The Next Day,
Second Day of Playoffs.
As the soft, lazy autumn sun bathed the Kandor competition sports field, Pidgeys stretched their wings, perched on railings, or flew through the air, tilting their heads to observe the battling trainers.
Today was a critical day. If there were too many losses today, the chances of qualifying would dwindle significantly.
Each player would give their all to advance further in the competition.
"Who's your next opponent?" Bin asked curiously, sitting beside Bruce with his arms crossed.
Bruce glanced at the message on his phone and replied, "Jaime Vardy from Leicester University."
"Poor kid." Bin shook his head regretfully upon hearing the name.
At the same time,
In the player lounge of Leicester University,
"It's over—my next opponent is Bruce."
Jaime Vardy stared at the notification on his phone screen. His face turned pale, and the light in his eyes instantly dimmed.
As soon as he spoke, the contestants around him exchanged glances, their expressions ranging from sympathy to regret.
Facing the championship favorite—Jaime's luck was truly remarkable.
The players assigned to Area D were restless, while those from other competition areas secretly felt relieved.
The team coach turned to Jaime, hesitated, and then said after a pause, "It's okay, Jaime. The outcome of the match isn't the most important thing. Just enjoy the process."
Hearing this, Jaime shot a resentful look at his coach.
Enjoy the process...?
Did he mean the process of being annihilated in seconds?
Suddenly, a young man in the corner lowered his glasses and said slowly, "Actually, it's not like you have no chance."
Everyone turned to him, puzzled.
Under their doubtful gazes, the young man appeared calm and said, "Gardevoir is doubly weak to Ghost-types, and it just so happens that your Pokemon is a Ghost-type."
Jaime blinked in surprise, then shook his head. "But my Pokemon is only senior-level."
As a college student, who didn't know about type matchups?
The problem was the gap in power.
A strange glint reflected off the young man's silver frames. He said confidently, "Bruce's Gardevoir is just entering the professional level. Your Pokemon is near that level too. The gap isn't as big as you think. Plus, with the type advantage, it's not impossible to fight."
As a brief silence fell over the room, the young man continued, "If you can find a way to get close and use Thunderbolt, there's a good chance you could defeat Gardevoir."
Looking at the young man's fiery gaze, Jaime hesitated for a moment before stammering, "So... so should I give it a try?"
"Of course! If you win, it's a huge gain. If you lose, you've got nothing to lose."
"Yeah, three people have already gone down anyway."
"Go for it! Give it a shot!"
"Jaime, maybe you'll be the first to defeat Bruce. We're all cheering for you!"
Amid waves of encouragement, Jaime regained his confidence, took a deep breath, and stepped onto the battlefield.
Before long, Jaime stood in the commander's position, facing Bruce from afar.
His friends cheered enthusiastically, and Jaime's eyes grew increasingly determined, his confidence steadily rising.
"I can do this!"
"I'll definitely defeat him!" Jaime secretly pumped himself up.
As both players signaled their readiness, the referee raised his flag and called out, "Please send out your Pokemon!"
At the sound of the referee's voice, both trainers threw their Poke Balls simultaneously.
"Go, Gardevoir!"
As expected, Bruce sent out Gardevoir.
Its noble presence resembled a queen standing atop the clouds, surveying all living beings.
"Go, Shuppet!"
A white light flashed, revealing a gray Pokemon hovering mid-air. It had a sharp horn on its head and large, expressive eyes.
[Pokemon: Shuppet (Ghost)
Ability: Insomnia
Qualification: Master
Level: LV 28 (Senior)]
Oh, finally, a Ghost-type Pokemon.
Bruce's interest was piqued as he observed Shuppet.
Like the Ghost Pokemon themselves, this type was rare and elusive.
To find Ghost Pokemon, it was best to venture to an abandoned house in the wild at midnight or into a dark forest.
Just as an abandoned power plant could be home to Zapdos, an old haunted house often harbored Ghost-types.
Still, Gardevoir was doubly weak to Ghost, so some caution was warranted.
"The match begins!" The referee waved his flag and blew the whistle, officially starting the match.
The trainers' commands rang out simultaneously.
"Shuppet, Shadow Ball!"
"Gardevoir, Teleport."
Shuppet floated in the air, its eyes narrowing as it conjured a pitch-black Shadow Ball, which sped toward Gardevoir.
But Gardevoir's eyes glowed blue, and its figure vanished into thin air.
Boom!
The Shadow Ball struck where Gardevoir had stood, leaving a deep crater and a deafening explosion.
"Shuppet, behind you!" Jaime shouted the next second.
Hearing this, Shuppet turned abruptly, only to see Gardevoir materialize behind it. A tyrannical beam of psychic energy struck it squarely.
Boom!
Thick black smoke rose into the air.
Moments later, Shuppet fell from the sky, landing unconscious on the ground with spirals in its eyes.
Simultaneously, the cheers from Leicester University's supporters abruptly fell silent.
Jaime opened his mouth, retrieved Shuppet as the referee reminded him, and turned to look toward his university's player section.
The young strategist from earlier shrank into his seat, muttering under his breath, "There's always a gap between theory and execution."
On the field,
Bruce looked at Jaime with bright eyes.
"Speaking of which, Gardevoir really should learn Shadow Ball."
Gardevoir was weak to Ghost, but Ghost-types were also weak to each other.
Mastering Shadow Ball would allow Gardevoir to handle Ghost-types more effectively.
After Jaime retrieved Shuppet, he immediately sent out his second Poke Ball, his last hope.
"Please, Froslass."
A beam of red light descended, revealing Froslass floating gracefully in the air.
Froslass had a kimono-like appearance, a head resembling a tilted water droplet, and two ice crystals atop its head.
[Pokemon: Froslass (Ice/Ghost)
Ability: Snow Cloak
Qualification: Master
Level: LV 27 (Senior)]
Froslass—a rare Pokemon as well.
Legend said Froslass was formed when a woman's vengeful soul possessed an icicle in the snowy mountains, living there ever since.
These thoughts passed as the referee's voice rang out again.
"The match begins!"
Jaime shouted tensely, "Icy Wind!"
At his command, Froslass opened its mouth, unleashing a gust of frigid wind. The surrounding temperature plummeted as the cold wind rushed toward Gardevoir.
"Mystical Fire," Bruce said calmly, his expression serene.
Gardevoir danced lightly before spewing a blazing flame from its mouth. The firestorm collided fiercely with the icy wind, instantly melting it into nothingness.
The flame didn't dissipate, roaring toward Froslass like a fiery dragon.
"Double Team!" Jaime shouted urgently.
Suddenly, countless copies of Froslass appeared, filling the battlefield. The flame struck a clone, dispersing both it and the fire.
Bruce, unhurried, snapped his fingers. A cold voice followed: "Dazzling Gleam."
Gardevoir clasped its hands, and an intense white light burst forth like a nuclear explosion, enveloping the entire battlefield.
As the blinding light faded, Jaime squinted, only to see Froslass lying on the ground, battered and unconscious.
"Froslass is unable to battle; the winner is Bruce!" The referee raised the flag representing Bruce, officially concluding the match.
Looking at his fallen Froslass, Jaime fell silent for a moment.
But he quickly realized something important.
"It seems I'm the first one to actually give Bruce a back-and-forth fight."
"At least Froslass made Gardevoir use two attacking moves."
Jaime felt much better, a faint smile curving his lips.
"That's our Jaime!"
"At least Gardevoir didn't take him out instantly!"
"Well done!"
Meanwhile, Kandor University's coach watched the match silently before closing his notebook expressionlessly. He'd decided to stop analyzing Bruce's battles.
There's no point.
The strength of Bruce's Gardevoir was truly invincible.
Even if someone managed to defeat this Gardevoir, Bruce still had a Blaziken already at the professional level.
On the field,
Bruce and Jaime shook hands before parting ways.
In the stands above,
Kristin's gaze burned as she watched Bruce's retreating back, murmuring, "Yes, it's him."
She recalled the Blaziken that had confidently defeated Hawlucha, the scene of Cave Machamp's violent blow, and the words of Master Sugar Ray:
"The Blaziken you saw is exceptionally gifted—a once-in-a-lifetime rarity."
"But even with such talent, he works harder than anyone."
"Together, these traits will see him ascend to the pinnacle of martial arts in just a few years."
