Chapter 280: The Demon Child, Disappearance
Ohara's sudden disappearance shocked the world.
Admiral An personally came to this sea area but found no anomalies, as if the island of Ohara had never existed.
The sea was calm, with no residual power or demonic aura.
About a day after An's arrival, Makima also arrived in person. A closely observed Makima's expression but couldn't draw any definite conclusions.
For the first time, Makima displayed an unusual seriousness. Typically, she appeared calm and collected, as if everything was within her plans, but this time, she seemed genuinely concerned.
Was she acting, or had something truly exceeded her expectations?
What could confuse even one of the four demon lords if it was the latter?
"There's not even a trace of life here, let alone demonic energy," Makima said, crouching on a raft with her hand on the sea surface.
"That's strange. If it's not demons or humans, could a god have erased it?" An asked curiously.
Then, a thought struck her.
A god—how could she forget that gods existed in this world?
Though the nature of these gods was still unknown, Backwater's existence proved that demons weren't the only powerful beings here. Whatever these gods were, they must be mighty.
Could Ohara's disappearance be related to them?
Would Backwater know anything about this?
As An pondered, the world suddenly erupted with wails of agony, as if countless souls were being tortured in hell. The sounds were so horrifying they sent chills down her spine.
These wails and screams overlapped and converged into the phrase "Demon Child."
Demon Child?
An was startled. She instinctively glanced at Makima, and then all the sounds vanished. The sea remained calm, and there was no noise except for the gentle breeze.
Was it an illusion?
Demon Child? Why did she suddenly hear those words? Did that sound come from Ohara? Did a demon child attack Ohara or...?
"Strange..." Makima muttered, frowning slightly. She stood up and said, "Demon Child? But there's no demonic energy here..."
"Could it have disappeared like *** or been pulled into another world by a demon?" A speculated.
Another world... like hell?
Did Ohara fall into hell?
"To reach hell from the human world, one must go through an entrance," Makima said calmly as if reading An's mind. "The entrance to hell disappeared from Alabasta and did not reappear in Ohara."
She paused and added, "The overlapping screams were all human voices. What could the Demon Child mean..."
Just then, An and Makima sensed something and looked towards the sea. A young girl with black hair, no older than ten, covered in blood, had appeared.
The girl was unconscious, eyes closed, but even An and Makima hesitated to approach her.
They could sense that things around the girl were disappearing!
Disappearing!
Many fish in the sea vanished mysteriously, and An's Haki could detect their numbers dwindling, feeling an invisible force surrounding the unconscious girl.
"Disappearing..." Makima murmured. "Could Ohara's disappearance be due to this power?"
An couldn't help but ask, "Demon Child?"
The sudden disappearance of the archaeological sanctuary and its erasure from many people's memories had a terrifying power, and did this power come from the girl?
Calling her the Demon Child seemed fitting; this power was truly demonic!
But what was the sequence of events?
Did the girl's power cause the island's disappearance, or did the island's disappearance bring about the energy surrounding the girl?
Before An could ponder further, Makima's body vanished. An's eyes widened in alarm, realising it was too late to act.
Makima reappeared beside the girl. The power that could make things disappear didn't affect Makima. If even Makima were easily erased, this girl would indeed be invincible.
Makima picked up the unconscious girl and said, "I will take her to Pandora Island. The government will study her."
I regretted not acting first. This girl possessed a powerful ability; if Makima gained it, she would be unstoppable.
But Makima had already succeeded, and any attempt to seize the girl now would likely fail...
Forget it, I thought. She would bide her time and find a way to rescue the girl later.
Makima quickly left, and An's expression darkened, then gradually calmed.
She decided not to return to Marine Headquarters immediately. She wanted to see if she could find more clues, just like the sudden appearance of this girl. Maybe something else would surface.
What had happened on the concealed island of Ohara?
Rewind to a day earlier, when Saul had just defeated the CP agents, and Robin finally reunited with her mother.
Though Ohara had entered an unknown state, it had narrowly avoided destruction. People were still anxious, but the immediate threat had passed.
Ohara's sudden concealment was a nightmare for most on the island.
But it was a rare respite for the scholars, aware of the island's fate.
They didn't understand what had happened but felt safer in this current state.
Even Olvia, who had steeled herself for death, felt slightly relieved.
Ohara seemed utterly cut off from the outside world. Even CP agents couldn't transmit messages, and Saul's attempts to contact the Navy failed.
In this state, Olvia felt it was safe to reunite with Robin. After years of separation, she had been torn between her mother and scholar roles.
However, their peaceful time didn't last long.
They knew that if they remained cut off, everyone on the island would starve!
The other residents were also scared. Luckily, Saul, a Marine vice-admiral, was there. His presence brought some reassurance.
Robin nestled in Olvia's arms, exhausted from the emotional reunion, and fell asleep.
In her dream, she found herself in a giant hall...
She was seated on an oversized chair and saw a long table with many empty seats.
The world was shrouded in mist, but Robin could tell no one else was there.
Only her...
In this vast, empty world, being alone felt terrifying. Although she had previously found solitude relaxing, this was different.
Now, she was in an unfamiliar place, and despite her intelligence, she was still a child.
On the table before her lay a card.
The card's front depicted a tall woman dressed as a jester, with the word "Disappear" written in different scripts.
Disappear?
What did it mean?
Robin reached out to touch the card, feeling a layered dream envelop her as if she were traversing thousands of layers of space.
After an indeterminate time, she returned to reality.
But her mother was gone...
Robin woke up abruptly and instinctively called out, "Mom!"
But there was nothing around her. Olvia was nowhere to be seen.
Panicking, Robin looked around, remembering she had fallen asleep with her mother and Dr. Clover in the Tree of Knowledge. Now, neither her mother nor the scholars were there!
Robin stood up, shaking off her memories, and quickly ran outside.
"Mom! Doctor!"
Robin shouted as she ran out of the Tree of Knowledge, hoping to see them outside discussing something. She had left to avoid disturbing her sleep, but when she opened the door, she was disappointed.
No one was outside either...
The base of the Tree of Knowledge was empty and silent, just like the giant hall in her dream.
Fear sprouted in Robin's heart as she ran towards the town.
Saul was in the town, reassuring the residents. As a Marine vice-admiral, he should be safe!
Robin clung to this hope, running frantically, hoping her mother and Dr. Clover were there too.
But the closer she got, the more frightened she became. The town was eerily quiet, the streets empty. Before she fell asleep, the world was chaotic, but now it was desolate.
As if everyone had left this dead world while she slept, leaving her alone...
Robin's eyes filled with tears, and she tripped and fell, bloodied from the impact.
Biting her lip, she stood up continued running despite the pain, calling out, "Mom! Doctor! Saul! Where are you?!"
After an eternity of shouting, someone finally responded.
"Ro... Robin?!"
From around a corner came Saul's voice. Robin's heart leapt with joy. Saul was still here!
He must know what happened!
Robin rushed to the corner and was shocked.
Saul's body had vanished from the waist down, leaning against the wall, but without a drop of blood or any wounds, as if erased by a giant eraser!
"Saul...?!"
Robin was terrified but ran to help Saul.
"Robin, everyone on the island disappeared. I watched them vanish one by one..."
Saul said, "I should disappear soon too. From now on, you must walk this path alone. Live well!"
"Saul!"
Robin screamed, reaching out, but the closer she got, the faster Saul disappeared.
At that moment, she remembered the card in her dream with the word "Disappear." Was it connected to this?
Robin stopped and stepped back, noticing Saul's disappearance slowed.
The closer she got, the faster he vanished. The power of disappearance...
Was it coming from her?!
"No!"
Robin broke down...
