Chapter 17: Chapter 17: Ripples in the Blue
The morning after the storm was eerily calm. The sea stretched out like a mirror, reflecting the pale blue of the sky. Eric stood at the helm of the Marine patrol ship, his sharp gaze sweeping over the horizon. Despite the tranquility, he couldn't shake the weight of the previous night's battle.
The Sea King's roar still echoed in his mind, a reminder of just how fragile their position was in this vast, untamed ocean.
Behind him, the crew worked diligently to repair the damage inflicted by the storm and the creature's attack. Aran's ship sailed close by, its masts silhouetted against the morning light. Nami approached, her boots clicking softly on the deck.
"You're thinking again," she said, crossing her arms.
Eric glanced at her, his smirk faint. "Dangerous habit, isn't it?"
"For you? Definitely," she replied, though her tone was lighter than usual. "The crew's talking about last night. They're calling you a monster."
"Good," Eric said simply.
Nami frowned. "That's not necessarily a compliment."
"It doesn't have to be," Eric replied, his gaze returning to the horizon. "Fear is a powerful tool. If they fear me, they'll follow. And if they follow, we win."
Nami sighed, rubbing her temples. "You make it sound so simple."
"It is," Eric said, though there was a flicker of doubt in his voice.
By midday, the two ships had anchored near a small, uninhabited island. The crew needed rest, and the captains needed a plan. Eric, Nami, and Aran gathered in the patrol ship's captain's cabin, the map of the East Blue spread across the table between them.
Aran leaned back in his chair, his crooked grin firmly in place. "So, what's next, Captain? More Marine ships to raid? Another monster to slay?"
Eric ignored the jab, his finger tracing a route on the map. "We need a base. Somewhere we can regroup, resupply, and plan without constantly looking over our shoulders."
Aran raised an eyebrow. "And where exactly do you think we'll find that? The Marines patrol every island worth a damn in this region."
"There are places even the Marines don't bother with," Eric said, tapping a spot on the map. "This island here—Skull Reef. It's remote, treacherous, and completely uninhabited. Perfect for what we need."
Nami leaned over the map, her brow furrowing. "Skull Reef is dangerous for a reason. The currents around it are unpredictable, and the reefs are like a maze. Even experienced navigators avoid it."
"That's why it's perfect," Eric said, his voice steady. "If it's hard to get to, it's hard to find. And if anyone does try, we'll see them coming long before they arrive."
Aran stroked his chin, his grin fading slightly. "Bold plan. But setting up a base means more than just picking an island. We'll need supplies, manpower, and defenses."
"Then we'll get them," Eric said, his gaze sharp. "We've already proven we can take what we need. Now we just need to do it on a larger scale."
The decision was made. Skull Reef would become their stronghold, the foundation of the Blood Shadow's growing influence in the East Blue. The fleet set sail once more, their course set for the treacherous waters surrounding the island.
As they approached, the sea grew restless. The currents tugged at the ships, threatening to pull them off course. The jagged outlines of the reef loomed in the distance, a labyrinth of stone and coral that seemed to defy navigation.
Nami took the helm, her sharp eyes scanning the waters ahead. "Keep the sails trimmed and follow my lead," she called out, her voice cutting through the tension.
Eric watched her work, his respect for her growing with each command. Despite her earlier skepticism, she handled the challenge with precision and confidence.
"Impressive," he said as she guided the ship through a narrow channel.
"Don't distract me," she replied, though there was a faint smile on her lips.
By the time they reached the island's sheltered cove, the crew was exhausted but relieved. The ships anchored in the calm waters, their hulls creaking as the tension of the journey ebbed away.
Eric stepped onto the sandy shore, his boots sinking slightly into the warm sand. The island was wild and untamed, its dense jungle stretching toward the cliffs that overlooked the sea.
"This'll do," Aran said, joining him. "Plenty of cover, high ground for defenses, and no signs of anyone else. You might be onto something, Captain."
Eric nodded, his gaze sweeping over the landscape. "We'll set up camp here for now. Start small—just enough to keep us safe while we figure out our next steps."
"And when the Marines find us?" Nami asked, her tone sharp.
Eric's smirk returned. "Then we show them why they should've stayed away."
The next few days were spent turning the island into a makeshift base. The crew worked tirelessly, clearing jungle, building shelters, and setting up basic defenses. Nami used her navigation skills to map the surrounding reefs, identifying potential escape routes and choke points.
Eric divided his time between overseeing the work and training the recruits. He pushed them hard, his expectations clear: strength, discipline, and loyalty.
Some rose to the challenge, their determination fueled by the promise of glory. Others struggled, their fear and doubt holding them back.
"You're not going to win them all over," Nami said one evening, as they sat by the fire.
"I don't need to," Eric replied. "I just need the ones who matter."
Nami frowned, her gaze flicking to the recruits practicing nearby. "And what about the ones who don't? What happens to them?"
Eric's expression darkened. "They'll either learn, or they'll fall behind. This world doesn't leave room for the weak."
Nami sighed, shaking her head. "You make it sound so simple."
"It is," Eric said, though his tone was quieter than before.
As the days turned into weeks, the base began to take shape. The crew's morale grew as they saw the progress they were making, their confidence in Eric solidifying.
But beneath the surface, Eric couldn't shake the feeling that their victories had painted a target on their backs. The Marines wouldn't ignore their growing presence forever.
And when the time came, Eric would be ready.
