Chapter 161: Chapter 161: The Harbinger of Misfortune
After extensive testing and verification, Ron had finally reached the minimum standard required to begin practicing the Breathing Technique.
Compared to the Auraberry, the Terraberry proved to be far more beneficial for Ron.
The Auraberry enhanced defense, with improvements to Ron's physical attributes being only incidental. On the other hand, the Terraberry was specifically designed to bolster a Pokémon's stamina, significantly enhancing Ron's overall physical fitness.
Combined with Ron's grueling training regimen—one intense enough to break lesser individuals—it was no wonder that he was able to make substantial progress in just three days, taking the final step toward mastering the Breathing Technique.
Taking a moment to calm his excitement, Ron began his first training session.
The Breathing Technique involves synchronizing specific breathing rhythms with deliberate movements to fully tap into the body's latent potential.
Following the described method, Ron began to move.
Each seemingly slow movement, paired with precise breathing patterns, gave Ron the sensation of being trapped in a swamp. It felt as though an invisible force was actively resisting his every action.
After just one cycle of the technique, Ron was drenched in sweat, gasping for air. Every cell in his body seemed to scream in protest.
Once his breathing returned to normal, Ron closed his eyes to quietly sense the changes in his body.
After a brief rest, Ron felt his body recover and detected subtle improvements in his overall condition. While the changes were minor, they were undeniable.
Clenching his fist, Ron's eyes sparkled with excitement.
If mastering the Six Powers had previously seemed like a distant dream, it now felt like a tangible and achievable goal.
As long as he continued to progress step by step, he was confident that he would eventually master the Navy's Six Powers!
Ron began alternating between using his inner Fighting Aura to recover and performing the Breathing Technique to train.
By evening, Ron finally recalled his Machamp and other Pokémon into their Poké Balls and leisurely left the training room to step onto the deck.
Under the golden glow of the setting sun, the sea turned a radiant red, and the shimmering waves helped Ron unwind.
Gazing into the distance, Ron noticed a small, blurry black dot on the horizon but thought little of it. Instead, he sought a quiet spot to release his Gyarados.
It was Gyarados' first time seeing the vast ocean, and it stared blankly at the horizon for a moment. Only when Ron called out did it snap out of its stupor and swim alongside the ship.
Watching Gyarados frolic in the water and chase the ship, Ron occasionally tossed premium Pokéblocks into the sea, marveling as Gyarados leaped out of the water to catch them.
At that moment, Ron felt like a Beast Tamer, guiding Gyarados through various tricks and maneuvers.
Only when it was time for dinner did Ron reluctantly recall the energetic Gyarados and head into the ship's cabin.
Unbeknownst to Ron, the blurry black dot he had seen earlier did not disappear. Instead, it drew closer to the ship as night fell.
...
Nightfall.
Exhausted, Ron quickly fell into a deep sleep, while his Kirlia quietly stayed in his room, meditating instead of sleeping.
This dual-purpose approach was Ron's idea—not only would Kirlia be on guard during the night, but its psychic powers could also be honed in the process.
Far off in the distance, the blurry black dot transformed into another ship. One by one, over a dozen individuals clad in diving suits plunged into the sea.
Moments later, waves splashed as they deployed some kind of accelerators, allowing them to close the gap between themselves and Ron's ship at astonishing speed. The cover of night was their perfect ally.
In the ship's bridge, Captain Quint noticed the intruders on the radar and immediately dispatched a team to confirm the intentions of the approaching vessel.
However, the divers reached the ship first, using specialized tools to climb aboard.
Drenched, they quickly gathered and released their Pokémon, targeting the crew and sailors onboard.
In Ron's cabin, Kirlia abruptly opened its eyes, sensing hostile presences and Pokémon being swiftly neutralized.
Suddenly, the ship rocked violently, jolting Ron awake.
"Kirlia, use Psychic to scan the area! Alert me the moment you sense anyone approaching," Ron commanded.
"Prepare for battle. Trouble might be heading our way."
As the ship shook, Ron sprang into action. Using telepathy, he instructed Kirlia to awaken Gyarados and have it ready for any emergency.
If the situation escalated, Kirlia would use Teleport to evacuate them, while Gyarados would provide mobility on the open sea.
...
"This is a pirate attack! Passengers, please lock your doors and hide," the ship's intercom blared in a repetitive announcement.
"To the trainers onboard: we ask for your assistance in repelling the pirates. Please exercise caution and identify friend from foe before engaging."
On the deck, Captain Quint had already rallied the remaining crew and sailors.
Despite sustaining losses during the initial ambush, the group still consisted of 20-30 individuals, thanks to the captain's foresight in keeping everyone on high alert.
With his near-Elite Four-level strength, Captain Quint quickly repelled the intruders, but his concern lay with the approaching pirate ship.
Given its full-throttle pursuit and abandonment of firepower, it was evident that the enemy was confident in their abilities and aimed to rob the ship clean.
Even with his considerable strength, Captain Quint couldn't shake the feeling of unease.
He could only hope the distress signal he had sent earlier would summon reinforcements strong enough to protect the ship.
...
In his room, Ron listened to the announcement in stunned silence.
Once again, he felt like a harbinger of misfortune.
First, the wild Pokémon rampage near Pewter City. Then, the ambush by Pokémon hunters on Mt. Moon. The poaching team attack in Moonshade Village.
Now, a simple sea voyage had turned into a pirate assault.
Ron couldn't help but fear that the Indigo League Conference would be disrupted by some grand scheme from Team Rocket.
After all, given his luck, it wasn't impossible.
But before worrying about that, Ron knew he had to survive this pirate attack first.
