OVERLORD: The Second Supreme Being

Chapter 166: Chapter 165: Ambush

General Cade's forces faced a dire situation against the Goblin army. The battle was entirely one-sided, but not a single soldier under Cade's command retreated or fled. This unwavering resolve was a testament to the strength and discipline of Slane Theocracy's most elite unit.

The battle raged on for three grueling hours. Slane Theocracy suffered over 30,000 casualties, while the Empire's forces lost more than 20,000. Despite the Empire's superior weaponry, Slane Theocracy, as humanity's strongest nation, showcased its deep reserves of strength, inflicting significant losses on the Empire.

That night, General Cade convened a strategy meeting. He was fully aware that even a victory in this battle would leave his nation severely weakened, threatening its long-term security.

Among those present were members of the Black Scripture. The Fifth Seat, known as "One Man Army" was absent, as he was scouring the world for new summoned creatures after the ones he had previously commanded were slaughtered by Nana. However, the remaining members of the Black Scripture—aside from the Seventh Seat, Thousand Leagues Astrologer—had all gathered for the meeting.

Cade addressed the group solemnly:

"For the future of the Slane Theocracy, I must ask you to undertake a mission that cannot be publicly acknowledged.

Assassinate General Anri of the Goblin forces. Rumor has it she's merely a common villager with little combat ability. Her death would demoralize the Empire and cripple the Goblin army's leadership. This could force the Empire to cease their advance, buying us critical time.

To ensure your safety, I have arranged for special forces from the Windflower Scripture, Clearwater Scripture, and Ashendust Scripture to support you."

As Cade spoke, the Twelfth Seat of the Black Scripture, codenamed Heaven and Earth, a master assassin, suddenly sensed the presence of another assassin nearby—a professional like himself. His eyes narrowed in suspicion.

He silently left his position and, before long, returned to the conference room with three goblin corpses in tow.

"Who would've thought there would be assassins among the goblin army!" Cade remarked as he looked at the three goblin assassin corpses.

"If they hadn't overheard some important information and exposed themselves, I might not have even noticed them," Heaven and Earth said.

"These goblins aren't very powerful, but their concealment skills are exceptional. General Cade, you must be careful—they might be targeting your life," Heaven and Earth warned.

"I understand. To avoid delays and complications, we'll take action now. Striking just after nightfall will make our attack all the more unexpected."

Under General Cade's orders, the members of the Black Scripture moved out.

The Eleventh Seat, Infinite Magic, cast stealth magic on the group, greatly enhancing their concealment to avoid being detected by the goblin beast riders' wolves.

Taking advantage of the cover of night, they stealthily approached the goblin camp.

The camp was guarded by hundreds of heavily armored goblin infantry, dozens of goblin paladins, and dozens of goblin longbowmen on night watch duty.

"I'll go scout out the goblin general's quarters," Heaven and Earth said. As someone who had reached the Hero Domain through assassin skills, he had great confidence in his ability to remain undetected.

Alone, Heaven and Earth infiltrated the goblin camp.

In the goblin camp, there was an exceptionally ornate tent with a sign hanging above it that read: Grand General's Quarters – No Unauthorized Entry.

Standing guard at the entrance were two goblins dressed peculiarly, wearing red hats and wielding scythes.

They looked like a twisted, demonic version of the Seven Dwarfs.

Heaven and Earth considered the fact that Anri's tent was far from the main gate, and having the others come over would risk exposing their presence. Thus, he decided to kill Anri on his own.

He avoided the front of Anri's tent and silently cut a small slit at the back with his dagger. Through the slit, he saw Anri, truly asleep.

Anri, being an ordinary girl, couldn't endure the prolonged combat and marches. The stress of constantly staying on high alert during battles had completely exhausted her, and she had gone straight to rest upon returning to the camp.

Just as Heaven and Earth was about to tear through the tent and execute a swift kill on Anri, he suddenly sensed a dangerous presence.

A pitch-black dagger was thrust toward the back of Heaven and Earth's neck.

Reacting in time, Heaven and Earth deflected the dagger.

The assailant turned out to be a goblin assassin.

"I am the captain of the Goblin Assassins! If you wish to harm General Anri, you'll have to get past me first."

Before the goblin assassin could finish his declaration, the commotion alerted the red-hatted goblin guards outside, who immediately reacted to the disturbance.

Heaven and Earth managed to force the assassin back but had no time to make his next move before a deadly scythe slashed toward him.

He hurriedly blocked the attack, but the overwhelming strength of the red-hatted goblin sent him flying, tumbling twice before coming to a stop.

"I'm no match for these Red-Hat Goblins!" This thought flashed through Heaven and Earth's mind.

He immediately got to his feet, intending to flee, but another red-hatted goblin suddenly appeared beside him.

The goblin's sharp scythe swung toward him like the reaper's blade.

Driven by a desperate will to survive, Heaven and Earth mustered all his strength to block the deadly strike.

But blocking was all he could do.

The other Red-Hat Goblin's scythe came slicing toward him.

"It's over!" Heaven and Earth thought to himself in despair.

He was caught in a hopeless situation. If he dodged, the scythe in front of him would cleave him in two.

If he didn't dodge, he would still be split in half.

"Six Gods, grant me the power of a miracle!" he prayed in his heart.

But no miracle came. He was cut in half.

The goblin assassin captain did not pursue Heaven and Earth. Instead, he remained stationed at Anri's tent, ensuring her safety. In the aftermath of the battle, additional guards were posted around Anri's tent due to the commotion.

Excluding the two Red-Hat Goblins that killed Heaven and Earth, there were six more Red-Hat Goblins guarding Anli's tent.

Each of these Red-Hat Goblins possessed strength comparable to that of the Kingdom's Warrior Captain, Gazef Stronoff.

Outside the goblin camp, the members of the Black Scripture were still waiting for news from Heaven and Earth.

At that moment, the Goblin Strategist appeared at the entrance of the camp. Of the thirteen total Red-Hat Goblins, eight were stationed with Anri, while the remaining five accompanied the Goblin Strategist.

"Something's not right!" observed Divine Chains, the Ninth Seat of the Black Scripture. The others also sensed the abnormality.

Suddenly, a barrage of fireball spells rained down, carpet-bombing the area where the Black Scripture members were located.

"Magic Shield!" Infinite Magic, the Eleventh Seat, cast a magic barrier to protect everyone from the attack.

Smoke filled the surroundings from the explosions. As soon as the bombardment ended, five Red-Hat Goblins wielding scythes emerged from the smoke.

The Eighth Seat, Myriad Barriers, and the Tenth Seat, Strongest Human, immediately stepped forward to protect the group.

One wielded a massive axe, and the other carried a large shield, blocking the Red-Hats' strikes.

However, the immense power of the attacks forced both of them back a few steps.

"Goblin Arena!" the Goblin Strategist shouted, casting a spell. An arena-like scene materialized beneath the Black Scripture members' feet.

The Goblin Arena spell created a battlefield where the fight could only end with the complete annihilation of one side. No one could leave until either all combatants on one side were dead.

To forcibly break through the arena's confinement, one would need to be at least level 60.

In the Slane Theocracy, only Antilene and Black Scripture Captain had reached level 60—but both of them were already dead.

The five members of the Black Scripture trapped in the Goblin Arena were:

Sixth Seat: Holy Knight (Level 46)

Known as the strongest holy knight, wielding a greatsword. His power easily surpasses that of the Holy Kingdom's Remedios.

Eighth Seat: Myriad Barriers (Level 48)

Known as the "Shield of the Theocracy," he possesses the strongest defensive abilities in the Theocracy.

Ninth Seat: Divine Chains (Level 48)

Wields a pair of chain weapons of divine-level quality (just below world-class items).

Tenth Seat: Strongest Human (Level 53)

Currently the strongest member of the Black Scripture, and the most powerful individual in the Slane Theocracy aside from those with God-Kin lineage.

Eleventh Seat: Infinite Magic (Level 43)

A magic caster who has broken into the Hero Domain of magic, boasting an extraordinary mana pool, though with limited endurance for extended battles.

Their opponents were five goblins, each with strength comparable to Gazef Stronoff (levels ranging from 46 to 48).
