Chapter 24: Chapter 24: Windmill Village
"That brat really thinks that just because he defeated King Bear, he can challenge my authority as Admiral? How arrogant!"
"Brother, just observe the situation for now. Third Brother has already been sent to Impel Down. I don't want you to get captured too. Once we deal with him, we'll take you both to the Grand Line before the Marines realize what's happening!"
"Brother, is that true? But I'm about to get promoted, and I'm worried…"
"Hmph! Gasparade, my good second brother! How much can the Marines really earn? I've already found a way out for us. When the time comes, we'll capture Fishmen and sell them to the Celestial Dragons! We'll make a big profit!"
"I understand, Brother. I'll prepare everything right away. As for Buggy, I'll send my subordinates to take care of him. We'll solve him soon!"
"Good! Well done! Hang up now, I have more things to handle."
After hanging up, Admiral Crete's face darkened as he turned to Kuro.
"Kuro, I have a task for you. Get in touch with the Baroque Works people and have them cooperate with me. The price is negotiable! Although I don't believe that Karl brat can beat me, his background is too troublesome. I mustn't underestimate him."
"Understood. I'll contact them right away."
Kro adjusted his glasses with a cold smile.
What a coward!
Meanwhile, Karl did not head straight back to Loguetown. Instead, he made a stop at Windmill Village.
Although Garp had left, Rouge was still here, and Karl planned to visit her.
"Belmer, you all stay on the ship. I'll be right back."
With that, Karl made his way to Windmill Village.
At first, the villagers were surprised to see a Marine ship, but once they saw that Karl had returned, they immediately greeted him with warmth.
"Haha, Karl! You finally decided to come back!"
"It's been so many years! You've finally returned! Let me see you, boy!"
"Look at you, Karl! You've grown taller!"
"Big Brother Karl is so handsome! I want to have a kid with him!"
"He's mine, you little brat!"
"He's not yours! Big Brother Karl is mine! Aren't you into dragons? Go find him!"
"What's a boy like you doing here? Go away! I'm confessing to Big Brother Karl!"
The villagers of Windmill Village excitedly chatted amongst themselves, excited about Karl's return.
Feeling the warmth of the villagers, Karl couldn't help but feel a bit embarrassed.
Although he had grown up in the Marine Headquarters, he frequently visited Windmill Village with Garp. He came three or four times a year, so he was familiar with everyone here.
Especially Makino, who stood quietly at the back, looking at Karl with a mix of anger and frustration. When their eyes met, she haughtily lifted her head.
"Everyone, could you please calm down? Your enthusiasm is making me not know how to respond."
Karl said with a wry smile, and the villagers quickly noticed his discomfort, stepping back a few paces.
Only a few girls remained around Karl, starry-eyed, but he ignored them and walked directly toward Makino.
"Makino, it's been a while. Did you miss me?"
"Hmph! Why would I miss you?"
Makino crossed her arms, her tone full of pride.
The current Makino was different from the one in the original story. Due to her close relationship with Karl, she had become a bit more tsundere and proud, though still shy underneath it all.
"Ah, looks like Karl's a perfect match for Makino-nee!"
"Ugh, I lost again! Damn it!"
"Haha, I won again! Pay up! Hurry!"
The children around them, who had been enthusiastic about Karl's return, now started dividing the money.
Seeing how skilled they were at this, Karl's face darkened. He grabbed one child by the collar.
"What's going on here? You're learning to gamble at this age?!"
"Big Brother Karl, don't be mad! We were just playing! We didn't really gamble..."
The child looked up at Karl, pleading, while the others had already disappeared.
Seeing the poor kid, Karl couldn't bring himself to scold him harshly.
"Remember this. No gambling in the future, or I'll be the first to lock you up in the Marine prison to teach you a lesson!"
"Understood! I won't do it again!"
The boy immediately stood at attention and then quickly ran off.
Makino, who had been watching, couldn't help but giggle at the sight.
Karl's lips curled into a smile as he chuckled along.
At that moment, a system prompt suddenly rang in his ears, catching him off guard.
[Detected sign-in candidates: Makino, Dadan, Mountain Bandit Sig. Sign-in available!]
This was possible?
Karl hadn't expected that they could be signed in, but what puzzled him was why Rouge hadn't shown up for sign-in earlier.
Could it be that she was too weak? Or maybe she didn't appear in the original story, so she couldn't be signed in?
Karl didn't know much about the sign-in system, so he wasn't sure how it worked.
But now that the option was available, he wasn't going to hold back.
"Makino, my dear sister, let's have a hug!"
"Eh?!"
"Stop it, you bastard! Put me down! Or I'll scream for help!"
"Help! Dadan, save me! Karl's gone crazy!!!"
Makino trembled as Karl scooped her up, spinning her in the air.
No matter how much she kicked and punched, Karl kept holding on, spinning her around.
Since Karl needed to hold her for ten seconds for the sign-in, he was able to spin a few more times.
When they were kids, Makino used to love playing with the windmill toys and would always insist Karl spin her around.
But now that she had grown up, she was at the rebellious age and just wanted to get away from him.
Moreover, Karl's physical strength had improved vastly, and after spinning a few times, Makino felt a bit dizzy…
The villagers watched the scene without batting an eye. No one intervened in the antics of this brother and sister.
Dadan, however, seemed to enjoy playing matchmaker. After a while, he approached from behind, pretending to be angry, and pulled Karl away.
"Karl, you just got here, and you're already making a move on Makino. Isn't that a bit too fast?"
"Should I clear out a room at my place for the two of you?"
"What are you talking about, Dadan! I'm already grown up! I don't want to sleep with him anymore!"
Makino glared angrily at Karl and quickly ran back to the tavern.
Karl shrugged and put his arm around Dadan's shoulder, laughing.
"Dadan, you're just kidding. Makino may be my sister, but she's grown up now. She needs her own space."
"Tch, you really see her as your sister, huh? That's so stomach-churning."
Dadan's words made Karl grin awkwardly. After counting to ten, he finally let go and asked, "Dadan, do you know where the mountain bandits around here are?"
