Planet Lord: The Rise of Civilization

Chapter 12: Descent into the Abyss

The sound of heavy boots echoed in the old stone hallway as the team moved deeper into the ruins. Soldiers, engineers, and scouts walked in tight lines. Their torches flickered against the cold stones, showing off strange symbols and carvings on the walls.

Rael led the group at the front. Behind him was Captain Thorne, a tough guy with a serious face. Five squads of soldiers followed, each squad leader giving quiet orders to keep everyone in line. The engineers, wearing lighter gear, looked around carefully for any traps. Lyssa, one of the engineers, was busy studying the symbols, trying to figure out what they meant.

"Status report," Rael said without turning around.

"Squad One has the back covered. No hostiles up ahead," Captain Thorne replied in a low voice. "Engineers are on the lookout."

"Keep moving," Rael said firmly. "Stay in formation. No one does anything without orders."

Kael walked next to the engineers, tossing a knife in his hand. "This place is creepy. It's too quiet. No drones, no guardians... just us."

"Don't say that," Thorne cautioned, scanning the dark.

Lyssa, however, was stuck on the symbols. "These carvings are important. This pattern looks like a circuit. This place isn't empty. It's listening to us."

Rael's brow furrowed. "It knows we're here?"

Lyssa turned to him, serious. "I'm sure of it. This isn't just a ruin. It's still active."

Rael raised his hand, signaling everyone to stop. The soldiers froze, weapons ready. Tension hung in the air. Rael stared ahead.

"Double the scouts," he ordered. "No one touches anything unless Lyssa or the engineers say so. If this place can hear us, it can defend itself. We can't afford a mistake like last time."

Thorne nodded sharply and passed the order to the squad leaders. Scouts moved ahead, darting into the shadows.

"Let's keep moving," Rael urged. "We're getting close."

---

They descended into a huge underground chamber. The ceiling was so high that it vanished into the dark. The air felt thick with humidity, and a faint humming noise came from below. Blue lights lined the walls, casting a cold glow that made the place feel both old and alive.

"Wow," one of the engineers whispered. "It's like being inside a giant machine."

In the center of the room was a raised platform covered in glowing symbols. The engineers approached it carefully, checking it with their tools. Lyssa's eyes widened in understanding.

"It's an activation core," she said in awe. "If we connect to it, we can control everything—traps, doors, you name it."

"That also means we can manage defenses," Thorne pointed out. "If we take this, we own the place."

Rael nodded. "Then let's take it."

He turned to the engineers. "Get started. Thorne, secure the area. I want eyes on every entry point."

"Got it," Thorne said, his voice booming. "Squads two and three, form a defensive perimeter. Shields up! I want cover everywhere!"

The soldiers sprang into action. Barricades were set up. Archers took higher positions, while melee fighters readied themselves at choke points. Tension filled the air as they watched for any signs of danger.

Kael smirked as he watched the soldiers organize. "Whatever comes out of there doesn't stand a chance."

"Don't get cocky," Rael replied, scanning the chamber. "Stay alert."

---

"Got it!" Lyssa shouted from the platform. She pressed the symbols quickly. The hum grew stronger. A deep thrum shook the chamber.

"The system's responding!" she said, wiping sweat from her brow. "The core is opening."

The symbols began to spin, and the platform split apart. A glowing sphere, the size of a soldier's head, rose up. The whole room shook as the core pulsed with energy.

"Lyssa, what's going on?" Rael called.

Lyssa looked at the console, nerves evident. "There's a feedback loop. The core's sending out a signal. It's looking for... something."

"What kind of something?"

Before she could answer, a deep noise rumbled from the ground. The chamber shook, and dust fell from the ceiling. The blue lights brightened as mechanical noises surrounded them.

"Contact!" shouted a scout from above. "Enemies at the west and south!"

"Prepare yourselves!" Captain Thorne shouted. "Fire when ready!"

Metallic sounds filled the air. Spider-like machines with red eyes emerged from the shadows. The soldiers opened fire. Crossbow bolts and gunshots rang out as sparks flew from hits.

"Hold the line!" Thorne yelled, taking down one of the machines that got too close. "Don't let them through!"

Rael stood at the front, slicing through machines with precision. "Focus on the big ones! Shields up!"

The soldiers created a strong defense, their shields interlocking as the machines rushed toward them. Archers and riflemen kept firing down at the attacking machines.

Lyssa stayed by the core, focusing on the symbols. Just a bit more! she shouted. If I can reset the system, we might be okay!

"You have thirty seconds!" Rael yelled. "Make it count."

Kael smiled as he took down another spider. "After this, we deserve a big prize."

"Survive first, then think about prizes!" Thorne shouted, stabbing a nearby machine.

---

"System reset!" Lyssa shouted, slamming her hand on the last symbol. A shockwave spread from the core, freezing the constructs in place. Their red eyes dimmed as they collapsed.

Silence followed.

Rael breathed steadily, scanning the area for any movement. The soldiers stood ready but nothing moved.

"We did it," Lyssa said, panting. She stared at the core, now softly glowing. "We've got control of the ruins."

"Not just this place," she added, glancing at Rael with excitement. "If we connect this core, we can control all linked ruins. Every trap, every defense."

Rael's face hardened. "Then we've got more foes than we realized."

"Let them come," Kael said with a grin, nudging a fallen spider. "We've got the keys now."

"No," Rael replied, focusing on the core. "This is just the start. They will come. Every lord, every rival will want this."

Silence fell over the soldiers as they processed Rael's words.

"We need to be ready," Captain Thorne said quietly.

Rael's gaze remained firm. "We will be."
