Chapter 549 - Placing Egghead in the Territory.
[Chapter Size: 2100 Words.]
Third Person POV
Egghead.
...
...
Luffy was reading the daily newspaper while sitting in a somewhat destroyed place, with a woman near him, both sharing tea together that morning.
The girl had ghosts floating around her body while she held an open parasol, a look of pleasure on her face as she enjoyed what she was eating.
As for Luffy, he couldn't stop smiling, since the news no longer seemed so bad about the World Government. It was now more focused on pirate activity in the New World, something that interested him.
The cover featured the official emergence of Sword, an independent armada that would be defending the seas from criminals with former marines, highlighting Garp, Zephyr, Coby, Smoker, and others.
This surprised everyone when they started defending seamstress towns from pirates looting places, while the navy didn't seem happy about it at all.
The World Government was declaring them a criminal organization and managed to prove that they had a base in Monkey D. Luffy's territory, as well as rumors that the Revolutionary Army was also making its main base there.
At this point, Luffy's territory was a great contradiction for the entire world.
There was also news about the main pirates—Blackbeard acting here and there, the Charlotte family rebuilding their territory and expanding their fleet, and even more news about Luffy's own territory, with pirates trying to contact the Pirates of the Dawn to seek shelter or even attempt to spy on them.
But what really interested Luffy more than anything now were the activities of his own crew—or rather, the fleet of the Pirates of the Dawn, or the former Straw Hats, as many still called them.
Bartolomeo appeared in the newspapers saying he had met Shanks on one of the islands in the Red-Haired's territory. Being quite reckless, he planted a flag with the Straw Hat Jolly Roger, declaring it as Luffy's territory.
Shanks arrived on the island and, obviously, a commotion broke out between the two groups. Bartolomeo was easily captured. The image showed him in the scene, tied up along with all the other members, printed in the newspaper.
In the end, Luffy knew nothing serious had happened besides a beating, which Luffy had to agree—Bartolomeo deserved. But surely Shanks wouldn't kill him. Still, Luffy had to admit the courage Bartolomeo had to do that in the territory of someone as powerful as Shanks.
In the end, it seems Bartolomeo continued his journey. He already had a history of placing Luffy's flag on every island he passed through, declaring territories, even in places under the control of the Cross Guild or even Blackbeard, which was clearly enraging those two emperors.
In any case, Luffy could see a certain commotion outside. Of course he could—he heard his own crew proclaiming something in a rather loud tone, and that could only mean one thing: they had finally arrived in the territory.
"What a racket!" Perona complained beside him, sipping her tea.
She felt like her peaceful moment with Luffy was being interrupted, as he silently kept his eyes on the newspaper. She liked this atmosphere.
'Like this... we look like husband and wife...' she murmured while glancing at him, blushing slightly, but Luffy kept his eyes ahead and stood up at that moment.
"Well, looks like we've finally arrived. I'm going out to talk to the crew," Luffy said at last, while Perona shrugged, though internally she was upset that he was leaving, walking out of the destroyed Vegapunk lab where they had been having tea.
Luffy moved up toward the island, and it didn't take long for him to see the floating islands in the sky, along with the immense elephant on the horizon, indicating that they were finally in the territory.
It would be their short stop in the middle of the journey, since they had to remove Egghead from the middle of the sea due to the danger it posed with the World Government lurking, trying to seize Vegapunk's research. So he would place Egghead here and return to the same spot later, heading to Elbaf.
Bepo was focused at this moment, guiding the island into their own territory. People across the surrounding islands also noticed Egghead approaching, as Luffy had asked Bepo to place it near Wano, still being the center of the entire chain of islands that formed a vast continent with many countries.
After passing by some floating islands, they were inside the territory, knowing that people from various nations were now pointing to the sky, watching the huge and strange island flying above them, heading toward an open area between Wano and the others.
Luffy had already planned this when he decided to organize all the islands of the territory, leaving space for a few key locations.
"It's Daddy! Daddy's back!" Aurora kept shouting in Wano, while the Mini-Hancocks started squealing with hearts in their eyes at the sight of the island flying overhead and landing in the distance—after all, it meant Luffy had returned.
Bepo made sure to land the island carefully, touching the sea with precision. When it finally touched down, the ocean stirred with waves across the water due to its size and weight, despite the mink's caution, as it came to rest on the surface.
"We're taking two days off to deal with a few things in the territory. You're free to do whatever you want." Luffy lifted a Den Den Mushi to deliver his message.
Two days was rather short, with the situation involving Vegapunk, Caesar Clown, and the others needing to be resolved, and also decisions on how Egghead would function—now full of Pacifistas who had been kept away from the battle against the Gorosei.
That was because Luffy knew they were too weak, while Bonney had control over them.
Speaking of Bonney, she had remained with her father these past few days since they began traveling, while Luffy had also committed, along with Vegapunk, to try turning him human again.
Bonney had seen the memories that Kuma himself had stored in Vegapunk's lab. She witnessed many things she couldn't understand and couldn't stop crying the entire time, while her father only showed slight signs of being brought back—though he did display some human reactions, as he cried alongside his daughter when she discovered the truth.
However, now within the territory and with the technology they could develop there, there was a good chance Kuma could be healed.
After Egghead began to settle in, Luffy spoke to the people, saying he would find someone to rebuild the city. After that, he took Vegapunk to meet the other scientists, while constantly turning down date invitations from his wives, since he had more urgent matters to handle.
"What... What is he doing here on the island?"
Back in the former area where all his scientists had used one of the floating islands beside Skypiea as a laboratory—something Luffy had to argue with Vegapunk about, since the old man wanted to see the original Sky Island first—they instead went to see the Wapol-metal factory island.
The one who exclaimed earlier was none other than Caesar Clown upon seeing Vegapunk, with the five satellites behind him and an extra Stussy acting as bodyguard for the big-headed old man.
"He'll be your new coworker," Luffy said seriously, while Reiju's father, Vinsmoke Judge, and the scientist from Shiki's crew glanced at each other.
Vegapunk simply sighed. "It's been a long time, Caesar... How have you been?"
"How have I been, Vegapunk? HOW HAVE I BEEN?" He seemed to burst into rage as he floated closer in his gaseous form, head expanding and face twisted into a ghostly grimace.
Then Caesar continued. "I've developed revolutionary things, Vegapunk! Things you've never imagined! I created an amazing gas weapon that can annihilate a hundred thousand people!"
Just hearing that made Vegapunk frown, while Caesar seemed even more excited, thinking he was finally surpassing his rival.
"I created hundreds of artificial fruits called Smiles! A fantastic project, where I continued what you failed to do — and it worked!"
He started laughing, while Luffy raised an eyebrow, unsure whether he was telling the truth. Caesar was so enthusiastic—but obviously, the Smile project was a massive failure. Too expensive, with very low success rates.
"And also, let me tell you, Vegapunk... You know that artificial fruit you called a failure? I modified it and gave it to the Straw Hat! He gave it to that pink-haired girl, the princess of Dressrosa, and she transforms into a dragon as powerful as Kaido!" he exclaimed.
"I've surpassed you in everything, Vegapunk! Hahahahaha!"
While Vegapunk and the satellites seemed surprised by that, Luffy just stared at him. All of it was a massive lie, and Caesar was clearly getting worse with his delusions—Caesar was an idiot.
After all, he had to sneak in and steal the fruit from the dump. That guy was a shameless liar, just trying to one-up his rival.
"Not only that, Vegapunk, I also created several new weapons..." He was about to continue, but Luffy interrupted.
"Can you stop that?" Luffy said beside him, frowning. He was already finding Caesar's reaction way too exaggerated.
"Wait, I wanted to hear!" Lilith complained, excited about the things Caesar was saying. She was the only one among the satellites who had that reaction.
"Um... Look how the lady is interested in my achievements!"
Suddenly, Caesar began acting gentlemanly, holding Lilith's hand as he passed by Vegapunk, while Lilith smiled excitedly.
Not because Caesar was flirting with her, but because she was genuinely interested in his weapon discoveries. After all, she was Vegapunk — with the violent personality.
"You do know she's also an extension of Vegapunk, right?" Luffy said with crossed arms beside them, while Caesar looked at the girl in front of him as if she had two heads.
"What do you mean, an extension of Vegapunk?" Caesar asked cautiously.
"All those behind me are satellites, extensions of myself that I created to help me. After all, I had some problems with certain assistants in the past." Vegapunk muttered, throwing shade, while Caesar turned back to Lilith, still smiling, unfazed, eager for her to keep talking about destructive inventions.
"Argh!" He suddenly pulled away from her like she was a plague.
"Come on, uncle! Tell me more about your inventions!" Lilith suddenly yanked him back using her haki-imbued hand, and Caesar grimaced.
"Let me go, woman! I'm being grabbed by this strange thing!" The desperation in Caesar's voice was clear.
Seeing that this was going to drag on, Luffy decided to go somewhere else.
"Alright, I'm going to leave you this. It's a summary of all the research we've done since I started my projects. It's so you can get up to speed. And here are the next steps of those same projects, which you can read."
Luffy handed over a stack of papers in front of them, while Shaka stepped up to take them. Vegapunk showed interest and picked up the first sequence of pages, beginning to read. The other satellites also grew curious, each grabbing a part, while Shaka was left with the rest of the pile, unable to move due to its size.
Meanwhile, Lilith was still clinging to Caesar, not letting him escape, all while demanding more details about his discoveries.
"Don't call me old man!" Caesar started growling, while the female Vegapunk kept smiling, pressing him for more.
"Well, I'm going to see my family now. I'll leave the rest to you guys." Luffy said, while Vegapunk and the other scientists nodded, watching the chaos unfold in front of them, slightly dazed.
Luffy went straight to Lulusia in the sky first, since this kingdom was no longer a secret — the whole world already knew about it.
Luffy spoke a few words to the country's representative while passing along information to the entire kingdom. Shortly after, he began his descent, leaving the country nestled between the borders of his territory, but not at the edge. Since its citizens didn't feel entirely safe, he placed it among the other islands, where the kingdom would remain.
Luffy was also certain that Morgans was within his territory. He had already sensed him in Alabasta, speaking with the king. Even Vivi had shown up there to visit her father, carrying Sinbad in her arms.
Morgans started asking about recent events to publish something for Vivi.
Luffy ignored it and moved on to where Hancock was, taking his children along, while the other mothers reunited with them.
It was a sort of vacation. And Luffy, too, went to spend time with his family.
