Chapter 18: Bruno's Challenge - Part 5
As Machamp enters the battlefield, Isaac notices something strange. "He advanced? A pseudo-champion, huh? Now that is a surprise!"
"This is going to be an amazing battle," Bruno says with a grin.
"Macham!"
On the field, Machamp assumes a boxing stance, all four arms raised, a wild smile on his face.
Unaffected by the sandstorm's damage, he stands firm, without hesitation or flinching, staring down Tyranitar with a provoking gaze.
Watching his Machamp, Bruno flexes his muscles and takes a similar fighting stance.
"Hahahahahaha…"
Seeing both Bruno and Machamp in a boxing stance, Isaac bursts into laughter, recalling the past.
'Who would've thought that scrawny boy and that red-potential Machop would become what they are now? Time really flies, huh.'
"Huff…"
Taking a deep breath, Isaac looks at the battlefield, then locks eyes with Bruno.
"Let's go wild, Tyranitar! Outrage!"
Covered in purple dragon-type energy, Tyranitar charges toward Machamp in a frenzy, his already monstrous stats further enhanced by the move.
Watching the colossus rush at him, Machamp takes a relaxed stance, preparing to face the attack head-on.
"Seismic Toss!"
At the moment of impact, Machamp quickly pivots on his feet, grabbing Tyranitar's arm and turning swiftly. Using his center of gravity, he fluidly executes a judo throw, slamming Tyranitar forcefully into the ground.
BOOOOOOM
"TYYY…"
Tyranitar lets out a pained groan as he crashes into the battlefield, cracks spreading across the arena.
"Taar…"
A small crater forms, with Tyranitar lying in its center, clearly enraged, his armor slightly damaged.
Suddenly, flames flicker around Machamp's body, and then a glow briefly envelops him before fading.
"Flame Orb with Guts… classic," Isaac murmurs, noticing the small flame on Machamp's chest.
Looking at Machamp, Isaac recalls a conversation with a younger Bruno, back at the start of his journey.
"I didn't choose him for his strength or potential, but because he's like me—dedicated and passionate about martial arts. That's why I didn't care about his potential. We built that up, step by step."
As Isaac traveled across Kanto for events, he watched the boy and his Machop, then his Machoke, and now the Machamp standing before him.
He had seen Bruno grow, become stronger.
Now, facing the man in battle, Isaac smiles.
"Get up, and use Dragon Pulse!"
"TYRUN!"
Rising to his feet, Tyranitar gathers energy in his mouth, aims at Machamp, and fires.
Machamp leaps aside, trying to dodge, but Tyranitar keeps blasting, following his movements closely.
Until—he can't dodge in time. Quickly, Machamp forms a Fire Punch. With flames engulfing his fist, he punches the Dragon Pulse head-on.
For a moment, a stalemate forms.
Tyranitar widens his jaws, increasing the power of his Dragon Pulse.
Machamp holds firm for a while but can't withstand it any longer. The attack strikes his face, sending him flying, bouncing across the terrain.
Using all four hands to grip the ground, he carves six drag marks into the dirt.
Letting go, Machamp stands up, cracking his shoulders and shaking the arm he had punched with.
"Earthquake!" Bruno shouts, throwing a jab forward.
"Earthquake!" Isaac commands, intending to counter Machamp's attack with his own.
With their trainers' orders, both Pokémon stomp the ground with full force.
Cracks spread from where each of them stands, powerful tremors surging toward each other.
Chunks of earth rise as the quakes collide, sending rocks and dust flying.
The impact between two near-champion-level Pokémon causes even more destruction than the previous clashes.
"Hyper Beam!"
"Protect! Bulk Up!"
"TYRANN!"
With a roar, Tyranitar fires a massive golden beam toward Machamp.
"CHAAAMP!"
Hearing Isaac, Bruno commands Machamp, who plants his feet firmly, crossing all four arms in front of his body in a defensive posture. A thin circular layer of green energy envelops him as he flexes his body, strengthening himself, and letting out a deep, guttural war cry.
The Hyper Beam collides with the transparent green barrier.
Gritting his teeth, Machamp steps forward, slowly but firmly.
"Tar... Tar..."
Finally, Tyranitar stops firing, panting heavily.
As the Hyper Beam fades, the Protect shield is revealed—cracked, but still standing.
With the protective barrier dissipating, Machamp stands atop a raised chunk of land that formed around him, the area surrounding it now lower, charred, and smoking.
"Champ…"
Looking around in surprise, Machamp exhales.
Though momentarily immobilized due to the Hyper Beam, Tyranitar shakes his head violently.
"Confusion…" both Bruno and Isaac mutter as they watch Tyranitar.
The difference? Isaac is smiling.
Suddenly, Tyranitar's eyes regain clarity.
Surprised, Bruno analyzes the situation. "Lum Berry…"
He exhales, then crosses his arms, looking at the battlefield.
"Machamp, take off the belt."
Few people know why Bruno's Machamp still wears the belt from his Machoke days. Every Pokémon that reaches Elite-level has something special about them—but those who reach near-champion status? Even more so.
Machoke wear the belt to contain their energy, preventing them from overloading. When they evolve into Machamp, they no longer need it, as they can fully control their power.
But Bruno's Machamp is different. Through intense training and conditioning, Machamp became stronger than most of his kind. However, just like a Machoke, he still had energy that needed to be contained. The belt held that power in check—but once removed, he became a destructive force.
Every Elite Four trainer has something special.
Removing the belt, Machamp feels an immense surge of energy coursing through his body.
"Bullet Punch! Follow up with Brutal Swing!"
With his eyes turning red, Machamp rushes toward Tyranitar at lightning speed.
"Fire Punch!" Isaac shouts, ready to counterattack.
With a flaming fist, Tyranitar prepares to strike.
With a gleaming silver fist, Machamp closes in.
"TAR!"
"CHAM!"
Their punches collide, creating sparks and a small shockwave.
Momentarily matched in strength, Machamp takes two steps back, his body now glowing red as he readies Brutal Swing.
Brutal Swing—a combat technique created by Bruno, simple in essence but deadly in execution. A fusion of Close Combat with various moves. Hariyama combined Close Combat with Force Palm and Reversal, but Machamp? His Brutal Swing was unique, combining Close Combat with Fire Punch, Thunder Punch, Ice Punch, and Poison Jab.
Designed to disable and immobilize opponents, it was a technique that burned through energy fast. That's why Bruno only used it to end battles swiftly—like now.
"Protect!" Recognizing the move, Isaac orders in alarm.
Instantly, a thin green shield envelops Tyranitar.
With his fists glowing red-hot, golden-yellow, icy blue, and venomous purple, Machamp strikes the shield with relentless fury.
Cracks form. The barrier holds for a moment—
CRACK!
The shield shatters into pieces.
"CHAMP!"
Machamp unleashes a barrage of blows, hammering Tyranitar's armored body.
"Ty…"
Status effects begin to overwhelm Tyranitar—burns, paralysis, freezing, and poisoning. He struggles but collapses, cracks forming in his armor.
Yet, his fighting spirit refuses to yield, and Isaac does not recall him.
"TYRANITAR…"
He would only leave the battlefield unconscious.
"CHAMP…"
Standing before Tyranitar, fists still glowing, Machamp meets his gaze. A warrior recognizes a warrior.
With a final Rock Smash, Machamp smashes Tyranitar's face, knocking him out cold.
"Tyranitar is unable to battle. Machamp wins. Isaac is out of Pokémon—Bruno is the victor," the referee announces, declaring Bruno as the new Elite Four member.
At the Pokémon Center in Violet City, in contrast to the lively discussions of the crowd in front of the television, the four children and Nurse Joy remain silent.
"Incredible," says Tyson, his eyes wide with admiration.
"Yes," replies Victor, equally impressed by the techniques Bruno displayed.
"That technique... four different types of punches…" Lakin murmurs, a peculiar gleam in his eyes.
"Curious, Lakin? You have a Machop too, right? Thinking about learning that?" Tyson asks with a teasing smile.
"Unlikely. I don't have the martial arts experience to pull that off," Lakin responds in an indifferent tone after a deeper analysis.
"I was just joking," Tyson says, laughing.
The conversation soon shifts to another topic until they grow tired and decide to go to sleep.
