Chapter 12: Chapter 12: The Downside of Teaming Up
In a dense forest within the beginner's trial zone, Yuan Zhu leaned against a thick tree trunk, minimizing the chance of being ambushed from behind, while rhythmically tapping the ground with a small stick.
Above him, two figures were perched on a tree branch, concealed by the trunk.
The best hunters often appear as prey.
And at this moment, Zhuzi was the prey.
Jiang Kai and Su Nuannuan were vigilantly observing their surroundings. After all, they weren't sure whether Zhuzi's baiting would attract a Chameleon Ground Snake or some other wild beast.
The rhythmic tapping echoed through the quiet and dark forest—soft but persistent.
Suddenly, a black shadow darted out from the ground beside Zhuzi at incredible speed, sinking its fangs into his thigh.
Although Zhuzi had mentally prepared himself for this, his nerves failed him. Seeing the black venomous snake before him, he fell to the ground on his rear.
He wanted to scream but quickly covered his mouth, his eyes wide with terror.
At this moment, a figure leapt down from the tree, rolled upon landing, and drove a steel spike straight into the snake's head with pinpoint accuracy.
[You have killed a Chameleon Ground Snake. Gained 1 XP.]
[Acquired: Chameleon Ground Snake corpse (can be dissected).]
Seeing his stats update, Jiang Kai remained composed.
Once a Ground Snake is discovered, it's much easier to kill than a Human-Faced Beast.
With Su Nuannuan's antidote on hand, the snake's venom was no longer a threat to them.
Jiang Kai picked up the loot, now transformed into a card, and turned to check on Zhuzi.
"You okay?"
"Thank goodness for the antidote. No real issues... but this thing looks so disgusting. Jumping out like that almost gave me a heart attack." Zhuzi stammered, still shaken.
Jiang Kai wasn't surprised by Zhuzi's reaction, but Su Nuannuan couldn't hold back her laughter.
"Zhuzi, you're such a big guy, yet so timid."
Zhuzi frowned. "Who said I'm timid? Why don't you try it? It's genuinely terrifying."
Su Nuannuan snorted, "Alright then, next time I'll do it."
"By the way, Jiang Kai, dissect the Ground Snake's corpse. I can use its venom to create anti-venom potions. That'll make the snake's venom completely ineffective against us."
Before long, Su Nuannuan distributed the potions to Jiang Kai and Zhuzi and drank one herself.
"This time, I'll be the bait," Su Nuannuan volunteered, giving Zhuzi a deliberate, challenging glance.
Ground Snakes are highly sensitive to vibrations. Within minutes, another Ground Snake appeared.
Their camouflage abilities were exceptional, and their sudden strikes were nearly impossible to defend against.
Despite being prepared, Su Nuannuan was still bitten.
This Ground Snake launched from beneath her feet, and as luck would have it, its fangs sank directly into her lower chest.
Although she wore a beast-hide bandeau, it was a hastily crafted item with loose bindings at the bottom.
"You filthy beast!" Su Nuannuan clutched her wounded left chest, her face flushed red, cursing the snake furiously.
The Ground Snake, having struck, quietly observed its prey, awaiting the venom to take effect.
Strangely, Jiang Kai hadn't acted yet.
Up in the tree, Zhuzi stared wide-eyed at Jiang Kai.
"That bite was spot on. In situations like this, aren't you supposed to suck out the venom?"
Jiang Kai nodded seriously. "I'm worried the freshly-made antidote might not be fully effective…"
After a brief exchange, Jiang Kai remembered his role, leapt down from the tree, and swiftly approached the Ground Snake, killing it with a single stab.
Picking up the loot, he looked worriedly at Su Nuannuan. "Nuannuan, just to be clear, I mean nothing inappropriate by this, but are you 100% sure your antidote works?"
Su Nuannuan clutched her chest tightly, glaring at Jiang Kai. "I think... it should work."
"Sounds like you're not entirely certain. Do you need me to help treat your wound? It'd be safer that way."
Su Nuannuan's eyes darted as she picked up on Jiang Kai's insinuation. She immediately shouted, "No!"
"Really?" Jiang Kai asked, genuinely concerned.
"Absolutely not!" Su Nuannuan stomped her foot angrily, raising her voice.
Jiang Kai remained composed. "Alright then. But if you feel unwell or need help, let me know anytime. We're teammates—I won't hesitate to assist."
Su Nuannuan felt like facepalming. She knew exactly what was going through Jiang Kai's mind.
"I said no already! You men—what's with your constant weird thoughts." Su Nuannuan scolded, though she wasn't truly upset. "How much XP do we have now?"
Switching topics, Jiang Kai replied, "Only 4 points. Leveling up is so slow."
"No rush. If we exclude danger, it only takes two days to get from the trial zone to Huaxia City," Su Nuannuan said. "Once it's daylight, we can hunt beasts that offer more XP."
"For now, let's move to a different area. Staying in one spot is too risky."
Jiang Kai nodded, called for Zhuzi, and the three set off immediately.
Not long after, they noticed movement among the trees.
Before they could react, a massive shadow lunged straight at Su Nuannuan.
Zhuzi turned and instinctively screamed, "Ah! A ghost!"
Jiang Kai reacted swiftly, shoving Su Nuannuan aside. The two rolled in opposite directions, narrowly avoiding the attack.
"It's a Human-Faced Beast! Zhuzi, hold your ground."
Even though it was Zhuzi's second encounter with a Human-Faced Beast, he hadn't overcome his fear. Despite trembling uncontrollably, he still hurled his massive frame at the beast.
Su Nuannuan, now on her feet, pulled out her wrist device.
A line of text appeared:
[Ghost Star Long-Neck Human-Faced Beast. Length: 2.9 meters. Physical Assessment: Strength 16, Constitution 18, Agility 12, Spirit: N/A]
"Zhuzi, be careful!"
Jiang Kai also glanced at his wrist device, which displayed only one word:
[Beast: Dangerous]
This highlighted the difference between the "SkyEye" and the "Fearless" model.
The Human-Faced Beast, despite being Level 1, had incredibly high attributes compared to others of its kind.
Even with his Martial Artist profession and Qi attack bonuses, Zhuzi struggled to hold his ground.
Knowing Zhuzi couldn't handle it alone, Jiang Kai gripped his steel spike, focused entirely on the beast.
This was going to be a tough fight.
Just as Jiang Kai was calculating his next move, he heard a rustling sound nearby.
Turning his head, he saw a twisted, childlike face emerge from the bushes—a grotesque mix of a crying and laughing expression. The sight of its sharp teeth and drooling mouth was bone-chilling.
It was another Human-Faced Beast.
A second one.
