Chapter 29: Chapter 29: Dragonite's Training Session
"I don't need money."
Sabrina looked intently at Maki, her expression clearly saying, "I could totally sponsor you."
"Find some time in the next few days to sell those Pokéblocks," Maki said seriously. "Even mid-tier ones would sell well. But we absolutely cannot reveal our connection—at least not yet."
Seeing Sabrina finally drop the idea of sponsoring him, Maki relaxed a bit, pocketing the bank card she had just handed him. He then turned his attention back to Charmander and Dragonite.
The training for Dragon Dance had come to an end for now. This was for two main reasons: first, Charmander was learning the move remarkably fast, mastering several key points in just a short time. Second, Dragon Dance, unlike moves such as Flamethrower or Fire Fang, couldn't be overused in a short period. Overusing it could overwhelm Charmander's body, which was a common challenge when training such moves.
Fortunately, Charmander's progress was astonishing, so much so that even Dragonite was left wide-eyed in amazement.
Before training: I've been with Giovanni for over two decades. What kind of Pokémon haven't I seen? After training: I take it back. I've never seen anything like this.
However, while Charmander's Dragon Dance progressed quickly, he encountered significant difficulties with Flamethrower.
With Dragonite's guidance, the power of Charmander's Ember had noticeably improved, but it was still far from the level of Flamethrower.
Dragonite scratched his head in frustration. Although he could use Flamethrower, he wasn't exactly proficient with it. He had only trained it as a countermeasure against certain Pokémon, such as Ferrothorn. Regardless of proficiency, a single Flamethrower was enough to deal massive damage to such opponents.
But when it came to teaching the move? He had no experience whatsoever. After all, his "biggest child" was still an egg.
Recognizing the difficulty of transitioning from Ember to Flamethrower, Maki suggested, "How about we train a slightly weaker move first, like Flame Burst?"
Flame Burst, as the name suggests, causes fire to spread in all directions upon hitting an opponent, dealing additional damage to surrounding foes. Although it wasn't on the level of a true AOE (Area of Effect) move like Heat Wave, it worked well as a transitional skill.
"Rawr~!"
Dragonite nodded in agreement with Maki's suggestion, though another issue arose—Dragonite didn't know Flame Burst.
Although Dragonite, being a Dragon-type Pokémon, had a vast movepool, Flame Burst simply wasn't among the moves he could learn.
"No problem. That's why I'm here. I am a Trainer, after all!"
Maki glanced at Sabrina, signaling for her to deactivate her psychic hold on him. He was still floating midair—comfortable, but not exactly convenient.
Sabrina, who had been hugging her Pachirisu plush, reluctantly teleported it back to her room to avoid it getting dirty. Afterward, she used a tissue to wipe the corner of Maki's mouth before gently setting him down on the ground with her psychic powers.
Charmander, being young, didn't react to the scene. Dragonite, on the other hand, suddenly felt nostalgic, thinking about the motherly Dragonite back home.
Dragonite pondered further: if Sabrina and Maki ended up together, would their child inherit strong psychic abilities? Even if Maki's psychic talent was lackluster, Sabrina's side should balance it out.
If I bring Giovanni a grandchild with psychic powers, he might reward me handsomely!
If Maki had known what Dragonite was thinking, he would've sent him back to Giovanni and demanded a replacement Pokémon for protection.
Maki had tried to refuse Sabrina when she first approached him, but his body had mysteriously frozen in place. She hadn't even given him a chance to say no.
"Ahem."
Maki awkwardly cleared his throat, his face slightly red, and ignored what had just happened. He walked over to Charmander, who was blissfully unaware of the situation.
As for Dragonite, who was giggling to himself, Maki chose to ignore him entirely.
Maki had been closely observing Charmander's earlier training, so there was no need for a demonstration.
"Charmander, the key difference between Flame Burst and Ember isn't the initial attack itself but the explosion triggered upon impact. Once you achieve that, you'll be able to call it a successful start."
The focus of Flame Burst lay in the "burst" aspect. As long as Charmander could master that, power and precision could be improved with practice.
"When releasing Ember, don't use all your energy at once. Keep a portion of the fire energy within the attack. When it hits the target, let it detonate."
Charmander nodded. However, Maki's advice was purely theoretical; he couldn't demonstrate Flame Burst himself.
In this regard, Maki was quite envious of Sabrina. When her Psychic-type Pokémon struggled with a move, she could simply say, "This is how you use Psychic," and demonstrate it perfectly.
Charmander began following Maki's instructions, but his attempts at Flame Burst kept failing. Either the retained energy was too small to cause an explosion, or it was too much, detonating prematurely and nearly injuring himself.
"Rawr~!"
Dragonite yawned. Watching such training was utterly boring. For him, paying attention to how Maki trained Charmander wasn't nearly as important as planning how to bring Giovanni a psychic grandchild.
However, it was clear that Dragonite's earlier guidance had been effective. While Charmander hadn't yet mastered Flamethrower, his control over his moves had improved significantly.
Finally, after countless attempts, Charmander managed a partial success.
The reason it was "partial" was that the move detonated midair before hitting its target. Still, it was an impressive improvement.
Throughout the process, Charmander sustained some injuries due to the uncontrolled flames, as the fire energy was condensed in his mouth. When the move backfired, he inevitably got hurt.
Despite this, Maki didn't halt the training. He simply treated Charmander's injuries with some potion and resumed the session.
Neither Sabrina nor Dragonite showed any signs of concern. To them, if Charmander couldn't handle such setbacks, there was no point in continuing the training. Talent alone wasn't enough.
The intensity of Dragonite's training under Giovanni had been far harsher than what Charmander was going through now.
Of course, Maki kept a close watch. If the injuries became too severe, he would stop immediately.
Fortunately, Charmander didn't let him down.
