Pokemon: The Gameboy Effect

Chapter 377: The Figth of The Century

The National Pokemon Arena buzzed with anticipation, voices creating a symphony of excitement that echoed throughout the massive stadium. The crowd wasn't just ordinary Pokemon battle enthusiasts, elite trainers, celebrities, and dignitaries from across Draconia had gathered for this historic match.

Among the VIP section sat Riley Lin and Victor Stone, both Elite Four members themselves, alongside Damian and other distinguished guests invited by the Trainer Association. All of Draconia's Elite Four were present, making this one of the most prestigious battles in recent memory.

On the battlefield below, the showdown between rising star John and veteran Elite Four member Damon Drake was about to unfold. Would the record-breaking prodigy claim the scepter of Elite status from his predecessor? Or would the seasoned warrior crush another challenger's dreams, as he had done countless times before?

The atmosphere crackled with the same electric energy that had surrounded John's previous victory against Harisson. But this time, the stakes were infinitely higher. The gap between Gym Leaders and Elite Four members wasn't just a hurdle, it was a towering cliff that only the most exceptional trainers could scale.

If John could achieve victory today, everyone present would witness something truly extraordinary.

At exactly 9:30 AM, both trainers took their positions on opposite sides of the battlefield, sizing each other up with calculating eyes.

John studied his opponent carefully, recalling everything he'd learned about Damon Drake. At forty-three, the man looked remarkably young for his age, well-maintained like a movie star, with good looks and an athletic build that explained his legion of devoted fans. Behind Damon, John could see banners with embarrassingly outdated slogans like "Damon, Damon, I love you, just like mice love chese!"

Definitely has some dedicated old fans, John thought with amusement. The girls who used to support him have clearly grown up.

Damon's assessment of John was simpler but no less impactful: This kid is so damn young.

Twenty years old and already challenging the Elite Four in the National Stadium. When Damon was twenty, he'd been cramming for university exams and getting into petty fights over girls. The comparison stung.

"There's a saying," Damon called out across the battlefield, "'The waves behind push the waves ahead, and the front waves crash upon the shore.'" He tugged at his collar, unbuttoning it slightly as his eyes gleamed with determination. "Even if I wasn't destined to crash today, it might happen in a few years. But..." His voice hardened. "Today, I refuse to be that front wave!"

A piercing whistle cut through the arena's noise, commanding everyone's attention as the referee appeared on his floating platform, megaphone in hand.

"The Elite Challenge begins now!" the referee announced. "Challenger John versus Elite Four member Damon Drake! This will be a four-out-of-six battle, when one trainer's fourth Pokemon loses the ability to fight, the match ends!"

"Trainers, release your first Pokemon!"

Both men reached for their Pokeballs simultaneously, their eyes locked as they hurled them skyward.

Two Pokemon materialized on the battlefield.

In front of Damon stood a Dragonite, but not just any Dragonite. This one was noticeably larger than typical specimens, with a shimmering aura of transparent energy flowing around its orange-yellow form like protective armor. A Totem Pokemon.

John's choice drew gasps from the crowd: a magnificent golden Aggron that gleamed like a mountain of precious metal under the arena lights.

"Another Shiny Pokemon?" someone shouted from the stands.

"How many does this guy have?" another voice called out.

"I'm starting to think John really is the Chosen One!"

While the crowd marveled at the rare golden Aggron, both trainers were already calculating type advantages. John had struck first blood in the tactical battle, Aggron's Steel/Rock typing gave it quadruple resistance to Dragonite's Flying-type moves and double resistance to Dragon-type attacks. Meanwhile, Dragonite's Flying typing left it vulnerable to Rock-type moves.

The referee confirmed both trainers were ready, raising his red and green flags high before slashing them downward.

"Battle begin!"

"Return, Dragonite!"

"Aggron, use Block!"

The commands came simultaneously, but John had anticipated this exact scenario. As Damon raised his Pokeball to recall the disadvantaged Dragonite, the golden mountain that was Aggron stepped directly into the path of the red return beam, its massive body intercepting the light.

The recall failed.

Damon's confident expression flickered for the first time, a tremor of uncertainty passing through his eyes.

'Did he... predict that?'
