Chapter 6: The Pokedex

Kay returned home that day and spent all his time with his new companion, Eevee. The little Pokémon was so cute and playful that it quickly became part of the family.

In just a short time, Eevee became like another member of their home, loved by everyone.

Three days later, Kay headed back to the league to collect his Pokédex. During those days, he decided not to train Eevee yet since it had just hatched.

He wanted to wait until he had the Pokédex to understand it better before starting her training.

When Kay entered the facility, he saw the same receptionist again. This time, as soon as the man saw Kay, he hurried inside and quickly returned with the Pokédex in his hand. He gave it to Kay and asked, "Would you like me to explain its features?"

Kay nodded silently, showing that he wanted to listen.

The receptionist began, "On the main page of your Pokédex, you'll see your stage as a trainer, your special ability, and a list of the Pokémon you own. For now, you only have one, but maybe you'll be in the future one of the few trainers that could bond with more."

Kay glanced at the receptionist with a neutral expression before returning his gaze to the Pokédex, signaling him to continue.

The man cleared his throat and continued, "When you open the Pokémon's page, you'll see its potential, stage, and the moves it knows."

He explained further, "The potential of a Pokémon is divided into six ranks: White, Yellow, Orange, Red, Purple, Blue, and Black. The higher the potential, the faster the Pokémon will grow and learn new moves."

Then he added, "Now, about stages, there are six as well: Steel, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond. Between each stage, a Pokémon undergoes a 'breakthrough' where its strength increases significantly. The difference in power between stages is not small, so breakthroughs are important."

Kay listened closely, absorbing all the information even though he knew almost everything from what the receptionist said.

The receptionist continued, "The Pokédex can't be activated by anyone but you. You'll need to do it yourself for security reasons, as your personal data is protected. Even the league can't access what's inside your Pokédex once it's activated."

He then added with a slight smile, "The Pokédex evolves as you grow as a trainer. It may unlock new features, but even we don't know all the ways it can evolve. Since the device is linked to your Pokémon's Power Stone and DNA, it's full of mysteries we still don't understand."

Finally, the receptionist said, "Power Stones and Pokémon still hold many secrets. There's so much more we don't know."

After finishing the short presentation, the receptionist handed Kay the Pokédex. Kay took it, carefully placed it in his pocket, and started his walk back home.

While walking, Kay activated the Pokédex for the first time. On the main page, he saw his name displayed at the top. In the corner of the screen, it showed Stage: Steel, marking his current stage as a trainer.

Below that, in the center of the page, Kay read the name of his ability. His eyes widened in shock when he saw something unexpected; two abilities listed instead of one.

Abilities: Pokémon Master, Egg Collector.

Kay stood still for a moment, stunned. It was extremely rare for anyone to have two abilities. Trainers with two abilities were rarer even than those who could bond with three Pokémon.

At first, Kay was confused by the names of his abilities. Usually, ability names were simple and clear, so a trainer could easily understand what they did.

But "Pokémon Master" and "Egg Collector" didn't give Kay any clue about their effects.

However, he didn't let it bother him too much. Kay knew from his studies that abilities like these often revealed themselves during training or when fighting inside gates.

When an ability is activated, the Pokédex would notify the trainer about its activation and its effect.

Curious, Kay turned to the page for his Eevee. The first thing he checked was her potential which was Orange.

Kay's face lit up with excitement. Orange potential was very good, especially for a Pokémon that came from a lucky egg.

Next, Kay checked Eevee's level and stage. As expected, she was still in the Steel Stage, the first stage of growth.

Then he looked at Eevee's move set: Tackle, Helping Hand, Wish

Seeing this list made Kay even happier. Eevee already knew three moves, which was unusual for a Pokémon that had just hatched.

Even more surprising, one of them was an egg move (Wish). Kay knew that not every Pokémon had the chance to inherit an egg move, making Eevee even more special.

Kay couldn't stop smiling as he walked the rest of the way home. By the time he arrived, he was so happy that he immediately hugged Eevee tightly, feeling grateful and proud of his new companion.

Then Kay put Eevee down and started to plan Eevee's training. He thought carefully about the moves Eevee would need to help him survive and fight inside the gates.

At first, Kay wondered if it could teach Eevee moves that weren't in the games or the series he remembered.

However, after thinking for a while, he decided against it. So far, every detail from the series and games seemed to apply to this world.

So, it was very likely that Eevee wouldn't be able to learn moves outside of its usual list.

After some thought, Kay decided on two moves to train Eevee: Sand Attack and Bite.

Sand Attack would be useful for escaping dangerous situations or evading attacks from stronger Pokémon. It could give Kay a chance to flee if needed.

Bite, on the other hand, was a strong attack move, and even much better than Tackle in terms of power.

Kay created a strict training routine. Every day, Kay and Eevee trained for two hours on Sand Attack, followed by a half-hour break.

Then they trained for another two hours on Bite. After another break, they spent the rest of the day practicing Eevee's other moves.

A week passed, and Eevee successfully learned Sand Attack. Now, Kay focused on Bite even more.

Every morning, they trained on Bite for three full hours before moving on to other moves. Eevee was improving quickly, and Kay could tell it was close to learning Bite.

Despite the progress in Eevee's training, Kay still hadn't figured out what his abilities, Pokémon Master and Egg Collector, actually did.

Even after a week of hard work, there was no clear sign or activation of his abilities. It made him curious but also a little frustrated.

Still, Kay stayed determined, then he said to Eevee, "Once you learn Bite, we'll enter a gate, maybe that's when I'll figure it out."

A week later, Eevee finally mastered Bite, and Kay couldn't wait any longer to enter a gate.

Full of excitement, he began searching for an open gate near his city, hoping to find a team that might need an extra member.

After hours of searching, Kay found a team searching for a team member to attack an F-rank gate near him the next morning. Without wasting time, he packed his bag and told his parents about his plan.

When his mother, Reina, heard about it, she immediately expressed concern. "Kay, it's still too early for you, you've only just bonded with Eevee. What if something goes wrong?"

Kay smiled reassuringly. "Don't worry, Mom. It's just an F-rank gate," he explained.

Gates were classified by rank, ranging from F, the weakest, to S, the most dangerous. F-rank gates were considered beginner-level and relatively safe for new trainers.

Even with Kay's explanation, Reina couldn't help but worry. However, she knew she couldn't stop him. "Be careful," she finally said, her voice full of concern.

Max, Kay's father, stepped in to calm her. "He's a man now, Reina," he said with a proud smile. "F-rank gates aren't dangerous at all. Let him go and gain some experience."
