"What!" Gary looked at the scene in shock, his face tightening into a frown.
"Hit!" Misty gasped, covering her mouth as she watched the field, wide-eyed in surprise.
"How could that happen?"
Gary's friends, who had been cheering him on, were now stunned into silence. The Double Team had created so many clones that spotting the real one should have been nearly impossible.
"Nice shot!" Delia said, unfazed by the intricacies of the battle. She didn't quite understand the mechanics but eagerly pressed the camera's shutter, capturing the action.
"Gary, did you forget the first lesson Professor Oak taught us during summer camp three years ago—about Abilities?" Ash smirked, glancing at Gary's startled expression.
"Abilities… of course!" Gary paused, then his eyes lit up with realization.
"Abilities? Professor Oak, what's this summer camp lesson Ash is talking about?" Delia asked, turning to Professor Oak after snapping a photo. She remembered the camp Professor Oak held three years ago.
Professor Oak nodded, his eyes twinkling. "I'm impressed Ash remembered! That summer, we encountered a few surprises. When a Fearow attacked, I used it to teach the kids a quick lesson. Every Pokémon has a unique Ability. For instance, some Flying-type Pokémon have Keen Eye, which allows them to see through evasive moves."
He looked back at the field with pride. "Ash has done well to remember that lesson and to understand his Pokémon's Abilities. Thanks to Pidgeotto's Keen Eye, it locked on to Scyther's real body."
"Not bad! Scyther, use Agility!" Gary commanded, his Scyther now focused and undeterred.
Despite taking a hit, Scyther wasn't about to back down. With renewed energy, it darted forward, zigzagging in the air and increasing its speed.
Pidgeotto tracked Scyther closely with its keen eyes, but Scyther's speed was now pushing Pidgeotto's limits. Just as Scyther accelerated, Gary seized the moment.
"Scyther, use Fury Cutter!"
Scyther spread its arms, a green glow igniting along the blade of its scythe, which slashed directly toward Pidgeotto.
"Pidgeotto, up and out of the way!" Ash shouted.
Pidgeotto reacted instantly, gaining altitude with a powerful flap of its wings to dodge the strike.
"Keep up with it, Scyther!" Gary ordered.
Not one to back down, Scyther quickly followed, slicing through the air with its scythe raised. As Pidgeotto dodged, Scyther closed the gap with another swing of its wings, accelerating forward.
Boom!
Scyther's scythe found its mark, striking Pidgeotto directly.
With a powerful impact, Pidgeotto's body was sent plummeting toward the ground by Scyther's blow.
"Ash, did you forget that Scyther can also fly?" Gary called out with a grin.
Since Scyther rarely used its wings to fly, it was easy to overlook this ability, but as a Scyther, it naturally had the capability.
"Pidgeotto!!" Ash shouted as his Pokémon fell toward the battlefield.
"Pidgeotto!"
Hearing Ash's voice, Pidgeotto opened its eyes just before hitting the ground, quickly flapping its wings to regain balance. Hovering just above the field, Pidgeotto had managed to avoid being grounded by Scyther's attack.
"Phew… Thankfully, Pidgeotto is a Flying-type," Misty sighed with relief. As a Bug-type move, Fury Cutter wouldn't do major damage to Pidgeotto.
However, Ash remained tense. He knew that type advantage alone wasn't enough to determine the outcome. What really mattered was strength and strategy. Even if a move like Fury Cutter wasn't super effective, it still packed a punch.
"Scyther, use Fury Cutter again!"
*Swish!*
Scyther swooped down from above, preparing to unleash another Fury Cutter. Ash's eyes sharpened as he saw the opportunity.
"Pidgeotto, use Sand Attack!"
"Pidgeoo!"
Responding swiftly, Pidgeotto flapped its wings down toward the ground, kicking up a cloud of dust that rose into Scyther's path, obscuring its vision.
*Flutter!*
The swirling dust cloud clouded Scyther's sight, giving Pidgeotto the cover it needed. Ash seized the moment.
"Steel Wing!" Ash commanded.
Pidgeotto's wings glowed with a metallic sheen, extending as they gleamed in the dust. With a burst of speed, Pidgeotto flew straight into the dust cloud.
*Bang!*
Steel Wing connected with Scyther in a sharp blow, sending a shockwave through the battlefield that cleared the dust cloud. Pidgeotto flew past as Scyther was knocked backward from the impact.
"Ohhh, Ash's Pidgeotto has learned Steel Wing!" Professor Oak remarked, clearly impressed.
Steel Wing was a powerful move, capable of dealing considerable damage and even raising defense. While Flying-type Pokémon excelled in speed, they often lacked in defense compared to sturdier Pokémon like Skarmory, who traded some speed for defensive strength.
