One Piece: Holy Light Swordmaster

Chapter 42: Chapter 42: A Wild Idea Born of a Joke

The officers and soldiers of G-3 Branch were in a state of bittersweet turmoil.

Wright's fervor for pursuing pirates was beyond ordinary comprehension. As his strength grew, Garp granted him extended patrol times. Even during sustained pursuits, Wright no longer needed to report back to the branch base regularly.

This led to an unusual scenario—Wright chased down pirates with relentless determination, akin to a rabid dog. As long as a pirate crew had undeniable evidence of harming civilians or Marines, Wright would hunt them to the ends of the earth, even beyond the jurisdiction of G-3 Branch.

How did he verify their crimes? Activating his Observation Haki, Wright would simply call out, "Have you harmed civilians or Marines before?" and immediately discern the truth—unless the pirates somehow collectively brainwashed themselves.

Remarkably, thanks to Wright's powerful healing abilities, the Marines under his command maintained an unprecedented record: zero casualties in the past two years. Such an achievement was unheard of.

However, this created new problems. Marines from all corners desperately sought to join Wright's unit, eager to serve under his command. Wright had become the "golden ticket" not only within G-3 Branch but also among low- and mid-ranking personnel of Marine Headquarters. Even HQ officers schemed to transfer to G-3 to serve under him.

In the waters surrounding G-3 Branch, Wright was patrolling alongside Garp's warship.

"This won't do, old man Garp," Wright complained. He had grown accustomed to addressing Garp this way, and the latter no longer minded—it was a testament to how powerful habits could become. "Since G-3 Branch was established, it's probably never been this popular. Even with you, the Marine Hero, stationed here, it was never this crazy!"

"Ahahahaha!" Garp laughed heartily, his signature dog-headed hat firmly in place. "This frenzy is all because of you. Countless people are pulling strings to get into G-3, and that's after I blocked a lot of them!"

Wright sighed helplessly. "What can I do? It's not like I can sit idly by and watch my subordinates get injured or even die when I have the ability to save them."

Garp smirked. "Who knew your blasted Holy Light Fruit would be so ridiculously effective? Healing injuries costs you almost nothing and works so fast. Most importantly, as long as someone's still breathing, you can bring them back from the brink of death. It's unheard of!"

"No known healing-related Devil Fruit even comes close to this. To regular Marines, going into battle with you is like carrying an insurance policy on their lives…" Garp leaned closer, his grin turning mischievous. "I've heard a lot of female officers from HQ are interested in you. Want me to introduce some?"

"Absolutely not!" Wright shoved Garp's face away. "What do you want me to do? Blame me for being too capable?"

"Yes, it is your problem," Garp teased. "If you could spread your Holy Light like a Den Den Mushi signal, none of this would be an issue—"

"That's impossi…ble…" Wright began dismissively but then froze mid-sentence, struck by an idea.

The power of Holy Light was extraordinary. It could be used for offense, defense, healing, and even materialization, such as forging weapons. Wright's sword, Ashes, was a prime example.

Over the years, Ashes had transformed significantly due to the continuous infusion of Holy Light. The blade no longer had a metallic texture but resembled a semi-energy construct with an ethereal appearance. Despite this, it was sharper and more durable than ever, capable of cutting through steel like butter.

This phenomenon was a manifestation of an advanced technique called "Lightforging," where Holy Light, combined with a strong will, could imbue objects with unique properties. Ashes was a personalized Lightforged weapon that grew stronger over time, encompassing Holy Light's three attributes: offense, defense, and healing.

Creating Ashes required immense effort, as it needed to embody all three attributes perfectly. But what if Wright used a smaller medium, infusing it with only a fraction of Holy Light focused solely on healing? Such a device could serve as a life-saving tool in critical moments and would be much easier to produce.

In this era, Marine warships were well-equipped with medical resources, even carrying blood banks for transfusions. If Wright could devise a way to stabilize fatal injuries temporarily—buying time for a medic's treatment or a return to base—he could save countless lives.

For injuries that even medics couldn't handle, Wright could periodically gather the critically wounded and heal them himself.

This solution would not only address Wright's inability to be everywhere at once but also allow other medics to play a greater role. More importantly, it could be distributed across the entire Marine force, enabling widespread use to save severely injured soldiers. Those who survived such near-death experiences would often emerge as stronger, more resolute warriors.

Furthermore, these tools could serve as essential humanitarian supplies, saving civilians victimized by pirates. Unlike Marines, ordinary people lacked the physical resilience to survive serious injuries. A small wound for a Marine could be fatal for a civilian.

The potential was immense—this invention could save countless lives and be regarded as a monumental achievement.

Garp noticed Wright suddenly stopping mid-sentence, his expression contemplative as golden light flickered faintly around him. Concerned, Garp dropped his playful demeanor and asked seriously, "What's wrong, Wright?"

After a moment, Wright snapped out of his trance, the golden aura dissipating. "Old man Garp, I think I've just come up with an idea that could significantly impact not only the Marines but the world at large…"

Garp raised an eyebrow. "Important? Dangerous?"

"No, not dangerous, but it's still in its early stages. I'll need to experiment further. If this works…" Wright's eyes glinted with determination as he looked at Garp, who was now genuinely intrigued. "Not only can it solve the current issues plaguing G-3 Branch, but it could give every Marine an extra life!"

Garp's jaw dropped. "You're serious? Are you actually thinking of creating something like a Den Den Mushi for healing? I was joking!"

Wright nodded solemnly. "It won't be as miraculous as what you're imagining, but your joke sparked this idea. Without it, I might never have thought of this solution."

"I owe you my thanks, old man Garp, on behalf of every Marine, civilian, and ally of justice who will benefit from this invention in the future."

Back at G-3 Branch, Garp fully supported Wright's plan, mobilizing resources to help him test potential materials. The requirements were clear: low cost, high availability, artificial reproducibility, small size, environmental stability, and durability.

Once the ideal medium was identified, Wright would imbue it with healing-focused Holy Light, creating a groundbreaking new strategic resource.

"If my idea succeeds," Wright joked to Garp, "maybe I'll even earn the title of Hero of the Marines, just like you."

"Bam!"

"…Was the punch really necessary?"
