"Bulbasaur, use Leech Seed!"
Sloan called out the command quickly, adjusting his strategy to make the best of his chances, though he knew deep down that his odds of winning were slim.
"Charizard, counter with Flamethrower!"
Tyson observed Sloan's determined effort with a faint smirk. Despite the challenging circumstances, Sloan's Bulbasaur displayed commendable strength. However, the type disadvantage and Charizard's elite-level power left little room for suspense in this battle.
The fiery attack from Charizard incinerated the Leech Seed midair before it could land.
"Bulbasaur, use Petal Blizzard!"
A flurry of petals spiraled out from Bulbasaur, forming a defensive barrier. But the intense heat of Charizard's flames turned the petals into ashes almost instantly, leaving Bulbasaur exposed. The residual fire from Flamethrower hit its mark, dealing substantial damage.
"Charizard, use Heat Wave to suppress it!"
Tyson directed Charizard to hold back its trump cards—like Blast Burn, Dragon Rush, or its top-tier mastery of Flamethrower—choosing instead to rely on Heat Wave. In a single-elimination tournament like this, conserving strength and strategy for later rounds was crucial.
The scorching wave enveloped Bulbasaur, making it struggle to mount a counterattack despite Sloan's desperate encouragement.
"Charizard, finish it with Air Slash followed by Flamethrower!"
"Bulbasaur, try Petal Dance!" Sloan commanded, hoping for a last-ditch effort.
Petal Dance, a powerful continuous attack, began with Bulbasaur summoning a whirlwind of petals. However, the move's casting was sluggish due to Bulbasaur's earlier injuries. Before the attack could fully materialize, Charizard's Air Slash tore through the petals, delivering a decisive blow. Moments later, another Flamethrower engulfed Bulbasaur, leaving it unable to continue.
"Bulbasaur is unable to battle. Charizard wins!" the referee declared.
Tyson recalled Charizard, heading straight to the Pokémon Center for recovery, even though Charizard had taken no damage. Preparation was key for the rounds ahead.
In the afternoon, Tyson's next battle awaited. As he stepped onto the battlefield, his new opponent—a 14-year-old girl—trembled slightly but took her position with resolve.
The match began, and Tyson's Charizard faced off against her Meowth, which was only at an advanced level. Acknowledging the disparity in strength, Tyson adopted a more passive strategy, allowing Charizard to counter rather than attack outright.
"Meowth, use Fury Swipes!" the girl called out, her voice filled with determination.
Charizard easily evaded the attack, responding with a restrained Flamethrower that singed the battlefield but avoided overwhelming Meowth. Tyson aimed to give her a chance to showcase her potential.
Despite her efforts, the gap was too wide. After a few exchanges, Meowth was knocked out. The girl bowed respectfully. "Thank you for the battle," she said earnestly.
"No need to thank me. You did well," Tyson replied with a casual wave before leaving the field.
The first day of eliminations concluded with most elite trainers advancing, as Tyson expected. Silph Corporation's strategic matchups ensured an entertaining spectacle while keeping the strongest participants in the competition. Tyson resolved to approach every match with care—Silph Corporation might throw a curveball to maintain the appearance of fairness.
The next morning, Tyson faced a new challenger, Maeshima, whose Ursaring stood firm at the Advanced level.
"Charizard, take to the skies and use Heat Wave!" Tyson commanded.
Charizard soared effortlessly, unleashing a wave of scorching heat. Ursaring countered with Stone Edge, its sharp rocks slicing through the air. However, Charizard's agility allowed it to dodge most of the attack, maintaining its aerial advantage.
The intense battle continued, but Tyson's meticulous strategy and Charizard's superior power left little doubt about the outcome.
