Back in his room, Teach lay on his bed, tossing and turning, unable to sleep. The image of the Yami Yami no Mi consumed his mind.
He replayed the conversation between Ace and Thatch earlier, realizing that once they returned to the main ship, Thatch would likely request Whitebeard's permission to eat the fruit.
Given Thatch's status within the crew, Whitebeard would undoubtedly agree.
Even if Teach made the same request, Whitebeard would prioritize Thatch and tell him to wait for another Devil Fruit.
This meant that if Teach wanted to claim the Yami Yami no Mi, he would have to act on his own—and he would have to act before they returned to the main ship.
With this decision made, Teach began planning his next steps: how to take down both Thatch and Ace and escape Whitebeard's inevitable pursuit.
Then, Teach remembered something Ace had mentioned earlier—the reason for their current journey.
The Night Organization had suddenly begun targeting Whitebeard's allied pirate crews.
Knowing Whitebeard's temperament, it was only a matter of time before he gathered the entire crew to confront the Night Organization head-on, asserting the dominance of the Whitebeard Pirates.
This meant that the Night Organization and Whitebeard's crew were enemies.
The Night Organization was notoriously secretive, and their movements were nearly impossible to trace.
If Teach joined them, he could use their obscurity to evade Whitebeard's wrath. It was a perfect opportunity.
As for Thatch and Ace, if they catch him in the act, Teach resolves to kill them both.
Their deaths would serve as proof of loyalty to the Night Organization, a fitting offering to secure his place among them.
Teach, a man of bold action, wasted no time solidifying his plan and waiting for the right moment to execute it.
When Ace and Thatch arrived at Gal Island, they were greeted by utter devastation.
The entire island had been reduced to a desolate wasteland, its towns reduced to rubble, and the ground littered with rotting corpses that emitted a nauseating stench.
Flocks of vultures circled overhead, feasting on the dead.
"Damn it! Those Night bastards!" Ace cursed angrily as he raised a hand and unleashed a blazing ray of fire.
The scorching flames incinerated the vultures midair, their lifeless bodies falling like rain to the ground.
Thatch, his expression cold, said, "The Night Organization isn't just looking for trouble—they're asking to die."
Since Whitebeard had claimed this territory, all the islands and their inhabitants had been under his protection.
For over a decade, nothing remotely as heinous as what had happened on Gal Island had happened. Few even dared to intrude into Whitebeard's waters.
The Night Organization's actions on Gal Island practically declared war against the Whitebeard Pirates.
Even Teach, secretly planning to join them, hadn't expected the Night Organization to go so far.
Killing everyone on the island declared absolute hostility against Whitebeard's crew.
However, this also proved that the Night Organization had the power to challenge the Whitebeard Pirates, strengthening Teach's resolve to steal the Yami Yami no Mi and join them.
Despite searching the island thoroughly, Ace and Thatch found no survivors or clues about the Night Organization's whereabouts.
Reporting the incident to Marco, they prepared to return to the main ship.
As their ship set sail, the eerie silence of the island was broken by the sound of voices.
"I didn't expect things to go so smoothly. The first one we lured in is 'Fire Fist' Ace."
"Let's follow them. We'll find the right time to reveal our plan to Ace. If he agrees, great. If not, we'll kill him."
"Understood. Either way, everything will point back to the Night Organization. Whitebeard will go after them—and Night himself!"
The mention of Night's name carried a sharp, venomous tone, revealing the speaker's deep hatred for him.
That night, as the ship drifted quietly on the sea, the crew was fast asleep. Everyone except Teach, who was wide awake, consumed by his thoughts.
Tonight was his last chance to act. They would return to the main ship tomorrow, and he couldn't afford to move in front of Whitebeard.
The timing had to be perfect. It was now or never.
As dawn approached, the world was at its quietest. This was the time when people were in their deepest slumber.
Teach decided this would be his moment to act. His preference was to steal the Yami Yami no Mi silently.
If he could take it without being noticed, Whitebeard might not even realize who was responsible as long as Teach stayed out of his territory.
But if things didn't go as planned, and he had to take down Thatch and Ace, Teach knew he'd face relentless pursuit from Whitebeard's crew. He hoped it wouldn't come to that.
Over the past two days, Teach had observed that the Yami Yami no Mi was kept in Thatch's room.
Following a carefully planned route, he crept to Thatch's door and slowly pushed it open.
With precise control over his movements, Teach didn't make a sound. Once inside the room, he carefully shut the door behind him.
As he glanced at Thatch, who was fast asleep on the bed, his breathing steady, Teach sighed relief. Everything seemed to be going according to plan.
His eyes turned toward the package on the bedside table. Moving stealthily, Teach opened it.
Inside was the box containing the Yami Yami no Mi. Overjoyed, Teach's heart raced. Yet, out of caution, he opened the box to confirm the fruit's identity.
However, the moment he opened it, Teach's expression changed drastically. The box didn't contain the Yami Yami no Mi—it held a black stone.
Teach immediately felt something was wrong. Instinctively, he turned to look at Thatch on the bed, only to see that Thatch had opened his eyes and was staring at him.
Teach could see shock, disappointment, and disbelief in Thatch's gaze. Rising from the bed, Thatch spoke with a heavy heart.
"Teach, we've lived together for over twenty years. You could've just asked if you wanted the Yami Yami no Mi. Why would you do something like this?"
Teach sensed something unusual in Thatch's tone and asked coldly, "How did you know this Logia-type Devil Fruit was the Yami Yami no Mi?"
"Ace told me," Thatch replied, his voice trembling slightly. "And it was Ace who said you'd try to steal it. At first, I didn't believe him, but now I have no choice."
"Ace?" Teach was dumbfounded. He couldn't figure out how Ace had discovered his intentions. But it no longer mattered.
With a cold sneer, Teach retorted, "Captain Thatch, you claim not to believe it, yet you still moved the Yami Yami no Mi to another place."
Thatch let out a long sigh, offering no response.
At that moment, the door to the room opened. Ace walked in, his expression unfamiliar, his eyes filled with disappointment as he looked at Teach.
"Thatch didn't believe it at first," Ace began, "but I insisted he move the Yami Yami no Mi. I also knew tonight was your last chance to act."
"If you were truly after the fruit, you'd make your move tonight. So, I warned Thatch. I never expected it would be this easy to expose you."
"Ace, Captain!" Teach exclaimed, his mind spinning as the situation spiraled out of control. He hadn't anticipated tonight's events at all.
Now, trapped between Thatch and Ace, his position was far from favorable.
Thatch stepped forward, speaking earnestly. "Teach, if you're willing to admit your mistake, I'll ask Pops to let you have the Yami Yami no Mi."
Teach looked at Thatch's sincere expression, seemingly moved by his words.
Slowly, he dropped to his knees before Thatch, his voice trembling as he asked, "Captain Thatch, are you serious?"
"Of course!" Thatch replied firmly.
