Chapter 62: Chapter 62: The Chaos of the Preliminary Round
"Welcome, everyone, to our Pokémon Battle Tournament! Based on skill levels, the competition is divided into three tiers: Elite Beginner, Elite Intermediate, and Elite Advanced."
"Today, we're hosting the Elite Beginner tournament. To begin, participants must pass a preliminary round—a chaotic selection process—after which 32 competitors will advance to a knockout stage to determine the top three."
"Now, let's welcome our participants!"
As the host's voice rang out, the participants of the Elite Beginner tournament were guided by staff to a massive battlefield.
According to the host, the so-called preliminary round involved all participants releasing their Pokémon at once, with 32 participants being selected based on performance.
From the organizers' perspective, those who stood out among nearly 200 participants were bound to put on a spectacular show, fulfilling the dual purpose of saving time and ensuring exciting battles.
The sound of Poké Balls opening echoed through the arena, and dazzling white light filled the space as Pokémon materialized one after another.
Without hesitation, Ron found a spot and released his Machoke.
While waiting for the round to begin, Ron surveyed his opponents and spotted Buggy among them. However, they were too far apart for Ron to greet him.
Once all the Pokémon were released, the host's voice came again, announcing the start of the preliminary round.
"Machoke, use Focus Energy and be ready to use Shave to evade anytime!"
At the onset of the preliminary round, Ron instructed Machoke to play defensively.
Although Machoke was strong, nearly 200 Elite Beginner-level Pokémon were in the fray. If Machoke showcased overwhelming strength, it would inevitably draw attention and get ganged up on. Hence, Ron decided to keep a low profile.
Many participants shared Ron's strategy, with more than half instructing their Pokémon to stay in place, while the rest dove straight into the chaos.
The energy waves from over a hundred battling Pokémon quickly spread. Pokémon were continually knocked out of the fight, while others were drawn into the skirmish.
At times, trainers who had just repelled an opponent would find themselves ambushed from behind, losing their chance to continue.
Before long, someone targeted Machoke. After all, until you've battled an opponent, you can't tell if they're genuinely strong or just a paper tiger.
"Dodrio, use Quick Attack!"
Dodrio's natural speed, combined with the boost from Quick Attack, allowed it to move at incredible velocity. However, its every move was within Ron's grasp.
"Machoke, use Leer to your left, then throw it with Seismic Toss!"
Following Ron's command, Machoke turned and used Leer, exposing a flaw in Dodrio's charge.
The next moment, Machoke grabbed Dodrio by the neck and flung it out of bounds with a powerful toss.
According to the rules, being forced out of the battlefield in the preliminary round meant elimination—a calculated move by Ron to conserve Machoke's energy.
Defeating one Dodrio seemed to set off a chain reaction, and soon more Pokémon came after Machoke.
As Ron had instructed earlier, Machoke fought with measured strength to avoid drawing too much attention. Regardless of the opponent's power, Machoke engaged in evenly matched battles, ultimately coming out victorious.
Despite his efforts to stay low-key, Machoke's defeat of three Pokémon caught the attention of some trainers, including Colon and Bogin.
Unlike other trainers, Colon and Bogin were long-time travel companions who had decided to team up for the tournament. They aimed to eliminate capable Pokémon early on.
Their next target was Machoke.
After a quick exchange of glances, Colon's Primeape charged from the front with Karate Chop, while Bogin's Hitmonlee stealthily approached, waiting for an opening to strike a decisive blow.
"Machoke, counter with Close Combat!"
Ron had been watching Colon and Bogin's tactics from the start, ready to take them down in one decisive strike.
Even without using Shave for speed, Machoke's movements were astonishingly quick.
Machoke dashed toward Primeape, dismantling its Karate Chop with a precise Close Combat and hurling it into the chaotic fray of battling Pokémon.
Once a Pokémon was thrown into the middle of such a brawl, its fate was sealed—it would be overwhelmed and eliminated.
From behind, Bogin's Hitmonlee used Mega Kick, aiming squarely for Machoke's back.
"Machoke, turn and use Leer followed by Seismic Toss!"
Even amidst the chaos, Machoke could clearly hear Ron's commands.
As Machoke turned, its Leer momentarily stunned Hitmonlee. Seizing the opportunity, Machoke grabbed Hitmonlee by the legs and threw it into the melee, relying on the other Pokémon to finish the job.
"Machoke, watch your back!"
The moment Machoke threw Hitmonlee, Ron's urgent voice rang out. A searing Flamethrower attack shot toward Machoke from behind.
Following Ron's previous instructions, Machoke dodged to the left at its fastest non-Shave speed, narrowly avoiding the flames.
Tracing the source of the attack, Ron saw a Nidoking preparing to use Thunderbolt.
If Machoke had taken the unguarded Flamethrower, it would have suffered severe damage, and combined attacks from other Pokémon could have led to elimination—or worse.
Ron's gaze darkened.
Long, Nidoking's trainer, was unaware of Ron's growing anger. He was solely focused on Machoke, whose performance had impressed him. Like Colon and Bogin, Long aimed to eliminate Machoke.
But Ron had a different plan.
"Machoke, dodge and charge at them!"
Ready for the signal, Machoke began its assault, effortlessly evading Nidoking's attacks while closing the distance.
Just as Long was about to order another attack, the host's voice rang out, announcing the end of the preliminary round.
"What a lucky guy. I hope you keep that luck in the knockout stage," Long sneered as he recalled Nidoking.
Watching Long, Ron hesitated. Should he deal with Long later? Not just to settle the score for the ambush but also to vent his frustration—those triangular eyes were just too irritating.
After a moment's thought, Ron made up his mind. Once the tournament was over, he'd tail Long and seize an opportunity to teach him a lesson.
