Chapter 83: Chapter 83: Enhancing Stamina
Fossil Island, Northern Region
Kalia released Grovyle from its Poké Ball; the tent was already set up, and now it was time to find a suitable location for field training exercises.
Mani seemed reluctant to train with Kalia, opting instead to head westward towards Fossil Island's sandy areas with her Pokémon. The region predominantly featured Rock-type Pokémon, making it ideal for Water-types to engage in combat.
Kalia decided to observe first, as the wild Pokémon on Fossil Island were highly advanced, including some at their ultimate evolutionary stages. Examples like Venomoth, a dual Bug-Poison type, and Ariados posed significant dangers.
Quickly, Kalia chose to begin the practical training within the forest before moving towards the coastal area later.
The coastal training aimed to enhance Charmeleon's resistance against water, a fatal weakness for many Fire-type Pokémon. With this opportunity available, she couldn't afford to miss it.
Without addressing this vulnerability, encountering Water-type Pokémon could halve Charmeleon's effectiveness, severely impacting its battle capabilities.
With the training plan set, Kalia embarked with her Pokémon. They spent the morning practicing within the forest, pitting Grovyle against Bug and Poison-type Pokémon.
Although each battle was challenging, the results were impressive. Leveraging its speed advantage, every victory boosted Grovyle's confidence, making it fight even more courageously. Despite occasional injuries, Kalia had ample supplies to ensure no setbacks.
Meanwhile, Charmeleon trained independently. During wilderness sessions, Kalia couldn't effectively train both Pokémon simultaneously due to their differing needs.
For Lian, the forest was paradise; he felt like its reigning monarch. With just a hint of his Fire-type aura, nearby Pokémon became intimidated.
His combat ratings quickly depleted as he specifically targeted an Ariados, ensuring high-level battles for substantial rating gains.
Once out of combat ratings, Lian stopped being selective and charged at any Pokémon he encountered. While Fossil Island might house stronger Pokémon elsewhere, in this particular forest, Lian reigned supreme.
For the entire morning, Lian engaged in battles continuously. As his level increased, he also gained insights into more Fire-type moves; eagerly anticipating to learn Flamethrower soon.
The morning's battles were quite enjoyable for Lian. After lunch and a brief nap, Kalia led him towards the seaside, marking the beginning of a nightmare.
There was no sandy beach, only damp muddy terrain teeming with Water-type Pokémon like Krabby and Shellder. The most unsettling sight was the vast expanse of seawater, instantly triggering Lian's discomfort.
Kalia assigned him the task of battling these Water-type Pokémon to improve his evasion skills and resistance against their attacks.
Lian had no choice but to engage in combat. The wet mud hindered his speed, while facing the type-disadvantaged Water-type Pokémon made each battle challenging.
Fortunately, his strength combined with Kalia's guidance allowed him to overcome the discomfort after several encounters.

In the blink of an eye, it had been a week since Kalia arrived on Fossil Island. Initially planning to leave after a few days, they decided to stay longer due to ample food supplies and no news of the Gym Leader's return, allowing for additional practical training.
For Lian, this week was both agonizing yet fulfilling. The daily afternoon training sessions were challenging, but his strength improved rapidly. Each day, he consumed several energy cubes made from Charti Berries, steadily enhancing his Rock Resistance, although the progress was still minimal at present; however, over time, it would become significant.
Apart from improving Rock Resistance, Lian also leveled up to Level 20, resulting in substantial enhancements to his abilities.
On other fronts, there wasn't much change. He earned only modest Combat Points per battle, diligently saving them up, accumulating close to two thousand total Combat Points so far.
The Combat Points gained from battling wild Pokémon were significantly less compared to those obtained by facing Trainers. This discrepancy occurred because Trainers typically have multiple Pokémon, while battles with wild Pokémon are assessed based on individual combat ratings.
Lian missed engaging with Trainers as it yielded more Combat Points. However, for rapid leveling and growth, frequent wilderness training was essential. With abundant wild Pokémon available, battles could be initiated anytime.
This intensive schedule allowed Lian to reach Level 20 within just one week. Despite easily dominating each encounter, the sheer volume of battles facilitated significant overall progression, even if individually unchallenging.
Linnea had already returned early on the third day because her Mudkip suffered severe injuries and fell unconscious. With no more Potions available, Marill couldn't continue battling, forcing them to take a boat back for immediate Pokemon treatment.
The main issue was inadequate preparation. Kalia regularly scheduled breaks for her Pokemon, providing rest and healing to ensure their optimal mental and physical state.
This is a fundamental principle for Trainers—during wilderness training, never engage in battles with injured Pokemon. Not only does it hinder effective training, but it also risks endangering the Pokemon's well-being.
Nighttime.
As Lian lay sleeping in his tent, his consciousness entered the system space to review today's battle data.

Over these recent battles, Lian realized that Solar Power was practically useless, as it never seemed to activate. He deduced that it likely requires clear sunny weather for effectiveness, which means he needs to learn the Sunny Day move.
Therefore, Lian switched back to the Blaze Ability and plans to revert to Solar Power once he learns Sunny Day.
After reaching Level 20, the Slash move appeared in his repertoire. Lian unlocked it yesterday, but since Slash is an attack move, he didn't spend Combat Points to increase its proficiency yet.
"Huh?"
Suddenly, Lian noticed Water Resistance following Rock Resistance. He recalled it wasn't present yesterday, but now it had appeared today.
He guessed this might be due to frequently battling Water-type Pokémon recently. Kalia intentionally trained him to enhance his resistance against Water-types, and surprisingly, it seems to have worked.
Although visually, there appears no change in Water Resistance, still at double vulnerability, it's likely because the improvement is too subtle for the system to display.
Initially, Lian had no resistance to water attacks, but thanks to Kalia's training, he now possesses some level of Water Resistance. From here on, by spending Combat Points, he can further improve his Water Resistance.
Essentially, Kalia had unlocked a door for Lian. Without the system, continued training would have gradually improved his Water Resistance, albeit not as efficiently or straightforwardly as with the system's enhancements.
Over the past week, Lian also experimented with the Smokescreen move several times. Apart from producing denser and darker smoke, enhancing its effectiveness in obscuring opponents' vision, there were no other noticeable changes.
However, this improvement was significant. With a more potent Smokescreen, it could prove highly advantageous during critical moments of battle.
Today's combat rating rewards pushed Lian's Combat Points over 2,000, prompting him to consider upgrading his abilities.
Currently, only his Stamina ability remained unimproved. Honestly, his Stamina value was quite low. Previously, he hesitated due to concerns about impacting his combat ratings, but now he realized that apart from output-based rewards, others were secondary.
On the contrary, increasing his Stamina meant that even when facing unfavorable matchups, if unable to dodge attacks, he'd still have a chance to withstand them and continue dealing damage.
Most importantly, enhancing other aspects at this point wouldn't yield substantial gains, primarily because he lacked sufficient Combat Points to significantly boost those abilities. Attempting to upgrade them forcibly would result in minimal benefits.
Currently, Lian's Stamina ability value was 532. After calculating, if he maximized it, it would reach approximately 720 Stamina points. Each increase cost 5 Combat Points, totaling 940 Combat Points needed.
In the past, with over nine hundred Combat Points, Lian would have undoubtedly boosted his Special Attack or Speed. However, now using these points for Special Attack would yield minimal impact.
On the other hand, increasing his Stamina could provide a significant enhancement. Lian felt this upgrade was worth pursuing.
Without sufficient Stamina, facing Pokemon with high speed and output but fragile physiques, he might not survive long enough to seize opportunities.
Lian's level was too low; eventually, he would encounter Pokemon faster and more powerful than himself. If his speed couldn't match them and he lacked the resilience to withstand their attacks, even having high offensive capabilities would be futile, leaving him helpless.
Spending 940 Combat Points, Lian swiftly raised his Stamina ability from 532 to 720. Now, all his ability values had reached their maximum limits.
His total of over two thousand Combat Points dwindled down to just above twelve hundred.
"Time to sleep."
With such limited Combat Points remaining, Lian decided against rushing through them and planned to reconsider tomorrow night.

In Pearl City,
Due to Gym Leader Moran's prolonged absence, numerous complaints from new Trainers had arisen, catching the attention of the League. However, unable to reach Moran, they could only wait for her return before imposing any penalties.
Nearly a month passed without Moran returning, and the League's patience was wearing thin. They decided to appoint an exceptional student, skilled with Water-type Pokémon, from the Ruby Pokémon Academy as a temporary Gym Leader for Pearl City. This interim solution aimed to address the issue of new Trainers being unable to challenge the Water Gym.
At present, the temporary Gym Leader from the Ruby Pokémon Academy is already en route, heading towards Pearl City.
