Chapter 27: The Brewmaster’s Revelation
Zoe floated in a space neither light nor dark, a void where the concept of time seemed meaningless. The cold seeped into her very essence, a chill that wasn't physical but spiritual. Her mind buzzed with fractured images: the café, her friends, the glowing veins of a zombie, and most persistently, the swirling golden interface of the Brewmaster System.
"Where am I?" she whispered, her voice thin and fragile, as if it could be swallowed whole by the void.
"Oh, Carter. You're not dead if that's what you're asking," the Brewmaster System's voice rang out, dripping with sarcasm. "Though, given your current state, I wouldn't blame you for getting existential."
Zoe blinked, or at least she thought she did. She couldn't feel her body. Her presence in this strange realm was intangible, like a flicker of a shadow caught between two worlds.
"What's happening to me?" she asked. "I can't move. I can't feel anything."
"You're unconscious, technically," the system replied as if explaining something obvious to a child. "Your body is a wreck back in Perkatory, but your mind? Oh, it's here, in what I like to call the Brewmaster Nexus. You're welcome."
"I didn't ask for this," Zoe muttered, the weight of helplessness pressing down on her. "I didn't ask for any of it."
"Oh, of course, you didn't," the system said. "Because mortals never do. Yet here you are, doing better than most. Shall we move on to the part where I enlighten you about the world's end?"
The question hit Zoe like a thunderclap. She had spent countless nights wondering how the world had spiraled into chaos, but there had been no answers, only survival.
"Yes," she said, her voice trembling. "Tell me everything."
"Ah, Carter, if only it were that simple," the system mused, its tone so smug she could practically feel it smirking. "I can't tell you everything. I can share this: the apocalypse was orchestrated by deities."
Zoe's thoughts stumbled over the word. "Deities? Like gods?"
"Ding ding ding! Give the barista a prize," the system said. "Yes, gods. Or, as I call them, the bored, overpowered maniacs in the sky. They decided to make your world their entertainment venue. Zombies, chaos, carnage—it's all part of the show."
"That's sick," Zoe whispered, disgust curling in her stomach.
"Oh, you have no idea," the system quipped. "But not all deities were on board. Some found the whole thing… distasteful. So, they created systems like mine and handed them out to select mortals. You know, to even the playing field. A little deus ex machina for the masses."
Zoe processed this in stunned silence. "So, what were the requirements?"
"If I knew, I'd tell you. Probably," the system replied breezily. "All I know is that you, Zoe Carter, ticked all the right boxes. Not just anyone could activate the Brewmaster System. And as for the deity who designed me? Let's just say they're… not your average god."
Zoe's chest tightened. "Who created you?"
"Now, that's classified," the system said, practically preening. "But I'll throw you a bone. They might grant you an upgrade if you're desperate enough and beg for help. Just saying."
"Beg?" Zoe's voice cracked. "You want me to grovel to some god I've never met? Forget it."
"Suit yourself," the system said with a verbal shrug. "But let's hope you don't regret that choice. Pride's a killer, Carter."
The cold deepened, and suddenly, Zoe was no longer alone in the void. She was watching. Below her, the world took shape: her friends and family fighting for their lives in this apocalypse.
Riley's blade flashed as she fought the intelligent zombie, her movements precise but strained. Ethan stood at her side, his glowing red eye scanning for an opening. Dr. Vance barked orders, his calm demeanor fraying at the edges. Matthew and Jake struggled to flank the creature, their weapons ineffective against its unnatural speed and strength.
The zombie was unlike anything Zoe had ever seen. Its glowing veins pulsed with an eerie light, and its movements were terrifyingly fluid, almost predatory. It anticipated every strike, countering with brutal efficiency. Her friends were being overwhelmed, and she could do nothing but watch.
"No," Zoe whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "Please, no. Don't let them die."
"You can't interfere," the system said, almost lazily. "Not in your current state. But hey, great view, right?"
Zoe's tears floated around her, shimmering like tiny stars in the void. Her heart ached as Riley was thrown against a wall, blood streaking her face. Matthew's cries of frustration echoed as his attacks were shrugged off. Jake's knife was swatted aside like a child's toy. They were losing.
"Help them!" Zoe screamed, her voice shattering the stillness. "I'll do anything! Just don't let them die!"
The system hesitated, milking the pause for all it was worth. "Are you willing to beg, Carter? To truly humble yourself before my creator?"
"Yes!" Zoe sobbed. "Please, I'll do whatever it takes!"
In the void, something shifted. A vast and unknowable presence made itself known. Zoe couldn't see it, but she felt it: a weight, an intelligence far beyond her comprehension. The tears floating around her began to glow brighter.
"Very well," the system said, its smugness dialed up to eleven. "Your desperation has been noted. Let's see how this plays out."
Zoe felt a sudden rush of energy, and for the first time, she could move. Her incorporeal form gathered the glowing tears, each drop pulsing with warmth. Without understanding why, she knew what to do.
She drifted toward Riley, who was struggling to rise, blood dripping from her temple. Zoe cupped her spectral hands, collecting her tears, and guided them to Riley's lips. The moment the liquid touched Riley's mouth, a golden light enveloped her.
Notification: Legendary Soul Brew Unlocked. Ingredient: One mortal's tears. Effect: Strength of spirit beyond mortal limits, enhanced other abilities and systems permanently.
Riley's eyes snapped open, now glowing with the same golden light. She rose to her feet, her movements fluid and powerful. Her blade glimmered as if imbued with divine energy. She looked at the intelligent zombie and took a step back, a determined expression on her face.
"Everyone, grab on," Riley said, her voice steady and commanding.
Ethan, Matthew, Jake, and Dr. Vance didn't hesitate. They each reached for Riley, their hands gripping her arm or shoulder. The intelligent zombie roared, lunging toward them, but Riley didn't wait for it to close the gap.
The golden light around her flared, wrapping the group in a cocoon of energy. In an instant, the world blurred around them. Riley felt the surge of her teleportation ability, stronger and more precise than ever before. The energy pushed against her limits, but she held firm, focusing on the only place she knew would be safe.
In a brilliant flash, they reappeared outside the hospital. The golden glow dissipated as Riley collapsed to her knees, her breaths ragged and her body trembling from the effort.
Zoe watched from the void, her spirit trembling with relief and pride. The system's voice broke through her reverie.
"Congratulations, Carter. You've just made history. And lucky for you, I'm here to remind you of it every step of the way. But don't get too comfortable. This is only the beginning."
As the void began to fade and her consciousness slipped back into her battered body, Zoe clung to one thought: her friends were alive. And she would do whatever it took to keep it that way.
