Chapter 30: Chapter 30: The Tsunami
355 kilometers southwest of Rum Kingdom, a heavily armed merchant ship bearing the flag of the Rum Trading Company sailed swiftly toward Oykot Kingdom.
Suddenly, from a distant black, barren island, a towering pillar of fire shot into the sky.
Boom!
From the ship's lookout post, Anthony's face paled at the sight. Without delay, he sounded the alarm.
Vic and Ari, resting in the cabin, rushed onto the deck as soon as they heard the alarm. They were met with the panicked crew members and, in the distance, the terrifying column of fire rising into the sky.
"An underwater volcano?!"
"What do we do now?"
Anthony leapt down from the lookout, quickly issuing orders. "Ari, go to the control room and open a wormhole to transport everyone back to the secret port in Bluefin Town."
"Vic, gather all the crew and head to the control room."
Ari ran to the control room, clapped his hands together, and said, "Wormhole, open!"
Within minutes, Vic had gathered the dozen or so crew members and led them to the control room, where they filed through the wormhole one by one.
Just moments after the last person left the ship, a rain of scorching lava began falling from the sky like a meteor shower.
But that was only the beginning. A colossal tsunami, over a hundred meters high, surged up, expanding rapidly in all directions.
Back in Bluefin Town, Anthony and the crew quickly reported the situation to Noah.
Upon hearing the news, Noah immediately summoned all his people in Rum Kingdom. Ari and Lilith were assigned as the monitoring team and were sent to track the approaching tsunami.
With the tsunami 355 kilometers away, it was clear that by the time it reached Rum Kingdom, it would still have much of its power. The southwest part of Rum Island, with elevations ranging from 20 to 80 meters, wouldn't be able to withstand a 50-meter-tall wave.
Noah quickly dispatched Barton to begin evacuating the coastal residents.
Meanwhile, Lilith reported through a Den Den Mushi that the tsunami was fast approaching. It was now less than 200 kilometers away, with less than an hour before impact.
Noah wasn't going to sit back and wait.
He, along with Jay, Lilian, and the returning Ari, used the wormhole to teleport to a small island about 80 kilometers from Rum Island.
The island was tiny, barely a few thousand square meters, but it sat directly between the incoming tsunami and Rum Island. Noah planned to use the island to weaken the tsunami's force as much as possible.
"Jay, build a V-shaped breakwater out of graphite," Noah instructed.
"On it, big brother," Jay replied, plunging his hands into the ground. Soon, a massive V-shaped graphite wall began to rise from the earth, with its pointed edge facing the direction of the tsunami.
Jay's graphite constructions were temporary—if he lost his strength or passed out, they would revert back to their original state. Permanent graphite structures weren't created from thin air by his Devil Fruit powers; instead, he used the surrounding environment's carbon to synthesize the material.
If the Graphite Fruit allowed him to create or transform elements permanently, his power would be on par with planet-destroying levels. Even awakened Devil Fruits couldn't create or transform elements into new forms permanently.
For instance, Doflamingo's String-String Fruit could temporarily turn the surrounding environment into strings, but if he stopped maintaining it or lost consciousness, the strings would revert to their original state.
As Jay's V-shaped breakwater continued to grow in height and width, Lilian's body ignited into flames.
Unlike other Fire-Logia users, her flames weren't the usual orange-red—they were blue and white.
"No Mercy Sun!"
A massive blue-white fireball expanded around Lilian, growing to over 100 meters in radius within seconds.
The fireball then shot toward the ocean below.
Hiss…
The moment the fireball touched the sea, the water began boiling furiously. At 2,830 degrees Celsius, the fireball's heat was so intense that the seawater evaporated instantly. Parts of the ocean even split into hydrogen and oxygen, fueling the flames further.
In less than ten minutes, a kilometer-wide hole had formed in the sea, exposing the seafloor.
Lilian, now standing on the glassy remains of the dried-up seabed, was panting heavily. The move had taken a huge toll on her young body.
But her job was done.
The massive gap in the sea would cause a smaller secondary tsunami.
Lilian transformed back into her flame form and retreated behind the breakwater on the island.
Compared to Lilian's brute force, Noah's approach was more refined.
He released dozens of blank cards into the ocean and sealed the surrounding seawater inside them in an instant.
Immediately, several voids appeared in the sea where the water had been.
Though the ocean would quickly rush to fill these gaps, the sudden drop in sea level created by the voids would cause small reverse tsunamis—waves that spread out in all directions. Although these smaller waves were only a few meters high, their numbers made up for their size.
Wave after wave of small tsunamis began spreading outward.
Eventually, these smaller waves collided with the larger tsunami caused by the underwater volcano.
Though the larger tsunami continued to push forward, its strength was gradually reduced by the smaller waves.
By the time the tsunami reached the island, Noah stood atop the 50-meter-high breakwater, observing the wave. It had shrunk to just over 50 meters.
Noah tossed the sealed water cards into the air.
"Release! Flood!"
Tens of millions of cubic meters of seawater rained down from the sky, crashing onto the crest of the tsunami.
Having rested for a moment, Lilian was ready to attack again.
"Roar of the Fire Dragon!"
Fiery dragons shot from her hands, slamming into the weakened wave.
After repeated attacks, the tsunami's height dropped to less than 20 meters as it finally crashed into the breakwater, splitting apart at the V-shaped wall.
With the wave shattered and its strength depleted, Noah stood watching the churning sea. His Conqueror's Haki seemed to evolve through the challenge, becoming stronger and more refined.
By the time the tsunami reached Rum Island, it had lost most of its force. Though there were still waves over 10 meters high, the southwestern coastal residents had already been evacuated, avoiding major casualties.
As for the other areas affected by the tsunami, they would have to fend for themselves.
For now, Noah's strength wasn't enough to completely stop such a massive natural disaster.
The raw power of nature on this blue planet was a terrifying force for ordinary people to face.
