Chapter 381: Breaking Out of the Circle
Thunder City.
A woman slowly opened her eyes.
"Who... am I?"
The unfamiliar room and blank memory left her feeling confused.
Hiss!
Suddenly, a stabbing pain flashed through her brain.
The woman instinctively covered her head with her hands.
In the next moment, an image flashed through her mind then quickly vanished.
It was of a steel monster glowing with blinding light, coming straight at her, with vague sounds echoing in her ears, followed by endless darkness.
"Miss... it seemed like they called me Miss? Could my name be Miss?"
The woman looked puzzled.
Creek.
Just then, the door suddenly opened, and a bent elderly woman entered the room with a tray.
On the tray, there seemed to be a bowl of herbal medicine.
The old woman adeptly turned her back to the woman, first closing the door, then turning around.
"Ah!"
The old woman was startled by the woman who had sat up on the bed.
The 'Miss' on the bed was also frightened by the woman's reaction, shrinking to the bed corner and asking nervously.
"Who, who are you?"
The elderly woman, who had recovered, looked at the woman regaining her senses, her body trembling slightly.
"Qin Er, you've finally woken up!"
Before 'Qin Er' could react, the old woman had already set down the tray, dashed towards her, and hugged her, with tears streaming from the corners of her eyes.
"Qin Er... is my name Qin Er? Do you know who I am?"
The woman asked nervously.
Upon hearing this, the old woman couldn't hold back her emotions any longer.
"Qin Er, my poor daughter, do you not even remember your mother? What are we going to do, my poor child!"
Mother?
Is she my mother?
Qin Er still felt strange, but she couldn't pinpoint what was odd, everything just seemed unfamiliar, all of it.
Once the elderly woman calmed down a bit, Qin Er began to inquire about her situation.
It turned out she was not some Miss, but an ordinary pharmacy assistant.
Because of her looks, she managed to retain many customers, worked at the pharmacy, and had a decent income, only somewhat better than the average person.
According to the old woman, Qin Er had always been investing in herself, studying various knowledge in music, chess, calligraphy, and painting, spending money on learning.
The old woman always thought her daughter was wasting money until one day, a young master proposed unexpectedly, then she realized her daughter was planning a big move.
She was hoping the family could rise to power relying on her daughter, but her daughter rejected the wealthy young master's proposal, angering both her and the old man to the point of almost entering their coffins early.
"Sell for a high price, and an even higher!"
Though the old woman did not explicitly state, it seemed this was the implication of her words.
Qin Er frowned slightly; though it was the old woman speaking, while listening to 'her own' story, she just felt that she simply wanted to escape this environment and become better, rather than seeking to sell for a higher price.
The old woman's lips were quickly drying as she recalled past bits and pieces, always unable to resist embellishing and adding more.
"Mother..."
As soon as the word 'Mother' came out, Qin Er felt extremely unfamiliar and awkward, as if she had never said this word in her life.
But Qin Er still suppressed the doubts in her heart and asked.
"Mother, if that's the case, our life should be stable, so why did I suddenly lose my memory?"
Hearing this, the old woman became frustrated.
"Who knows what's up with you, just a few days ago, you had just participated in the Bo Family's maid selection, stood out from so many people, and then fainted suddenly upon returning home."
"And that faint lasted for days. If it wasn't for your mother hiring a doctor, decocting medicine for you every day and feeding you, you would have lost your life with that frail body!"
With that, the old woman greedily looked at you.
"Qin Er, you have no idea; caring for you these days has been like pouring money water down the drain. The family funds are running low—could you take some money from your side to help out? The medicine the old doctor prescribed is expensive; if you don't wake soon, your mother won't be able to afford it anymore."
Funds?
Is she talking about money?
But... Qin Er has no idea where she put her money.
She dumbly shook her head, immediately feeling a bout of dizziness.
The old woman quickly caught her, then brought over the herbal tonic from the tray to feed Qin Er.
Qin Er's heart was moved, but she was unaware that the medicinal materials in the tonic were quite cheap, some even mixed with dirt, like weeds picked up off the roadside, ground together messily.
The only thing mildly nutritious was the bit of congee residue at the bottom of the bowl.
"Mother, I'm feeling a bit better; I'd like to go out and have a look."
"Sure, getting some fresh air should do you good."
Supported by her mother out the door, Qin Er's sense of unfamiliarity grew stronger.
Because everything in front of her was starkly contrasting with the image flashing through her mind.
In front of her lay a shabby courtyard, with the worn, uneven mud ground bearing traces of footsteps.
Yet in the flash of memory, besides the steel monster, the ground was so clean, giving off a particularly aesthetic feeling overall.
"Qin Er? Qin Er!"
The old woman's voice pulled her back to reality.
"Did anything come back to you? Like where you might have put the silver taels you earned?"
Looking at the old woman's eager appearance, Qin Er instinctively felt a slight discomfort.
But she thought of how her life was saved by the old woman; without her during the unconscious days, with no food or care, she would have died, so she suppressed that discomfort and spoke softly.
