Coming out of the dark alley, Jiang Kai glanced around as if searching for someone.
Soon, a tall figure emerged from the shadows.
Yuan Zhu had been waiting for him there.
Even if they disagreed sometimes, Jiang Kai knew that guy would never leave him behind.
"Did you get the materials?" Yuan Zhu saw Jiang Kai's expression and guessed it was good news.
Jiang Kai grabbed Yuan Zhu, "Let's talk back home."
After leaving the alley and putting some distance between them, Jiang Kai finally told Yuan Zhu about buying the materials.
"There were really defective materials?" Yuan Zhu's eyes widened in disbelief.
Jiang Kai grinned. "I'd heard that some of the first players who joined Tianzhi lived in the Western District, but I didn't think I'd actually be able to find any."
"But even if you have defective materials, we still don't know what the outcome will be," Yuan Zhu said worriedly.
Jiang Kai sighed softly. The more he thought about it, the more uncertain he felt.
"No point overthinking it now. If we're going to gamble, let's go all in. I've got no other choice."
"By the way, if you're planning to sell that certificate, you better get up early tomorrow," Jiang Kai reminded Yuan Zhu.
Yuan Zhu hung his head. "Jiang Kai, are you mad at me? We said we'd go to Tianzhi together, buy the defective materials together, but in the end…"
Jiang Kai laughed, giving Yuan Zhu a hearty slap on the back. "Am I that petty? Besides, I just found out myself that defective materials are almost nonexistent now. We're lucky to have even one set."
Hearing this, Yuan Zhu felt a bit better.
Unknowingly, the two reached the old city's shantytown district, where they parted ways to return home.
---
As Yuan Zhu approached his home, he noticed something moving in the shadows by the firewood stack near his door.
The sight scared him stiff, his towering frame shrinking into a ball.
"Could it be a wild beast…" Yuan Zhu muttered shakily, staring wide-eyed at the moving shadow.
In the Beast God Era, the term "wild beast" had become synonymous with destruction and death.
However, Jiangzhong City had steel walls and a strong military presence. A beast sneaking in was unlikely.
If this were anywhere else, Yuan Zhu wouldn't have stuck around to investigate. But this was his home, and his mother was inside!
Thinking of his mother's safety, Yuan Zhu mustered his courage and edged closer step by step.
It looked like… a human figure!
"It's… it's you…" The figure's eyes turned toward Yuan Zhu, recognizing him first and speaking with difficulty.
The voice startled Yuan Zhu.
But after saying those words, the figure fell silent.
After waiting a long time, Yuan Zhu cautiously crept closer.
Under the moonlight, he finally saw the person's face clearly.
"Huh? Isn't this the guy who was being hunted in the dark alley?"
"Oh my god, don't tell me he's dead!"
---
Jiang Kai's home was a run-down single-story house, barely ten square meters, where he, his older brother Jiang Lan, and younger sister Jiang Ying squeezed together. When Jiang Ying was little, it wasn't a big deal, but now that she was grown, Jiang Lan had hung up an old sheet to divide the room.
This partition made the already cramped space feel even smaller.
It was past 11 p.m., but the dim candlelight still flickered in the room.
Jiang Lan worked three jobs and wasn't home yet, while Jiang Ying hadn't gone to bed either.
When Jiang Kai pushed the door open, he saw a ponytailed girl sitting by the wooden table near the window, studying under the flickering candlelight.
"Yingzi, still up?" Jiang Kai asked softly.
Hearing the sound, Jiang Ying turned around, frowning as soon as she saw him. "Bro, why are you home so late?"
Jiang Kai grinned, knocking her lightly on the head. "What, do I need to report to you if I go on a date? And why are you still up?"
Jiang Ying slapped his hand away, scowling. "A date? With Yuan Zhu?"
Jiang Kai choked, rolling his eyes at her. "Me? Dating Yuan Zhu? Where do you even get these ideas?"
Jiang Ying frowned. "You've got the rookie trial tomorrow afternoon, and you're out this late. Why aren't you resting?"
"It's in the afternoon. Plenty of time," Jiang Kai said, tossing his jacket onto his bed.
Jiang Ying sighed, looking exasperated. "Ugh, you're like the emperor not worried about a burning eunuch!"
She pulled a card from the drawer and handed it to him. "Here, big brother left this for you before work. He said the trial is too hard for ordinary families like ours."
"Too bad you can't bring equipment to the rookie trial. All you can carry is a data wristband, and we can't afford anything high-end. This is just a basic model."
Jiang Kai's eyes widened when he saw the card. On it was a simple digital watch labeled "Fearless Data Wristband" and the brand name "Golden Compass" printed below, along with a barcode.
"This thing costs 3,000 Alliance credits! Where did big brother get that kind of money?" Jiang Kai exclaimed.
Jiang Ying looked a little embarrassed. "It wasn't that expensive. There was a sale—only 2,999. We used some savings, big brother borrowed some, and I made some money tutoring and recycling materials."
Hearing this, Jiang Kai jumped up in anger. "How much can you even make recycling? And who did you tutor? Was it at Huang Hao's house?"
Jiang Ying quickly lowered her head, stammering, "N-no…"
Her reaction made it obvious she was lying.
"You know his dad's no good! Last time, he got handsy with you. If I hadn't caught him, who knows what he'd have done. And you still went back!"
"Bro, don't be mad…" Jiang Ying said softly.
"How can I not be mad? That man's scum, and so is his family. You can't possibly think Huang Hao is serious about studying!"
"I made him agree to study at school, and he kept his word," Jiang Ying mumbled. "The rookie trial is so hard. Even if you're talented, the gap in resources is too big. I just wanted to help. Once you have the wristband, I won't deal with them anymore."
Seeing her pitiful expression, Jiang Kai's anger softened.
Jiang Ying had always been a top student—she couldn't be unaware of Huang Hao's true nature. She'd done it all for him.
Everyone else said the rookie trial's success rate was almost zero.
Yet Jiang Lan and Jiang Ying had never objected to Jiang Kai's decision. They gave everything to support him.
Jiang Kai sighed, patting his sister's head. "Alright, it's late. Go to bed."
After she went to sleep, Jiang Kai stood by their bunk bed.
Big brother was short but always slept on the bottom to avoid waking anyone when he came home late.
Jiang Kai carefully straightened his brother's blanket, then lifted the mattress to find a stack of medical records.
He remembered discovering them four months ago when he'd overheard the doctor's ultimatum during a secret visit:
Kidney failure. Jiang Lan needed a transplant or artificial organs within six months.
None of them were blood-related, so a transplant was out of the question. And the cost of artificial organs? 3 million credits, with 800,000 upfront.
Four months had passed. Jiang Lan had two months left.
Under the medical records, Jiang Kai found a letter.
It was Jiang Lan's will, addressed to him and Jiang Ying.
---
Reading it, Jiang Kai's vision blurred with tears.
He carefully put the letter and records back.
Their home was so small they couldn't even properly hide things.
"What are you doing? Go to sleep!" Jiang Ying mumbled from the other side of the partition.
"Yeah, yeah, going to bed. You're annoying! And stay away from Huang Hao!" Jiang Kai snapped.
"Got it! You're the annoying one!"
Lying in bed, Jiang Kai stared at the ceiling.
He wouldn't tell Jiang Ying about their brother. He wouldn't tell Jiang Lan about her.
But deep down, he made a vow:
No matter what, I'll change our family's fate.
Under the covers, he clenched his fist.
"I will pass the rookie trial!"
