Pokemon Battle System: I Reincarnated As A Charmander

Chapter 80: Chapter 80: Purchasing Berries

After crossing the river, Kalia entered Pearl City's jurisdiction. If she followed this river downstream, it would lead to the vast azure sea, home to countless Water-type Pokémon.

Legend has it that mythical creatures also reside deep within the ocean; however, due to its inherent dangers, few individuals have ventured far enough to investigate, leaving these tales unconfirmed.

Upon entering Pearl City, Kalia was stopped by a middle-aged man in police uniform. As a bustling port city and popular tourist destination, stringent identity checks were necessary to prevent malicious individuals from infiltrating the area.

Kalia presented her badge and Trainer identification card. Typically, Trainers carry official ID cards, and since Kalia's Treecko was provided by the League, she naturally had one as well.

"Be cautious during your stay here. Don't let your Pokemon roam freely outside," the officer kindly warned. Every city faces issues with Pokemon theft gangs, although they usually aren't as rampant as those in Falcon City.

"Thank you." Nodding, Kalia continued riding her bicycle, accompanied by Charmeleon, into Pearl City.

Upon entering Pearl City's vicinity, Kalia rode along a smooth rocky path and soon spotted its buildings.

The structures in Pearl City were neither tall nor densely clustered, but there was a bustling crowd of people. Most of them had arrived by boat from other cities for their travels.

It became evident that they were all heading towards Pearl City's Ocean Exhibition Hall, eager to explore its rare exhibits.

Kalia also showed interest in the Ocean Exhibition Hall, but after rushing on her journey all day, she felt quite tired. Moreover, it was getting late, so finding accommodation became a priority.

Pearl City had a Pokemon Hotel, but unfortunately, when Kalia arrived, it was fully booked. She then decided to check if the Pokémon Center had any available rooms.

Luckily, the Pokémon Center still had vacancies. Kalia checked in at the center's lodging area and took some time to rest.

Later that evening:

"Charmeleon, let's go to the market and buy some berries."

After waking up and realizing it wasn't too late, Kalia suggested this. Pearl City boasted a vibrant marketplace, where merchants frequently set up stalls due to its status as a port city.

Kalia intended to search for specific berries needed to complement the Charti Berry's flavor, which her Charmeleon enjoyed. For this purpose, she required some sweet-tasting berries.

The night market was even livelier, with bright lights illuminating the area like daylight, bustling with people coming and going.

As it was Kalia's first visit to Pearl City, she planned to explore and discover interesting items before making any purchases.

Following the crowd, Kalia observed various street vendors and their goods, noticing many products from other cities. One such item was Repel spray, designed to deter wild Pokemon up to a certain extent. However, due to its unpleasant odor, few people actually used it.

Unless venturing into dangerous areas, Trainers rarely carried Repel spray. Spraying oneself could also repel Pokemon, keeping them at bay by the scent, thus preventing potential attacks.

Another notable product was Sweet Honey, derived from Grass-type Pokémon that emit a Sweet Scent. This honey had the ability to attract wild Pokémon.

Apart from these, there were numerous other Pokémon-related items available, ranging from single-use to long-lasting ones. Among them, the most expensive were undoubtedly the Pokémon Nutritional Drinks.

The nutritional beverages came in six varieties, corresponding to the six attributes of Pokemon: Attack Boosting Beverage, Defense Boosting Beverage, and so on. These specialized drinks were only available for purchase in major cities, with each bottle costing 9,800 Alliance Coins - quite expensive.

However, their effectiveness had been proven; these beverages genuinely enhanced a specific potential attribute of Pokemon, with noticeable results. Many Trainers opted to spend money on them to strengthen their Pokemon's capabilities.

As Lian observed the various bottles of nutritional beverages, he recalled that in the game, these items indeed boosted a Pokemon's potential, referred to as Effort Values (EVs). However, there seemed to be a limit of ten bottles, with each bottle increasing EVs by only one point.

In reality, although Effort Values weren't explicitly mentioned, they likely fell under the broader concept of potential. When Trainers speak of a Pokemon having strong potential, it essentially refers to similar concepts akin to Effort Values.

Lian suspected that reaching the maximum ability value actually meant filling up the Effort Value cap. Unlike in the game, however, it appeared that Lian was not restricted; he could potentially max out all his abilities, while ordinary Pokemon seemed limited to achieving two maximum ability values at most.

Lian wasn't sure if other real-world Pokemon could only have two maximum ability values, but it likely follows a similar pattern.

"Hey Trainer, would you like to try this bottle? It's a nutrient drink that enhances Special Attack, perfect for your Charmeleon," said the middle-aged vendor, noticing Kalia observing nearby. He picked up a bottle of special attack booster and offered enthusiastically.

Kalia shook her head. Although she didn't know the exact potential of Charmeleon's Special Attack, it was clearly already at a very high level. These nutrient drinks are most effective when used on weaker Pokemon; once their potential increases significantly, the impact diminishes.

Moreover, Kalia was just browsing with no intention to buy; her focus was actually on the lady selling berries next door.

"I'm not purchasing today, thank you, sir," Kalia apologized politely before moving towards the adjacent stall filled with various types of berries. Most of these were standard berries without unique effects, primarily used for making Energy Cubes.

Lian eyed the vibrant and enticing berries, feeling slightly tempted. However, despite their appealing appearance, he knew that many of these berries had rather unpleasant tastes.

"Hello, Auntie! How much for these Nanab Berries?" Kalia confidently pointed to a type of pink berry resembling bananas but with a distinctive pink hue. These berries looked delightful and tasted sweet, albeit with a slight bitter undertone.

While not the ideal combination, mixing Nanab Berries with Charti Berries to create Energy Cubes was still viable. Nanab Berries were specifically used for making Energy Cubes and were relatively inexpensive.

"You have quite the knowledge, young lady. Many people don't recognize this fruit. Each berry costs thirty Alliance Coins. How many would you like?" Mrs. Laney responded upon seeing Kalia's interest.

"Thirty Alliance Coins? That's quite expensive. Can you give me a discount?" Kalia frowned slightly.

In Rhine City, Nanab Berries were sold for only twenty Alliance Coins, so finding them priced at thirty here seemed excessively high.

Mrs. Laney smiled warmly and replied, "Thirty Alliance Coins is reasonable; these berries are incredibly sweet, loved by Pokemon. If you feed them to your Pokemon, it will definitely strengthen its bond with you."

Kalia felt slightly speechless as Nanab Berries were not rare at all. Many cities have abundant supplies for sale, primarily used for making Energy Cubes. Kalia chose them specifically for their sweetness and affordability.

To mask the bitterness of Charti Berries, two parts of Nanab Berries are needed for each part of Charti Berry. Therefore, Kalia had to purchase a significant amount.

"Auntie, whatever quantity of Nanab Berries you have, I'll buy them all. But could you offer a discount?" Kalia thought briefly before decisively asking.

Upon hearing this, Mrs. Laney immediately understood Kalia's intent. She priced them high to earn more profit, given that berry sales weren't particularly strong.

"Alright, I have ten berries in total. How about selling them to you at twenty-five Alliance Coins each? That would be a total of two hundred fifty Alliance Coins. Is that fair?" Mrs. Laney proposed.

"Okay." Kalia nodded in agreement. It was clear that Mrs. Laney had likely purchased the berries from a store herself. Selling them at just twenty Alliance Coins might even result in a loss, so twenty-five Alliance Coins seemed acceptable.
