Chapter 8: Chapter 8: Don’t Come Any Closer
The trigger rate of Super Crit was reduced tenfold, but its effect was amplified by a hundredfold, resulting in an overall gain exactly ten times that of a regular crit.
'However, that 0.1% trigger rate…' Jiang Kai felt like he was just being handed empty promises.
"Well, at least this is a second talent. It's better than having none." Jiang Kai muttered.
Everything happened too suddenly. Lowering his arms, he still felt like he was dreaming.
The transformation using defective materials was a success.
Currently, there wasn't any online information about the Gambler class—it was completely new.
Even within the same class, occupational talents varied. Since there weren't any other Gamblers to compare with, Jiang Kai had no way of knowing how his talents measured up.
From what he could see, Double Down seemed incredibly strong: rewards and penalties were doubled, with a small chance of triggering Super Double Down.
"This is way too on-brand for a Gambler." Jiang Kai sighed. "But the penalties of a class talent are harsher than the rewards. For example, dying logs you out of the game. Not only do you lose a ton of equipment and experience, but you also can't log back in for a month. If I die once and trigger Super Double Down on a penalty… I'm done for."
Ten months without logging in after a Super Double Down penalty? The thought alone was terrifying.
"Damn, this is really playing with fire!"
After a moment of daze, Jiang Kai couldn't help but chuckle.
"Why overthink it? The fact that I successfully changed classes is already a blessing."
"Double Down, huh? Fine, I'll take the gamble."
Calming down, Jiang Kai began checking his current state.
The Venomspike Boar's spike was still stuck in his butt, his legs were paralyzed, and, most embarrassingly, his only pair of shorts was full of holes.
As for the shorts? Forget about it. Any newbie in a life-or-death crisis wouldn't be faring much better.
The good news was the venom from the boar's spike wasn't spreading. After some time, the paralysis in his legs might wear off.
Thanks to his improved attributes, Jiang Kai's overall condition was decent:
His arms were stronger, his stamina abundant, and his mind clear.
Gritting his teeth, he yanked the spike out, then looked up at the cliff.
Standing at the edge of the cliff was the Venomspike Boar itself, its amber eyes fixed on him.
Jiang Kai shivered.
'That thing still hasn't given up. Tch!'
The boar circled near the cliff edge, seemingly searching for a way down. After a while, it turned and disappeared into the forest above.
Jiang Kai was sure it was looking for another route to reach him .
"This thing won't let me go? Fine, wait until my legs recover, and I'll deal with you." Jiang Kai shouted angrily.
He considered tossing the spike away but hesitated. The boar's venom spike might no longer be poisonous, but it was sturdier than regular wood—more like a steel rod.
"Better keep this steel spike."
In his current state, traveling on land was impossible. His only option was the river in front of him.
The river was the only way to escape the boar.
Jiang Kai found a piece of driftwood by the riverbank, dragged it into the water, and held onto it as he floated downstream.
The icy river water drenched him, making him choke and gasp. Bobbing along with the driftwood, he was swept rapidly downriver.
The river's direction was roughly parallel to his destination, but Jiang Kai couldn't worry about that now. Surviving came first.
[Trial for Newcomers: Day 1, 7:40 PM]
The cold river water sapped his strength quickly. Feeling the chill overtaking him, Jiang Kai paddled to shore.
"There's no way that thing followed me this far!" Jiang Kai sat by the bank, cautiously observing his surroundings.
The trial zone at night was even more terrifying than during the day.
He didn't dare start a fire. Some beasts feared firelight, but others—like the Third-Ranked Newbie Killer, the Human-Faced Beast—were drawn to it.
That thing's appearance alone could scare someone half to death.
Exhausted, cold, hungry, and still partially paralyzed in his left leg, Jiang Kai was on edge, flinching at every rustle.
Finding a rocky hollow near the riverbank, he leaned against the stone wall to rest.
After a day of fleeing, Jiang Kai had a much more grounded understanding of the Newbie Trial.
"So this is the Newbie Trial… If I hadn't changed classes and boosted my stats at the critical moment, I'd already be out of the game."
'No wonder the trial's pass rate is so low.'
Half a day of running had left him dead tired. He fought to stay awake, repeatedly reminding himself not to fall asleep.
Just as he was reaching his limit, a high-pitched scream pierced the air in the distance.
"Someone?" Jiang Kai snapped to attention, his drowsiness vanishing.
Logically, no newbie would scream so loudly in a dangerous situation—it would only attract more predators.
Jiang Kai hesitated. He didn't want to meddle in others' affairs, but the scream felt oddly familiar…
Gritting his teeth, he grabbed a wooden stick and hobbled toward the source of the noise.
"The sound came from nearby." Jiang Kai scanned his surroundings carefully.
Suddenly, a commotion came from his left—a loud rustling sound.
"They ran that way." Jiang Kai immediately followed.
Soon, he hid among the trees and spotted a clearing ahead where two massive shadows were locked in combat!
"Don't come any closer. Aaah!" A newbie screamed hoarsely, punching one of the shadows and sending it flying.
The creature slammed into several trees, snapping three or four as thick as bowls.
Jiang Kai's eyes widened at the scene.
Under the moonlight, he could make out the combatants. One was the notorious Human-Faced Beast, a predator all newbies feared. Its unmistakable form was seared into his memory.
The beast was 2.7 meters long, its grotesque human-like face twisted into a perpetual, creepy grin.
But what shocked Jiang Kai more was the newbie who had just punched the beast—a figure he knew all too well.
"Zhuzi?"
Indeed, the earlier high-pitched scream had come from him.
Most people wouldn't yell like that in danger—it was suicidal. But Zhuzi was different. His timid nature, combined with the beast's grotesque face, must have scared him senseless, triggering that scream.
The problem was, how could Zhuzi—despite his strength—send a 500-600 kg beast flying with one punch?
A possibility dawned on Jiang Kai.
'
This guy… could he have changed classes too?'
The fight continued, with Zhuzi covered in wounds.
The Human-Faced Beast seemed equally stunned. Its prey, previously screaming nonstop, had suddenly retaliated with terrifying force.
Enraged, the beast lunged again.
"Don't come any closer. You're scaring me to death!" Zhuzi wailed, rushing forward. He mounted the beast and unleashed a flurry of punches, each strike echoing like thunder.
The beast's defense was formidable. Despite Zhuzi's relentless assault, it showed no signs of backing down.
Raising its long neck, the beast took advantage of Zhuzi's exposed back and bit down on his shoulder.
From the shadows, Jiang Kai watched anxiously.
The situation was dire. The beast's bite strength alone could kill Zhuzi, and if they didn't escape soon, more predators would arrive.
Clutching the steel spike, Jiang Kai gritted his teeth and hopped forward on one leg.
