Chapter 27 Star Moon Bar
The playful scuffle with Shen Zuimo had become a daily routine. Although Xiaofan always ended up getting beaten, he managed to take advantage of Shen Zuimo in the process.
It's hard to say what Shen Zuimo was thinking; even knowing Xiaofan's hand would reach his chest, he often let his guard down, giving Xiaofan the opportunity.
Though they knew they should keep their distance, the actions between them were too intimate, deepening their bond bit by bit.
After experiencing so much in just one day, Xiaofan decided it was time to strive for something. The first task was to earn money.
For a high school student, legally, the way to make money is through part-time work, and specifically as a temporary worker.
H City is a bustling metropolis, so finding temporary work isn't difficult, although the earnings aren't much.
At noon, Xiaofan would first help deliver fast food at a nearby quick-service restaurant, since that's the busiest time for such places. The restaurant owner couldn't wish for anything better than someone willing to help with deliveries.
After school in the afternoon, he would continue delivering and handing out flyers. By the end of the day, he could earn seventy to eighty yuan.
At school, Zhang Qiang had been lying low for a few days, avoiding Xiaofan from afar, seemingly scared Xiaofan would challenge him to a fight.
Liu Siyan had asked Xiaofan about the injuries on his face, but Xiaofan didn't tell her about Zhang Qiang causing trouble. Some things are better left unsaid, and it's his own business after all.
Earning seventy to eighty yuan a day was barely enough for two people's daily needs, but certainly not more. So after handing out flyers, Xiaofan continued searching for work he could manage.
That night, the lights were dazzling.
Xiaofan was attracted by a recruitment notice in front of a bar he passed by.
Temporary work, hours from ten at night to two in the morning, one hundred yuan per night, and an extra twenty yuan for each half hour over that time.
That's definitely more than what he could make hustling all day. After thinking for a moment, Xiaofan slowly stepped into the bar.
Star Moon Bar, covering nearly five hundred square meters on four floors.
Upon entering, he was swept away by the raucous music atmosphere. Honestly, Xiaofan wasn't fond of such environments, but for that hundred yuan, he kept moving inside.
On the first floor lobby, there were many tables and chairs set up. Next to the bar was a stage, but since it was still early, there weren't many customers, and the performances hadn't started yet.
"May I get you something?" The bartender at the bar asked kindly upon seeing Xiaofan walk in.
"Oh, no, I'm here for the interview. I saw outside they're hiring temporary workers." Xiaofan hadn't figured out where the interview was, so he thought to ask, but was misunderstood.
"Interview? Oh, third floor," the bartender replied cheerfully.
"Thank you."
On the third floor, there were quite a few young people who looked like thugs coming and going. It felt like such night spots must inevitably have gangsters around.
Xiaofan didn't pay much attention to them. He was searching for the person in charge of the interview.
The interview wasn't complicated; after briefly discussing the work content, they just signed a name, not even needing to show ID. He could cash out with them after his shift.
The work was rather varied, not fixed. He had to help wherever needed, like if the first floor lobby had many guests, he'd help there, and if the second-floor KTV got busy, he'd have to run to the second floor. Serving dishes, pouring drinks, going to the kitchen, etc...
Under the team leader's guidance, Xiaofan changed into his temporary uniform, then started taking orders from guests in the first-floor lobby.
Time slowly slipped away, and more guests arrived. The performances on stage began.
Scantily clad women were everywhere, mostly dressed provocatively. They wore heavy makeup, revealing their thighs and large portions of their chests. Xiaofan refrained from commenting on these women's professions; life isn't easy, and no woman is born wanting to rely on selling her looks or body for a living.
"Hey there, young man, you look unfamiliar. New here? Do you want sister to keep you company?"
"I wouldn't mind your company, but it's my first night at work, so I have no money." Xiaofan replied gracefully to the flirtatious solicitation.
"Hmph, no money, what kind of fun is that." The woman tossed this remark, swayed her big hips, and walked away to continue searching for her next target.
"Whores are heartless," though not entirely true, it doesn't mean they are completely cold-blooded. They've seen too much, numbing their hearts. In such circumstances, money becomes their sole aim.
"Hey, the newbie, the one called Xiaofan, go help out on the fourth floor," the team leader suddenly shouted at the stairs.
"Oh, on my way."
Xiaofan hadn't been to the fourth floor before, so he didn't know what was up there or who was present.
It's the task given by the team leader, so he must comply unconditionally for the sake of the hundred yuan pay.
"Let me tell you, take the drinks in, then wait inside. Inside is our boss, make sure to attend to him well. Absolutely no mistakes, otherwise, you won't get a penny," reminded the team leader before Xiaofan headed to the fourth floor. Xiaofan took note but wasn't nervous. If the person is a big boss, they wouldn't mind errors from a small-time waiter like him, right?
But when Xiaofan entered a room and opened the door, he was immediately overwhelmed by the atmosphere inside.
A sharp killing qi rushed toward him. Inside the private room were only four people: three guys in their early twenties, and a man in his thirties seated on the couch.
Though the man was impeccably dressed, anyone would instantly feel he had a gangster's demeanor.
Xiaofan obediently put down a case of beer and two bottles of liquor, quietly standing to the side.
"Boss, are those Celestial Wolf Gang guys still not coming? We've already waited half an hour," a tall, lanky man impatiently grabbed a beer and deftly flicked it open with a thumb nail.
"Fei, be patient. It's our first time collaborating with them," the middle-aged man replied as he irritably took a cigarette from the table.
For some reason, his lighter failed multiple times.
Xiaofan, noticing this, stepped forward, pulled out a lighter from his uniform, and helped light the cigarette.
With a capable reaction like that, the middle-aged man glanced at Xiaofan and asked, "New here?"
"Yes, temporary worker," Xiaofan replied truthfully while retracting his lighter.
"Smoke?"
"Thanks, I don't."
"Then have a drink."
"Thanks, but I'm still studying, not used to drinking."
"Studying? Studying is great. If our brothers had studied more back then, we wouldn't have made so many mistakes."
After muttering a few words, a knocking sound came. Xiaofan walked over to open the door. For the first time, he sensed that being a thug wasn't as terrifying as in TV and movies. They had their own inner worlds, unlike the bullying guys Zhang Qiang had previously brought.
At least this man, called the boss, showed no airs toward a temporary worker like him.
