed its white whirlwind toward Nidoran, Sato gave his own command:

"Poison Sting."

In an instant, Nidoran darted through the grass like a rabbit, evading the whirlwind. At the same time, the small purple spikes on its back began to glow with a ghostly purple light.

A barrage of fine, purple poisonous needles shot out like machine-gun bullets, arcing through the air.

Though most of the needles failed to hit their mark, their sheer quantity created a dense rain of arrows that made it nearly impossible for Pidgeotto to maneuver freely within the area.

"Hmph, use Gust to blow those needles away, then go for Brave Bird!"

Realizing that his probing attacks were ineffective and noting that Nidoran's level was lower than Pidgeotto's, Taro Otoya quickly adjusted his strategy.

He ordered Pidgeotto to engage in a full-force offensive to end the battle swiftly, denying Sato the chance to whittle down Pidgeotto's stamina.

"Coo!"

Pidgeotto, naturally more aggressive in temperament, let out an excited cry upon hearing its Trainer's direct attack command.

It flapped its wings powerfully, dispersing the incoming Poison Stings with a fierce gust.

Then, its body was enveloped in a radiant blue light as it dove at astonishing speed toward Nidoran, aiming to strike with all its might.

As it descended, Pidgeotto's momentum grew. Encased in the glowing blue energy, it resembled a divine bird cloaked in flames, ready to unleash its fury.

"Alright, use Double Kick combined with Poison Jab. Give it everything you've got!"

Taro Otoya's decision to abandon Pidgeotto's aerial advantage in favor of a direct attack made Sato's eyes light up.

He had been wary of a hit-and-run "kite" strategy that Flying-types often favored. A head-on clash was exactly what he preferred.

He immediately instructed Nidoran to counter with its best moves.

Faced with the blue firebird rushing at it from above, Nidoran's eyes gleamed with eagerness. Its sturdy hind legs, already glowing white, kicked off the ground with immense force, propelling its body upward like a purple arrow.

At the same time, the sharp horn on Nidoran's forehead shone with an intense purple light. Following Sato's command, it executed its most powerful move, Poison Jab, aiming for a direct hit.

The next moment, under the watchful eyes of an exhilarated crowd, Pidgeotto's Brave Bird collided head-on with Nidoran's Poison Jab.

A loud "BOOM" echoed through the battlefield as the clash generated a burst of energy, enveloping the area in thick smoke. Amid the explosion, some sharp-eared spectators caught the sound of something crashing to the ground, followed by a series of rustling noises.

In terms of base power, Brave Bird (120) far outclassed Poison Jab (80).

However, thanks to Nidoran's Hustle ability, which boosted its physical moves, the power of Poison Jab was also elevated to 120. Combined with the STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) that both moves benefited from, their strengths were evenly matched.

Unfortunately, Pidgeotto's higher level (22 compared to Nidoran's 17) gave it a clear advantage in physical attributes.

Despite the fierce struggle, Nidoran ultimately couldn't hold its ground. It was struck heavily by Pidgeotto, sent tumbling across the grassy battlefield before coming to a stop.

The intense head-on clash left Nidoran severely injured. Were it not for its rolling momentum softening some of the impact, it might have already lost its ability to battle entirely.

In the previous head-on collision, Pidgeotto didn't come out unscathed either. It had taken the full brunt of Nidoran's Poison Jab, a move with a power level of 120, and also suffered recoil damage from using Brave Bird.

Now, while Pidgeotto was in better condition than Nidoran, it wasn't by much. The bird hovered low to the ground, its body marked with visible wounds.

"This Nidoran isn't ordinary," Anna thought, as she reviewed the photos she had taken with her rapid-fire camera.

She had captured the intense clash between Nidoran and Pidgeotto in vivid detail.

"To think that a move like Poison Jab, slightly weaker in base power, could nearly equal Pidgeotto's Brave Bird. If Nidoran's level were the same as Pidgeotto's, it would have been Pidgeotto losing that exchange."

"But why? Why is its move so strong? Could it be Sato's unique training methods?"

Unfortunately for Anna, the concept of hidden abilities was advanced knowledge, known only to elite Pokémon researchers. Despite being a prodigy, Anna was far from the top minds in the academic Pokémon world.

Having abandoned her research in the field, Anna couldn't figure out why Nidoran's Poison Jab had such power, no matter how much she mulled over it.

Her inability to control or predict Sato's actions frustrated her greatly, and she started to feel as though the "prey" she had been tracking was slipping out of her grasp.

On the other side of the battlefield, Taro Otoya was just as baffled by the surprising strength of Nidoran's Poison Jab. His face had darkened considerably.

As Pidgeotto's Trainer, he fully understood the outcome of their clash. In truth, Pidgeotto hadn't come out on top—it might have even been at a disadvantage.

"Pidgeotto, use Brave Bird again!"

But in the fast-paced rhythm of the battle, Tar didn't have the luxury of overthinking. He immediately commanded Pidgeotto to launch another aggressive attack, aiming to deny the heavily injured Nidoran any chance to recover.

Having tasted victory in their last exchange, Pidgeotto's fighting spirit burned even brighter.

At Taro's command, it let out a fierce cry and once again transformed into a glowing blue firebird, diving straight for the struggling Nidoran, who was just starting to rise to its feet.

"Now, Thunderbolt!"

Sato, who had been closely watching the battle's progression, seized the opportunity. Though he had initially lost hope for this match, the moment Taro commanded another direct attack, he realized that Nidoran still had a chance to turn things around.

As soon as Pidgeotto came within five meters of Nidoran, Sato issued the decisive order.

The moment Sato's voice fell, the battered Nidoran, barely managing to stand, suddenly revealed its trump card. Its horn, already glowing faintly, erupted with a brilliant yellow light.

A golden bolt of electricity, as thick as two fingers, surged out from Nidoran's horn, streaking directly toward the incoming Pidgeotto.

Electric moves are incredibly fast, and Pidgeotto's direct charge made it impossible to evade.

The Thunderbolt struck Pidgeotto squarely, enveloping the bird in crackling golden electricity. It let out a series of pained cries as its entire body convulsed under the intense shock.

Against Pidgeotto, a Flying-type, Thunderbolt was super effective.

After two or three seconds, Nidoran's Thunderbolt subsided. Pidgeotto, now charred and battered, plummeted to the ground, completely unconscious and unable to continue battling.

For a moment, Taro and the spectators around the battlefield were left dumbfounded. Against all odds, Nidoran had pulled off a last-second victory.
