Chapter 14: Chapter 14: A Wave of Experience Approaches
"We couldn't find out anything about Jiang Kai. The Golden Compass Corporation has shut down many functions of the Fearless Watch, even the main server. They just haven't informed the users," Professor Li said, shaking his head.
"Got it… I'll go investigate this person." After speaking, Su Lanlan glanced at Uncle Li's computer screen again. At this point, she could basically confirm that Nuannuan and the others had already escaped.
———
Su Nuannuan had finished treating Yuan Zhu's injuries. He was still unconscious, but fortunately, there was no threat to his life.
However, Su Nuannuan herself was also seriously injured. Her shoulder was a bloody mess, and she couldn't apply medicine to herself.
Jiang Kai walked over and said flatly, "I'll help you."
"Why are you still trying to take advantage of me?" Su Nuannuan frowned at Jiang Kai.
Jiang Kai didn't answer. He simply smiled faintly and half-forcibly took the medicine bottle from her.
"I thought you would leave on your own before, but I didn't expect you to jump down. I didn't realize you were braver than average girls," Jiang Kai said while carefully applying the medicine.
At this moment, Jiang Kai no longer had that previously lecherous look.
Su Nuannuan gradually lowered her guard and forced a smile. "I actually thought you'd run. Lucky you didn't, or I'd really look down on you."
"Tch." Jiang Kai snorted. "Do I seem like such a coward to you?"
"Besides, since we planned to level up here, running into situations like this should've been expected. The human-faced beasts aren't even the strongest. If we can't handle two of them, we might as well disband early."
"The medicine is applied. There's not much left, though. You'll need to make more on the way," Jiang Kai said, handing back the remaining medicine.
"Do you know something?" Su Nuannuan asked out of the blue.
"Huh?"
"After this battle, I have even more confidence in our team." Su Nuannuan looked at Jiang Kai with determined eyes. "We will definitely complete the trial."
Jiang Kai smiled faintly. "Not 'definitely'—it's a must. Get some rest."
As the only uninjured member of the team, Jiang Kai naturally took on the role of guarding the camp. At the same time, he analyzed their current situation.
"This baiting strategy is too risky. One fight, just a few experience points, and two people got hurt." Jiang Kai muttered. "Tomorrow, we need a new strategy—take the initiative."
"And this leveling speed is way too slow. I need to think of something."
Fortunately, Jiang Kai and his team weren't too unlucky. Or perhaps his theory was right: most of the beasts had gone after the larger groups. By late night, they finally made it through safely.
In the morning, Yuan Zhu opened his eyes and, seeing Jiang Kai and Su Nuannuan, exclaimed, "I'm not dead yet?"
"Nope," Jiang Kai replied with a smile. "How are your injuries?"
Yuan Zhu checked his waist and stood up, moving around a bit. "Still hurts a little, but much better. Nuannuan, your healing skills are amazing."
Su Nuannuan smirked proudly. "Of course! Healing speed increased by 30%. It's way more useful in actual combat."
Yuan Zhu nodded approvingly, though his stomach suddenly growled loudly.
Embarrassed, he chuckled. "Let's eat something first." Then he pulled out a card from the edge of his leather pants. "I caught a Ghost Star Mountain Rat."
"What? You had this the whole time?" Jiang Kai stared at him in disbelief.
Yuan Zhu shrank back. "It's hard to catch these things. I was saving it for a critical moment. After all those battles, we really need it now. Enough talk—let's eat!"
The Ghost Star Mountain Rat was about the size of a housecat, but even that wasn't enough to satisfy Yuan Zhu's appetite.
One rat fed all three of them, but Yuan Zhu alone ate three-quarters of it.
As they ate, Jiang Kai occasionally fell into deep thought while holding his piece of roasted rat meat.
Once they'd replenished their energy, the three quickly moved to a new location.
On the way, Jiang Kai said to his teammates, "Have you heard of snake dens?"
Su Nuannuan immediately nodded. "Of course—Chameleon Ground Snakes' dens. The females hunt, and the males guard the nest. Usually, there are eight to fifteen snakes in a single den."
"But their nests are well-hidden, often on smooth cliffs. Even if you find one by chance, you can't reach it."
"And if you're attacked multiple times, unless you have powerful anti-venom potions, regular antidotes won't work fast enough."
Jiang Kai nodded. "I might be able to climb the cliff with my agility. And we already have anti-venom potions."
"The key is finding the nest."
Yuan Zhu frowned. "Yeah, but how?"
Jiang Kai explained, "Ground snakes are highly aggressive and will attack players. But they're too small to eat humans; their main food is animals like mountain rats."
Yuan Zhu suddenly understood. "You want to find the snake den?"
"But Ground snakes are experts at camouflage. Tracking them is nearly impossible."
Jiang Kai grinned. "We might not be able to track the snakes, but we can track mountain rat corpses, right? Nuannuan, your watch can lock onto personal items, right?"
Nuannuan nodded. "Yes, it can."
"Wow, rich people…" Yuan Zhu sighed, shaking his head.
After confirming, Jiang Kai assigned tasks. "Yuan Zhu, let's catch a few more mountain rats and trade them to Nuannuan. We'll use the rats to find the snake den."
Mountain rats were nimble, but their nests weren't hard to find. They were usually hidden in large dead tree trunks.
The three quickly hunted down five mountain rats and handed them all to Nuannuan.
Once Nuannuan designated the rats as her personal items, her watch could track their locations within a certain range.
In a dense forest, Jiang Kai tapped the ground with a branch for about two minutes before climbing into a tree. He left one of the mountain rats' corpses on the ground.
Soon, before they noticed anything unusual, a green shadow flashed past. When they looked again, the rat's body was gone.
"Nuannuan!" Jiang Kai immediately looked at her.
Nuannuan checked her watch and found the previously marked rat corpse moving southwest.
"The tracking range is 400 meters. Let's not get too close," Su Nuannuan suggested.
"Good. When it's within 300 meters, we'll follow. Otherwise, it'll notice us," Jiang Kai said.
Ground snakes had limbs and were extremely quick when attacking. But without enemies and while carrying heavy prey, their movement was slower. The trio quietly followed.
After some tracking, the marked target led them to a cliff. There, they found a hole about half a meter wide near the top of the cliff.
The cliff, however, was smoother than expected, offering few handholds. Climbing it seemed nearly impossible.
As Jiang Kai was contemplating how to scale the 30-40 meter cliff, over a dozen snakeheads suddenly poked out from the hole.
They swarmed out of the den, slithering down the cliff toward them. As they moved, their bodies turned the same white-gray color as the cliff.
But at this point, Jiang Kai's team could clearly see their movements despite the camouflage.
Nuannuan glanced at her teammates. "Looks like we forgot—Ground snakes are highly aggressive. They won't let us near their den."
Jiang Kai smiled faintly. "In that case, we'll just have to accept this wave of experience."
