Chapter 42: Polaris (2)

Chapter 42: Polaris (2)

"Sir, the recent group has returned with enough food for three days. But there was a run-in with the members of that place."

Hearing the words of his assistant, the bespectacled young man dropped his leg from the table and sat up straight.

His light brown hair fluttered in the slight wind seeping in from the windows. It had become a hobby to stare at the open sky as it lost its red hue with each passing day.

The chair squeaked. The man turned to face his assistant.

"Damages?"

"None, it was just a verbal confrontation..."

The assistant's words trailed off at the end.

"But...?"

"The major said that they wouldn't have returned if it devolved into a fight. It's like those brutes have all the ammunition in the world."

A sigh left the man.

"Don't worry much about it," he said. The man stood up from his seat and patted his assistant's shoulder.

"Sir Lewis..."

"It's not going to be long. We just have to find an opening, soon enough, skills and stats will matter much more than guns ever can."

Then, the door to the room swung open and a lady with wild blue hair stepped in. She carried a giant club on her shoulder and donned a fiery grin on her face.

"Lewis! You bastard!"

The assistant immediately bowed as the woman stepped inside Lewis winced in annoyance.

A gleam flickered in his eyes as a window appeared in front of him.

All the information about the person in front revealed itself. Even with the low level of his own Unique Skill, he was able to tell a lot more information about someone than anyone else could.

"Chloe. How can I help you?"

The new entrant, Chloe Bradford, wrapped her hand around Lewis' shoulder.

"That bastard, Philip. He is grating my nerves now."

Chloe pulled Lewis away from the room. Her eyes swept over the assistant.

She brought Lewis away, strolling through the streets of Polaris.

A complex of different buildings and places, all fenced out from any threats. She had fought tooth and nail to make this place at the beginning of the Apocalypse and when all the dead woke up again, the battle had just gotten tougher.

But they had won, Polaris was one of its kind. The fact that she had received multiple rewards from the Apocalypse Keeper stating the same was just more proof.

"Look around," she said. People young and old, survivors of the Apocalypse, walked around. Most of them bowed when Chloe passed by.

All of them were people she had helped in some way or another.

"I have been bearing with that bastard because you said so. But not this time. How do you think our people were caught up by those bastards from that settlement?"

Right then, one of the men standing at the back scoffed at Chloe, spitting on the ground as she passed by.

"This stuff has just increased after you had both of us take the leadership mark. And that he wants to sell us out is not making things better."

Lewis sighed.

"Chloe, just a sword is not enough. We need a shield too, and this entire barrier is held up by Philip Kent. His ideals are different, but you can't deny that he cares about this place."

Chloe sighed.

"He's still running out of control. I am not going to see Polaris fall because of one man's stupid ambition." Chloe let go of Lewis and stared at him.

"Lewis, that bastard listens to you. You know we can't go under those rats from the other settlement."

Lewis nodded.

That the second in command of this entire place was in support of giving the settlement up in front of someone with more guns than god was not good. That they were both wild and barbaric like dogs was just as bad.

"Keep him in control."

"I'll talk with him," said Lewis.

Chloe seemed a little hesitant to leave, but walked away after Lewis walked away to the fence.

People that had just returned ran into their enemies. Enemies that shouldn't have known of their movements.

Someone had to be held responsible for this.

As Lewis reached closer to the fence where the team should have just re-entered, he heard the sound of a distant scream.

His eyes widened.

The screams only grew louder.

Lewis recognized that voice. He ran ahead and stopped in front of the fence.

Only to find the second in command of Polaris, Philip Kent, getting choked by a black-haired man.

A problem unlike any other had made its way toward Polaris.
